Reference: YE001 Overview New tape drives and options for Power Systems You can now choose from three internal tape drives to place in the half-high tape slot in your Power 520 or Power 550 server's system unit. The newest of these drives is the #5619 80/160 GB DAT160 tape drive. It joins the lower-capacity #5907 36/72 GB DAT72 tape drive and the higher-capacity #5746 800 GB LTO-4 tape drive to deliver a range of options to suit your needs. You can use the #5912 PCI-X adapter to attach tape drives or disk drives. These enhancements are supported by the i, AIX, and Linux operating systems. Other enhancements: The Power 520 1-core Growth Edition and Power 520 2-core 150 User Edition offer additional benefits. The configuration flexibility of Power Systems running the i operating system makes the previously mandatory WAN adapter an optional feature on POWER6 servers. Support for 141 GB SCSI disk drives is added to the POWER5+ 9407-515 and to the 9406 models 800, 810, 825, 870, and 890. is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1

Key prerequisites i 5.4, or later, AIX, or Linux operating system Planned availability dates August 26, 2008, except for the following: July 22, 2008 Power 520 edition enhancements Optional WAN adapter August 1, 2008, expanded 141 GB disk support: #1268 - #4328 - September 2008 - Fibre channel adapter support Description enhancements The Power 520 (9407-M15, 9408-M25) and Power 550 (9409-M50) now offer you the choice of three tape drives that can be placed in the half-high tape slot in the system unit. The newest tape drive is the #5619 80/160 GB DAT160 tape drive. It joins the lower-capacity #5907 36/72 GB DAT72 tape drive and the higher-capacity #5746 800 GB LTO-4 tape drive to provide a wider range of options. The #5746 LTO-4 tape drive was added in May 2008 without a formal announcement letter. The #5619 80/160 GB tape drive can use two different types of tape cartridges. It can use the 36/72 GB 4 mm DAT cartridge or the new 80/160 GB DAT cartridge. The 4 mm cartridge is identical to the cartridges used with the #5907 tape drive. The new 80/160 GB DAT cartridge offers 80 GB of capacity uncompressed or 160 GB of compression with typical 2x compression. The tape drive senses which tape cartridge is being loaded and handles the media accordingly. The #5912 PCI-X DDR dual-connector x4 adapter enables attachment to tape drives and disk drives. As an tape controller, the #5912 supports the attachment of external 36/72 GB DAT72, 80/160GB DAT160, and 800/1600GB LTO-4 tape drives. These tape drives are in the following tape units: 7214-1U2, TS2240, TS2340, TS3100, TS3200, and TS3310. Other removable media devices supported include DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drives. adapter-to-enclosure (AE) cables are used to attach removable media drives. The #5912 has no write cache, but each #5912 can support the attachment of up to 48 disk drives if carefully sized and properly cabled using #5886 EXP 12S Disk Drawers. Previously a maximum of one #5886 EXP 12S Disk Drawer was offered on the 9408-M25 or 9409-M50; but by using the #5912 adapter, additional disk drawers can be attached to the 9408-M25 and 9409-M50. The #5912 adapter and feature #5886 were announced earlier for use with the AIX operating system on the 9117-MMA and 9119-FHA, and now they can also be used by the i operating system. So, i can now support many more disk drawers on Power Systems, assuming that your disk performance requirements can be met with the zero write cache #5912 adapter. Mirroring support for #5912 controlled disk drives is offered. For i, mirroring support is integrated in the operating system. For AIX or Linux, RAID-10 support is provided by the #5912. RAID-5 and RAID-6 support is not supported for the #5912. The built-in capabilities of the #5912 enable path redundancy from the disk controller to the disk drives. With proper cabling, if one connection is lost to the disk drives, another path remains available via the redundant expanders in the disk drawer. This path redundancy is available for i, AIX, and Linux operating systems. AIX and Linux offer the additional redundancy option of dual-controller configurations. In this dual-controller configuration and with proper is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2

