Introduction In order to be a successful Personal Trainer your whole business relies on two things; Client Acquisition, and Client Retention. Client acquisition meaning - to get new clients, and retention meaning - to keep your existing clients. This book will mostly cover how to acquire new clients into your business using the most effective methods in the industry today. We will also put more focus on methods for gaining clients online rather than offline. Of course, it goes without saying that growing your personal training business offline is 100% crucial to your success. Here are 8 things you can do offline to gain new clients into your business. 1. Use lead boxes on your gym reception or PT desk. 2. Cross promote with other business. - Doctors, - Chiropractors, - Physiotherapists 3. Run a re-activation campaign with old members/ex-clients. 4. Hand out your business cards with a PT offer on the reverse side. 5. Conduct outreach / wellness events in your local community. 6. Host fitness or nutrition seminars and invite gym members to join. 7. Run a referral campaign with your existing clients. 8. Actively engage with members on the gym floor. - Assist with technique correction
STEP 1 - Identify Your Niche Before we look at how to get more clients into your Personal Training business we need to Identify Your Niche. Your niche simply identifies who you are and what services you offer to a target audience. Your niche can be broken down into a Broad niche, a Micro niche, and a Nano niche. Broad Niche: Micro Niche: Nano Niche: Personal Trainer Personal Trainer who specialises in weight-loss Personal Trainer who specialises in weight-loss for new moms In the online world, you want to stand out from the thousands of other Personal Trainers and Online Coaches so that you can drive traffic to your site and generate leads. How many trainers do you see online offering the exact same generic services, such as Weight loss, Muscle building, Improved flexibility, Blah Blah Blah! These are just the benefits of training, they do not narrow down what you are a specialist at. Think about really homing in on what you specialise in and attach who your services are for. For example Body Transformation specialist for Over 40 s Men Pre-and-Post Natal specialist for Pregnant Women Functional Training specialist for Seniors
The TLC Formula TRAFFIC - LEAD - CONVERSION The ultimate goal is to get a paying client into your online training program, or become an offline client. The TLC formula is where the magic happens - You can use the power of the internet to drive cold traffic and convert it into warm traffic (This works especially well if you do online training). Nobody will ever part their money with a complete stranger they don t know, like, or trust. So its not as simple as just saying you offer X, Y, Z, and then expect people to sign up with you. Sending cold traffic and hoping for a conversion is what a lot of Personal Trainers do, and is the number one reason why they aren t getting clients. In fact, what you need to do is qualify leads from all the traffic you send to your website. This will ensure that the person is somewhat interested in your services, and is more likely to want to learn from you in the future. In the next section you will learn exactly how to turn cold traffic into qualified leads.
Qualifying Leads As we mentioned in the previous section, people need to Know, Like, and Trust you before they will ever buy something from you. This applies to anything, not just for Personal Training. So in order to make sales you MUST qualify your leads. It's all about asking questions and eliciting the right information from the prospect To start getting qualified leads you need to have an MVP (Minimal Viable Product) to entice prospects into your marketing funnel. An MVP is often called a lead magnet, or low barrier entry. In exchange for their name and email you can offer a MVP to your website visitors. Such as Free ebook download, Workout video series, or Top 10 Fat Loss Secrets.
STEP 2 - Build Your Lead Magnet When creating your lead magnet, try not to over complicate it. Keep it brief, to the point, but make sure it has a lot of value. Your lead magnet MUST incorporate the following things to get the best opt-in rates. Needs to have a solution to their problem. It must have a specific time frame. Without a headache that is associated with that topic. For example Discover how to Shred 7 lbs of stubborn fat in 7 Days, without having to Track your Macro s. On the following page you will see a list of lead magnets you can design and use in your lead generation funnel.
