Hardware Announcement October 2, 2001 IBM 7212 Model 102 TotalStorage Storage Device Enclosure Overview The design of the 7212 Model 102 provides efficient and convenient storage expansion capabilities for select IBM pseries and RS/6000 servers. The 7212 Model 102 is designed to mount in one EIA Unit of a standard 19-inch rack using an optional rack-mount hardware feature kit. The 7212 Model 102 can also be configured for desktop mounting. The 7212 Model 102 has two bays that can accommodate any two of the following storage drive features: Digital Data Storage (DDS-4) tape drive This 4mm DDS-4 tape drive, with 20 GB native data capacity per tape cartridge and a native data transfer rate of 3 MB per second, uses 2:1 compression so that a single tape cartridge can store 40 GB of data. The DDS-4 drive is read and write compatible with DDS-4, DDS-3, and DDS-2 formats. The DDS-4 drive also utilizes a unique media recognition feature engineered to optimize product reliability. 40X CD-ROM drive The 40X CD-ROM drive provides easy access to data stored on CDs. The access time of the 40X CD-ROM is 100 ms for quick and efficient performance. The CD drive supports both synchronous and asynchronous modes, accommodates both 12-cm and 8-cm disks, and can read CD-ROM disks created in either single- or multi-session mode. DVD-RAM drive The native data transfer rate, in DVD mode, is 2.7 MB per second. Using 3:1 compression, a single disk can store 28 GB of data. Supported DVD disk native capacities on a single DVD-RAM disk are as follows: 2.6 GB, 4.7 GB, 5.2 GB, and 9.4 GB. The DVD drive supports both synchronous and asynchronous data transfer, accommodates both 12-cm and 8-cm disks, and can read CD-recordable, CD-ROM, and CD-RW disks. Rack-Mount Hardware Kit This kit provides the mounting hardware necessary for installing the 7212 in one EIA Unit of a standard 19-inch EIA rack. The kit utilizes ball-bearing slide rails providing ease of use and quick access to the 7212. Product Preview The following features are under consideration as future enhancements to the 7212 product family: LTO Ultrium Tape Drive SDLT Tape Drive DDS-4 Tape Autoloader Mammoth-2 Tape Drive SLR100 Tape Drive -48 V DC Power Supply Previews provide insight into current IBM plans and directions. Specific availability dates, ordering information, and terms and conditions will be provided when the product is announced. Key Prerequisites pseries and RS/6000 server support is limited to servers that support SCSI adapters feature numbers 6205, 6203, or 6206, and AIX 4.3.3 with update CD LCD4-0995-14, or AIX 5.1 with update CD LCD4-1103-01.
