1 GLOBE-AIS Overview AIS In GLOBE The AIS module for GLOBE allows you to take the information from the AIS hardware and display it on GLOBE electronic charts. The module allows easy access to the information that AIS equipped ships broadcast and greatly simplifies AIS based messaging as well as vessel static data entry. messaging that are not part of basic AIS hardware. If you were to zoom in far enough, this icon would be replaced by a vessel shape scaled to the chart. AIS targets in GLOBE are shown as activated or sleeping targets. The difference between activated and sleeping targets is that sleeping targets are smaller, have no labels and do not show a vector or predictor line. Both types of targets will show movement and report CPA when necessary. GLOBE-AIS module basics This is the AIS instrument. The instrument has radar-like range rings showing the positions of AIS equipped boats within those ranges. In this example the range is set to 10 nautical miles and shows four ships within five nm and one ship just within 10 nm. The range can be decreased by clicking on the + symbol and increased by clicking on the - symbol. This instrument will also have the word MSG when the AIS unit receives a message and the word ALARM when the AIS reports a problem. Double left click in the AIS instrument to access the AIS information and properties page. Double clicking the lower right corner will bring up the Alarms page. Double clicking the upper right corner will bring up the Messages page.

2 Double clicking in the targets area in the AIS Instrument will bring up the Targets Page. The AIS information and properties page has five tabs: 1) Targets a listing of AIS equipped ships 2) Display sets the target color and the information to be displayed with the target 3) Messages the message center for reading and sending messages 4) Alarms the section to view and acknowledge AIS alarms 5) Static Data allows entry of static ship and voyage data Targets Page and AIS Target Information window The Targets page lists AIS equipped ships. Targets with bold lettering are currently being tracked. Targets grayed out have been lost and are not being picked up by the AIS receiver. Double left clicking on a target in the list will bring up the AIS Target Information window. Single right clicking on the ship icon and clicking on More Target Information will also bring up the AIS Target Information Window. This window provides all information being transmitted by the target vessel over the AIS link. The Targets page also allows you to activate targets by placing a check mark in the Activated column. Targets can be deactivated by removing the check mark. Single right clicking on the target icon and clicking on Activate (or Deactivate) Target will also change the vessel s status. The Target Information Window contains AIS data transmitted from the selected AIS target vessel. Double clicking the vessel name brings up this window. 2

3 Display page The Display page allows the user to define the appearance of the target icon on the GLOBE chart view, as well as the information to be displayed. Base Stations can be made visible or not and given a color. Vessels can be shown with a specific color depending on whether they are underway or stopped. Trails can be displayed for the past 5 or 10 minutes. Labels for activated targets can be selected. Messages page The Messages page allows the user to send messages to or receive messages from other AIS equipped vessels. The Inbox lists messages to your vessel; the Outbox lists messages you have sent. The left box lists messages. Click on the message and the message text will appear in the right box. In the Inbox, unread messages will be bold. In the Outbox unacknowledged messages are grayed out. Messages can be sent by clicking on New and choosing a vessel from the pull down list. Enter text in the area below the pull down list. 3

4 Alarms page The Alarms page allows you to view and acknowledge alarms issued from the AIS hardware. To clear the alarms click on Acknowledge All. Static Data page Ship Static Data Ship Static Data includes information such as Vessel Name, Call Sign, and MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity). Vessel dimensions and antenna offsets are also part of Ship Static Data. These values are set in the Dimensions page of the Own-Ship Properties dialog. Voyage Static Data Voyage Static Data includes information such as Navigation Status, Destination, ETA, Type of Ship/Cargo, Persons on-board, and Draught. NOTE: GLOBE can only send the data to the AIS unit. It cannot verify whether the change is actually accepted. Depending on the security levels set in the AIS unit, the request may simply be ignored. 4

5 Log Browser GLOBE features both a graphic and a text log browser. NOTE: Logs must be turned on. In the File menu select Log Settings. Click in the Record Logs box. Select File from the menu, then click on Logs. Select a date from the calendar or select a file from the Files button. You can also replay a log from this window. Pressing the Log Browser button brings up the Log Browser/Report Generator dialog. Vessel List displayed in the Instrument Panel. All AIS targets that were tracked at some point during the selected date will be listed here. History Overview When either the timerange or the list of selected vessels changes, this display will zoom to the area covering all activity for the selected vessels within the selected time range. When the cursor is over this display, it will change to a magnifying glass. Use the left and right mouse buttons to zoom in and out as with other chart views. Cursor position will be 5

6 Date Buttons Another date can be chosen by clicking the date button and selecting a date from the calendar. The arrow buttons to either side of the date can be used to move forward or backward one day. Selected targets will remain selected when changing dates. Time Range Controls The scroll bar at the bottom of the History Overview can be used to generate reports for a shorter time period. Click and drag the left end of the scroll bar to adjust the start time and the right end of the scroll bar to adjust the end time. Start and end times can also be typed into the controls on either side of the date buttons. When a new date is selected, these controls are reset for the entire 24 hours. Text Report All position reports for the selected targets and within the selected time range will be shown here. File (Menu) This menu contains commands for printing reports. Labels (Menu) This menu contains options for the target labels in the History Overview and on printed reports. The choices are None, Time, Speed, and Both. 6

7 Print Choose to print a Graphic Report, a Text Report, or Both. Scale Select the print scale of the graphic report. The default scale (at the top of the list) is the maximum scale for fitting all of the area covered in the History Overview of the Log Browser onto the selected page size. This list will also contain various scales between half the default scale and 1.25 times the default scale including (at the bottom of the list) the scales of any overlapping charts in this range. For example, if the default scale is 1:100,000, there will be choices between 1:80,000 and 1:200,000. NOTE: Scale is computed for the center of the page. Printed reports may not always line up well with another chart of the same scale if the scale of the other chart was for a different latitude. This problem increases with smaller scales and with larger differences in the latitudes used to compute scales. Setup Click this button to access the Page Setup dialog.
