28 What if the PC doesn t boot up? Don t Panic!
29 Power Supply (PSU) Motherboard Processor (CPU) Memory (RAM) Hard Drive (HDD) 1. Power on sends a signal to the motherboard to begin the start up process. 2. Power On Self Test (POST)* checks all hardware and places it in a ready-to-go state. 3. Operating System (Windows) is copied from HDD to RAM 4. Welcome / logon screen. 5. Desktop screen Startup Sequence * BIOS (basic input-output system)
30 POST Failure Troubleshooting Possible Cause Simple things to try No power Check: power cables, switches (incl. PSU), power strips, display input, etc. Failure to complete POST Static charge buildup (laptops) Dust buildup, Internal short, PSU Unplug power cord. Unplug all USB external hardware except monitor, keyboard & mouse. Plug in power cord and restart. Unplug power cord and remove battery. Press and hold down power button for 30+ seconds. Plug in without battery and restart. Clean inside the computer case.
