Once you have located the above registry keys, search for startup items and delete entries for items you do not wish to start when Windows boots. Note: The MSCONFIG utility could also be used to make these changes on a temporary basis. 11 8/15/2017
Troubleshooters Windows 10 Troubleshooter Windows 10 has some great build in diagnostics software that can be used to troubleshoot performance issues 1. Search Troubleshooting with Cortana's search box and select it (control panel) 2. To generate the report, type perfmon /report into Cortana's search box and run. 2. The Resource and Performance Monitor will automatically start to gather information about your system. 3. When the Monitor finishes, it will launch an interactive report that can be used to further diagnose any issues. Note: The Warnings section, will provide details on any key issues that require action. 15 8/15/2017
Antivirus Issues after application installs One of the most common points of performance lag that our technicians are engaged on is caused by conflicting antivirus/security software being installed on the same system. We suggest using a single solution but for situations that s not an option, make sure to confirm functionality in Safe Mode. Note: If performance conflicts occur, check with the programs publisher for any known issues or fixes. 16 8/15/2017
System Restore Windows 10 Recovery Problem Your device is not working correctly because of something installed recently Your device is not working well and you are not sure what is causing it You want to reset your device back to a clean Microsoft version of Windows, and Windows starts normally You want to reset your device back to the way Dell shipped it to you, and Windows starts normally You want to reset your device back to the way Dell shipped it to you, but Windows does not start See section Perform a System Restore in Windows 10 Refresh your copy of Windows 10 without losing your data Reset Windows 10 using Push Button Reset Reinstall Windows 10 to the Dell factory image using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) Reinstall Windows 10 to the Dell factory image using recovery media To perform a System Restore, follow these steps: 1. 18 Part 2. Hardware Tips
Optane Intel Optane memory Accelerate applications for fast caching and storage, reduce transaction costs for latencysensitive workloads Optane Memory Module - FAQ: Link Note: System requires a 7th Gen Intel Core processor. Find a list of compatible systems at the link below: Link 19 8/15/2017
Hard Drive Drive upgrades and installation Increase the storage capacity Faster load times o SSD o msata o M.2 o Hybrid Extra redundancy 20 8/15/2017
RAM Memory upgrades and installation Upgrading memory is a cost-effective way to help maximize your system's performance. With more memory, your PC can launch and run applications faster Dell Memory Selector: Link Note: A 32-bit system running Windows can accommodate up to 4 GB of RAM, and a 64-bit system can handle 128 GB 21 8/15/2017
Graphics Cards GPU upgrades and installation Looking to increase your graphical performance, boost productivity with additional monitors, or crank some of those game settings up to high? Upgrading your systems GPU can be a little pricy, but its an easy install and can make a huge difference. 22 8/15/2017
Maintenance Physical checks and cleaning Blocked air vents can cause performance issues since the system may not be receiving proper air flow; this can cause the processor to overheat. To identify if this is the cause of slow performance, follow the steps below: 1. Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust and not allowing heat and air to pass through. 2. If yes, Turn off the computer 3. Remove all power sources: Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery, or unplug the desktop power cord. 4. Use a compressed air can to blow the dust out of the vents. Be sure to hold the can at an upright angle (near 90 degrees) and hold it centimeters (6-8 inches) away from the vent. 23 8/15/2017
Hardware Diags Checking for hardware failures To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Online Diagnostics: Link If you are unable to boot the system to access the Dell Online Diagnostics, use the Dell Pre-boot System Diagnostics: Link Startup Errors Check the System Event Log in the BIOS for Thermal Messages or Fan Failures. If you're not familiar with the error indicated, check the link below, or contact support on Event Log Errors: Link 24 8/15/2017
Hardware Diags epsa Memory Isolation There has been a useful new addition to the enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment (epsa) memory diagnostics. It is called the Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM) Isolation test. DIMM Isolation will allow the epsa diagnostics to isolate a faulty memory module in the system. Note: This means that if you have more than 1 DIMM in your PC, the test will identify the individual slot with the fault memory error, rather than give a general memory error that could be in any of the slots. Although with only 1 DIMM fitted, it should be in Slot 1 as a best practice. 25 8/15/2017