cabling, if one #5912 adapter is lost, another can take over and continue to access the disk drives. The #5912 adapter is available for the 1-core Power 520 (9407-M15), 2-core Power 520 (9408-M25), and Power 550 (9409-M50) for both i and AIX environments. The 1-core Power 520 does not support attachment of an EXP 12S Disk Drawer. The Power 570 (9117-MMA) and Power 595 (9119-FHA) previously announced the #5912 adapter for AIX and Linux. Support for i is now available. The #5912 adapter is not available for the 9406-MMA. You should first convert your system to a 9117-MMA before ordering the #5912. This 9406-MMA to 9117-MMA conversion is offered at no additional charge and maintains the same serial number. For additional information on cabling, refer to the "Planning for Cabling" chapter in the Site and Hardware Planning Guide, SA76-0091, at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/hw/topic/iphdx/sa76-0091.pdf Power 520 edition enhancements The 9407-M15 1-way Growth Express Edition (#6725) is enhanced with five additional i no-charge user entitlements. To obtain the larger number of no-charge users, the minimum configuration now required must include 4 GB of memory, 4 disk drives, and a 175 MB Write Cache (#5679). This discount is available for qualified orders shipped after July 22, 2008, that have the correct number of no-charge features included on the order. Previously, there was no difference in the minimum configuration for either the Entry or Growth Edition, and there had been no difference in the number of no-charge i user entitlements. There is no change to the 1-way Entry Express Edition (#6721). The 9408-M25 1/2-way 150 User Express Edition (#6762) is enhanced with 10 i no-charge user entitlements. Previously, the 150-user editions included zero user entitlements at no additional charge and required a minimum of 30 user entitlements (chargeable). Now, the 150- user edition requires a minimum of 150 user entitlements (140 chargeable + 10 no-charge). This discount is available for qualified orders shipped after July 22, 2008, that have the correct number of no-charge features included on the order. There is no change to the 1/2-way 30 User Express Edition (#6761) or the 1/2-way Unlimited User Express Edition (#6763). Electronic Customer Support for WAN adapters POWER6 systems no longer require a mandatory WAN adapter; however, it remains highly recommended, especially for configurations that do not have a Hardware Management Console (HMC). A WAN adapter has been required on System i systems for many years, offering a known connection into Electronic Customer Support and into a heavy-duty, remote-support diagnostic tool often called Piranha. Enhancements to ECS now allow connections over LAN adapters and are usually made through the HMC's communication adapter if an HMC is present. Similarly, Piranha can be used via an HMC connection. Given these enhancements, the WAN adapter is no longer included in the minimum configuration definition. If an HMC is not on the POWER6 configuration, a WAN adapter must be included to allow the use of Piranha. Piranha can enable developers to dial into a system to help diagnose difficult problems, assuming you allow access permission. You should ensure you have a method to connect electronically to to receive the best possible support. Expanded 141 GB SCSI disk support The POWER5+ 9407-515 and the earlier-generation 9406 Models 800, 810, 825, 870, and 890 will now support 141 GB disk drives. The 9407-515 has eight disk slots (two sets of four disk slots) and previously supported only 70 GB disk drives. You can now mix 141 GB and 70 GB disk drives on the same 9407-515 system; normal configuration considerations such as minimum RAID size set and mirroring of the same size disk drives apply. The 141 GB disk drives are not supported in the Model 800/810/825/870/890 system units, but are supported in attached I/O towers/drawers such as the #5094, #5294, #0595, #5095, and #5786. previously announced plans to withdraw sales of new 70 GB and 282 GB disk drives starting in February 2009 while continuing to support 141 GB drives. This expanded support of the 141 GB drives gives you added flexibility. Updated features for rack-mount or deskside configurations is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3

New 9407-M15, 9408-M25, and 9409-M50 systems will use different feature codes to indicate rack-mount and deskside configurations. This offers a more consistent Power 520 and Power 550 ordering structure to manufacturing. Because the same parts are shipped and there is no difference in price, you do not need to change existing systems already shipped or on order. The 9407/9408 changes from #7521+#7267 (rack-mount) to #7200+#7114 (rack-mount) and from #7250+#7224 (deskside) to #7112 (deskside). The 9409 changes from #7229+#7268 (rackmount) to #7360+#7146 (rack-mount) and from #7226+#7227 (deskside) to #7292 (deskside). Fibre channel adapter support Early in 2008, announced two smart Fibre Channel adapters running under the i 6.1 operating system on POWER6 systems. Initially, these adapters supported the 3592, 3584 (TS3500), and 3494 tape offerings. (Refer to Hardware Announcement 108-073, dated January 29, 2008.) Beginning at the end of September 2008, tape offering 3573 (TS3100 and TS3200) with LTO 3 or LTO 4 drives, with i 6.1 and applicable PTFs* on POWER6 systems will be supported: As indicated in January 2008, additional tape drives are planned to be supported in fourth quarter 2008 including the 3576 (TS3310), 3577 (TS3400), and 3580 (TS2340/TS2240). *Informational APAR II14355 will contain prerequisite PTF level information as available. Accessibility by people with disabilities A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at http://www-3.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Power Systems models are capable, when used in accordance with 's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Product positioning Three internal tape drives now offer a range of capacity, performance, and price. The external tape options feature additional options for sharing tape drives, automation, and hardware encryption. The #5912 adapter for disk drives delivers a cost-effective attachment, but where higher performance is a consideration, you should consider either SANs or disk controllers with write cache.
