5 Product overview SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange Server is a host-side component of the IBM N series integrated storage solution for Microsoft Exchange, offering application-aware primary Snapshot copies of Exchange databases. You can use SnapManager with Data ONTAP SnapMirror technology to create mirror copies of backup sets on another volume, and with Data ONTAP SnapVault technology to archive backups efficiently to disk. Together these tools offer a complete Snapshot-based data protection scheme that is as scalable, reliable, and highly available as the underlying storage system. The following illustration shows the components in a SnapManager deployment with clustered Data ONTAP: SnapManager highlights SnapManager features seamless integration with Microsoft products on the Windows host and with IBM N series Snapshot technology on the back end. It offers an easy-to-use, wizard-based administrative interface. v v v Integration with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) ensures that write requests are frozen and write caches flushed before backups are taken. SnapManager provides full support for Windows Volume Manager, Windows Server Failover Clustering, Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO), and Exchange Database Availability Groups. Fast, nondisruptive Snapshot technology using IBM N series SnapDrive for Windows software lets you back up databases in seconds and restore them in minutes without taking Exchange Servers offline. Snapshot copies consume minimal storage space. You can store up to 255 copies per volume. Automated central administration offers hands-off, worry-free data management. You can schedule routine Exchange Server database backups, configure policy-based backup retention, set up point-in-time and up-to-the-minute restore operations and proactively monitor your Exchange Server environment with periodic alerts. PowerShell cmdlets are available for easy scripting of backup and restore operations. In addition to these major features, SnapManager offers the following: v Integrated Single Mailbox Recovery enables you to restore individual mailboxes, messages or attachments, calendar items, deleted items, drafts, or contacts (Single Mailbox Recovery must be installed separately) Copyright IBM Corp

7 New in this release Fixed issues Upgrade notes SnapManager 7.2 for Microsoft Exchange includes support for the following: Database Availability Group (DAG) without an Administrative Access Point (AAP), and Microsoft Exchange Server It is a good practice to review the known issues fixed in a new release before upgrading to it. v SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange Server does not recognize DAG without a Cluster Administrative Access Point (AAP). Upgrade notes describe new requirements and changes in support between the last release of the product and this one, including any deprecated features. Review this information carefully before upgrading to the new release. See the IBM N series interoperability matrix for supported configurations and the product user documentation for complete system requirements. Supported upgrade path You can upgrade to SnapManager 7.2 for Exchange from version and later. Specify SnapMirror and SnapVault destination volumes before scheduling backup set verification After installing or upgrading to this release, you must specify SnapMirror and SnapVault destination volumes in the Database Verification Settings dialog box before you can schedule backup set verification on those volumes. In the Database Verification Settings dialog box, you must click Verification Server > Verification on Destination Volumes, and then choose the destination volumes. FlexClone license no longer required for verification of mirrored or vaulted backup sets in most cases A FlexClone license is no longer required for SnapManager verification of mirrored or vaulted backup sets except when the backup set is replicated to a SnapVault destination on Data ONTAP operating in 7-Mode. 9 Important cautions Important cautions identify issues that could severely degrade product functionality. Review these cautions carefully. Deferred verification and point-in-time restore fail on Snapshot copies transitioned from 7-Mode to clustered Data ONTAP using the 7-Mode Transition Tool You cannot perform deferred verification and point-in-time (PIT) restore operations using Snapshot copies that reside on LUNs that have been transitioned from 7-Mode to clustered Data ONTAP using the 7-Mode Transition Tool. However, you can back up and clone your transitioned Snapshot copies, and then verify and restore from the new Snapshot copies that you create. Limitations associated with this issue include the following: v Mounting Snapshot copies that have been transitioned from Data ONTAP operating in 7-Mode using the 7-Mode Transition Tool for deferred verification will fail. v File-level restoration of 7-Mode Snapshot copies is not possible. Because SnapManager for Exchange limits you to using one database per LUN, file-level restoration is not applicable to SnapManager for Exchange. In addition, the up-to-the-minute (UTM) restore operations will function properly; however, the PIT restore operations will fail. You should review the 7-Mode Transition Tool capabilities and limitations to understand the impact of these limitations on your transitioned LUNs. See the 7-Mode Transition Tool documentation set. Managing transitioned LUNs You must perform the following steps after transition from 7-Mode to clustered Data ONTAP, to access your dedicated and shared LUNs. 1. Add the clustered Data ONTAP Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) IP address and credentials in the Transport Protocol Settings in SnapDrive. 2. Create iscsi sessions from SnapDrive to the SVM iscsi LIFs to identify the LUNs in the clustered Data ONTAP system. 3. Mount the databases residing on the LUNs on the Exchange Server. 4. 11 Known limitations Known limitations identify platforms, devices, or functions that are not supported by this release of the product, or that do not interoperate correctly with it. Review these limitations carefully. Third-party storage is not supported You cannot use SnapManager to back up and restore Exchange databases stored on third-party systems, except for databases on third-party storage arrays in gateway systems. Restoring to an alternate DAG location is not supported You cannot restore an Exchange database to an alternate location in a DAG. Configuring datasets outside member servers of a DAG is not supported You cannot configure datasets outside the member servers of a DAG. Deleting backups outside member servers of a DAG is not supported You cannot delete backups outside the member servers of a DAG. Exchange cmdlets are not supported in the SnapManager shell You cannot run Exchange cmdlets from the default SnapManager shell. You must run the cmdlets from the Exchange Management shell. Some Exchange versions are not supported Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, Exchange 2003, and Exchange 2007 are not supported. Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows Server 2008 IA-64 are not supported Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows Server 2008 IA-64 are not supported. SVM disaster recovery Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) disaster recovery (SVM DR) is supported in clustered Data ONTAP If you use SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange Server to manage volumes or LUNs in an SVM and the SVM is configured for disaster recovery, then SnapManager is not supported in this configuration. 12 Limitations of Frequent recovery point backup (FRP) schedules in an active-active Exchange Windows Microsoft Cluster Server(MSCS) In an active-active cluster configuration, SnapManager does not support having a FRP backup schedule for each Exchange instance, because you can have only one FRP schedule per instance. If one cluster node fails, the FRP backup configured for the main instance of the surviving node will continue to run because you can have only one FRP task per server, called FRPBackup. 13 Known issues Known issues identify problems that might prevent you from using this release of the product successfully. Known issues identified in this release The following issue has been added to the release notes since the last release: v SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange Server fails with a Powershell cmdlet error, when SnapManager tries to obtain the globally unique identifier (GUID) of the database to restore the database to Recovery Storage Group (RSG) or Replicated database (RDB). Known issues identified in previous releases The following issues were reported in previous editions of the release notes: v Launch the SnapManager for Exchange MMC SnapIn by using the LaunchSME.bat file in the SnapManager installation directory. v SnapManager for Exchange integrated with OnCommand Unified Manager will not support LUNs mounted as both a drive-letter and a mountpoint. v SnapManager for Exchange Server incorrectly renames eloginfo xxx recent Snapshot copies. v SnapManager for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.0 when installed on Exchange server 2013 does not include the SnapManager Microsoft Management Console (MMC) SnapIn in the Start menu. v SnapManager for Exchange service crashes on the remote verification server when running four or more deferred concurrent verification operations. v Restoring an archived backup copy from SnapManager for Exchange appears to succeed in reports, but it actually fails. v During SnapManager for Exchange DAG-level backups, the backup operation might hang when running backup after the cluster group fails over.