Example Lead Magnets Personal Trainer Free Session Voucher 7 Day FREE Pass (Gym Membership) Fat Loss Cheat Sheet Free ebook Download Discover How Report (Choose Your Topic) Join My Private Fat Loss Facebook Page 5 Day Detox Plan 7 Day Fat Loss Jump Start Workout Video Series Audio Podcast Series Weekly Health & Fitness Newsletter Healthy Recipe Book Download
STEP 3 - Create A Funnel Once you have decided on your lead magnet it is time to build your funnel. This is simply a landing page you send your traffic to (Before your website). Here you will display your lead magnet with an opt-in form. For the visitor to get your Free download, they must fill out their details on the opt-in form. The funnel will then collect those details and add the lead to your email autoresponder list (We will touch on this in a later section). Your lead will then be taken to a Thank-you page, or a URL redirect if you wish. How The Funnel Works Step 1 - Visitor opts-in Step 2 - Visitor is taken to a thank you
How The Funnel Works Step 3 - Visitor is directed to lead magnet Step 4 - Email autoresponder begins
Email Marketing So your website visitor has opted-in to your funnel, and you now have their submitted information. Does this mean they are now ready to buy from you? - NO! All you have simply done at this stage is filter out any warm leads from the cold traffic landing on your website. The next step is to build a relationship with this lead through email marketing. Have you ever heard The money is in the list List being your email list. Well, to some extent this is true, however I believe the money is actually in the relationship you have with your list. Before we go into the email marketing strategy for building a relationship with your audience let me just mention why email marketing is so important. Email marketing has a ROI (Return On Investment) of 4300%. Sending emails is a less intrusive advertising method. You MUST get your leads into YOUR ecosystem (Which means off Facebook and Instagram and into your email list).
Email Autoresponder Okay, so when it comes to setting up your email marketing, you need to make this process as automated as possible. This is where an email autoresponder comes in. This is a platform where you design your prewritten emails, and once somebody opts-in to your funnel, it will automatically trigger the email campaign you have setup to run. One of the easiest email autoresponders to use is ConvertKit. Click the link below to check it out. ConvertKit Click here to start your 14 Day Free Trial
STEP 4 - Setup Your Email Series As I have mentioned earlier, it is essential to warm your audience with value so that in the future they will know, like, and trust to buy from you. The 7-11 Theory Research has proven that, on average people are more likely to purchase through email marketing after 7 to 11 emails. So this is where you need to give your audience easy-to-read content that offers some value to why they opted-in to your form in the first place. It is advised to drop in a offer (Up-sell your product), after every 3x value emails you send to your audience. For example this is how you should set up your email sequence Value Value Value Offer Value Value Value Offer
STEP 5 - Drive Traffic The biggest reason Personal Trainers fail to generate is simply the lack of traffic, but more importantly, lack of quality traffic. Driving traffic to your funnel can be done in many ways, from organic methods to paid advertising. Facebook Paid Ads The quickest and possibly most useful way to drive traffic is through paid Facebook ads. Spending just $5 per day can get you a substantial number of leads into your funnel. What is great about Facebook is the ability to do detailed targeting with your audience (This is where the magic happens). Targeting facebook users, in your specific area, who have shown an interest into health & fitness, can really narrow down your target audience. Google Adwords You can use Google Adwords to target people who use google search for specific keywords (Such as Personal Trainers in London). For this just make sure you do your keyword research as there is a huge amount of competition with google advertising. Check out the Google Keyword Planner to make sure your adverts are hitting the best possible search terms. Instagram Probably the most effective way to draw attention to your Personal Training business to potential clients is Instagram. Get active, post your success stories, use hashtags, and engage with your audience.
Leveraging Social Media Personal Trainers can leverage various social media platforms to build their brand awareness and generate a ton of leads. If done correctly, you don t need to use paid advertising (as mentioned in the previous section). There are so many options and platforms to utilise with social media. Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Linked. In, etc. If you are not on any of these platforms you are definitely missing out. If you want to build your online training business this is a great opportunity to show a huge audience, who follow your pages, why you re a great coach. Unfortunately a lot of Personal Trainers don t quite get it right with social media. Here s a few things to think about when it comes to social media. Create motivational content (workout videos/quotes). Engage with your audience (Comments/Likes/Shares). Have a bio link to your website/landing page. Research your hashtags. Post your client s working out with brief descriptions of the workouts. Post content with a call-to-action attached. Don t focus on building your followers, if you do these steps correctly, you followers will come to you.
In Summary In order to generate more leads into your Personal Training business you must put some effort into your online strategy. Follow this 5 step plan to capture your leads and build a relationship with your audience. Step 1 - Identify Your Niche Step 2 - Build A Lead Magnet Step 3 - Design a Marketing Funnel (To Capture Leads) Step 4 - Create an Email Series (Using an Email Autoresponder).
