2 Introduction Introduction DXi Software supports DXi6900-S disk backup systems and is not compatible with any other DXi models. Rarely, you may need perform a fresh installation of DXi Software on a DXi6900-S system. Note: DXi6900-S systems are not compatible with any DXi Software version lower than Checking for Software Upgrades Software upgrades allow you to update the software running on the DXi system to the latest version. Software upgrades can include new features as well as bug fixes. There is one method for upgrading DXi software: Upload a software upgrade file (Software Upgrade page) You can download a software upgrade file from the Quantum DXi6900 Service and Support Web site ( and then manually upload it to the DXi using the Software Upgrade page. You can use this method if the DXi cannot access the Internet. The software upgrade file download requires your DXi system serial number. For more information on DXi software upgrades and to verify the current system software version, see the Software Upgrades section of your DXi User s Guide. All DXi documentation can be found under the Support menu option at For more information on software upgrades, see the Software Upgrades section of the DXi6900 User's Guide. 4 Performing a Fresh Software Installation You can perform a fresh install of the system software on the DXi using a USB installation drive. To perform a fresh install, refer to the following sections: Step 1: Gathering Installation Requirements on the next page Step 2: Obtaining the License Keys on page 6 Step 3: Checking Data-at-Rest Encryption Status on page 6 Step 4: Running RAID Configuration (Optional) on page 8 Step 5: Creating a DXi6900-S USB Installation Drive on page 11 Step 6: Installing the Base Software on page 12 Step 7: Setting the Serial Numbers on page 13 Step 8: Initializing the RAID Arrays on page 14 Step 9: Installing the Application Software on page 14 Step 10: Copying the Data-at-Rest Recovery File on page 16 Preserving Customer Data By default, performing a fresh install destroys all data on the DXi. If you wish to preserve existing data on the system, perform a software upgrade instead. Alternately, if you need to perform a fresh install but wish to preserve customer data on the DXi, make sure to take the following actions during this procedure: Verify that you are performing a fresh install of the same software version currently installed on the DXi. You cannot preserve customer data if you are fresh installing a newer software version. Do not perform Step 4: Running RAID Configuration. Performing this step will destroy all customer data. During Step 9: Installing the Application Software, make sure to type y (yes) when you are prompted to save old configurations and data. If you type n (no), all customer data will be destroyed. Note: If your DXi is joined to a domain and you will be reinstalling the same base and application build while preserving data, you must unjoin and then rejoin the domain after the reinstallation is complete. Ensure that the date and time information is correct after the reinstallation. Note: If an attached physical tape library is configured for Path to Tape (PTT), the configured devices may not be accessible following the installation.
