Chapter 9: Updating Firmware for the Passport 360 For many Federal APD devices, including the Passport 360, firmware is stored in a Flash memory device on the controller board, allowing you to load or update firmware via a serial or Ethernet connection from a computer with the Federal APD firmware update program. This chapter contains the following information: Before You Start...91 Updating Firmware Using a Serial Connection... 91 Updating Firmware Using an Ethernet Connection... 98 Before You Start You may update device firmware via a serial connection at the device or via an Ethernet connection at the device. Updating with an Ethernet connection is usually much quicker. For a serial connection, to load firmware to the Passport 360, you must have the following: Laptop or desktop computer with a serial port RS232 serial cable FlashProgrammer program installed on the computer, available from the Federal APD web site (instructions included in this chapter) Firmware file, available from the Federal APD web site For a Ethernet connection, to load firmware to the Passport 360, you must have the following: Laptop or desktop computer with an Ethernet port Ethernet crossover patch cable FlashProgrammerE program installed on the computer, available from the Federal APD web site or authorized Federal APD technician (instructions in this chapter) Firmware flash file, available from the Federal APD web site or authorized Federal APD technician Updating Firmware Using a Serial Connection Installing the FlashProgrammer Program The FlashProgrammer program allows you to upgrade firmware on the Passport 360 (and other Federal APD devices). You must install this program on the computer you will be using to load the firmware to the Passport 360. Connecting the Computer to the Passport 360 Connect the computer with the FlashProgrammer program to the Passport 360 using an RS-232 serial cable. The cable connects to a communications port on the computer and to the J2 CPU DEBUG port on the Passport 360. Make sure the connection cable has the following pin-out: Figure 9.1 RS-232 Cable Pin-Out PC COM port DB9 Female Reader J2 CPU DEBUG DB9 Female 1 3 5 7 9 2 4 6 8 1 3 5 7 9 2 4 6 8 Loading Firmware to the Passport 360 After you have installed the FlashProgrammer program and connected the computer to the Passport 360, follow these steps to load the firmware: 1. Copy the firmware installation files from the Federal APD web site to the hard drive on the computer you are using to load the firmware. 94 Ch. 9 Updating Firmware for the Passport 360 ZMA-575, Ver. 4 Passport 360 Card Reader

Click the warning window to close it, and then a window similar to the following will display: IMPORTANT!If you are updating your Passport 360 firmware from a version earlier than Version 1.1.5.7, you must complete steps 5-9 twice in order to load two files, both the application software and the boot software: 1) application.flash (version 1.1.5.7) 2) boot.flash (version 1.2.5.3). You must load the files in this order. Note that loading the boot file is not required for most firmware version updates of Federal APD devices, but it will be continued to be required if you are updating from any Passport 360 version prior to 1.1.5.7. Updating Firmware Using an Ethernet Connection Although the option to update the Passport 360 over a network is not currently available, you can connect a Passport 360 to a computer using an Ethernet connection between the two. Installing the FlashProgrammerE Program The FlashProgrammerE program allows you to update firmware for Federal APD devices with an Ethernet connection. You must install this program on the computer you will be using to load the firmware to the Passport 360. If you do not already have this program installed, install it as follows: 1. Obtain the FlashProgrammerE program from the Federal APD web site, your distributor, or your Federal APD support technician. 2. Copy the FlashProgrammerE.exe file to the computer. Connecting the Passport 360 Connect the Passport 360 to the desktop or laptop computer using an Ethernet crossover patch cable connected to the J14 Ethernet 10-Base-T (RJ-45) connection on the Passport 360. Loading Firmware to the Passport 360 After you have installed the FlashProgrammerE program and the Passport 360 is connected to the computer, follow these steps to load the Passport 360 firmware: 1. Copy the firmware flash file to the hard drive on the computer you are using to load the firmware. 2. Start the FlashProgrammerE program by opening the FlashProgrammer.exe file. 98 Ch. 9 Updating Firmware for the Passport 360 ZMA-575, Ver. 4 Passport 360 Card Reader

3. Click the Single option. Note: The Multiple option is currently not available for the Passport 360. 4. Enter the device s IP address as 192.168.0.1 in the Single box. To enter the 1 after the last decimal, either type a period or click the mouse to move there. Note: You must use this device address for all Passport 360 Card Readers! The computer must be configured to see the device at this address. For assistance with this configuration, see your network administrator. 5. Click the Select button. 6. Browse to and select the firmware flash file you want to update the device(s) with. The file name displays in the File box. 7. Click the Program button to start the firmware update. If data becomes corrupted before the download takes place, the system aborts the download and displays the message Device x.x.x.x download CRC failed. Update FAILED! where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the device. If this happens, attempt the download again. If you have selected a firmware flash file that is invalid for the device, for example: the TD- 300 firmware file is selected for download to a Passport 360, a message displays prompting you to cancel the update. If you selected the wrong firmware flash file, cancel the update and select the correct file. When the download is in progress, the word Idle changes to Downloading. Also, the Current Device box displays the IP address of the device currently being updated, and the message box at the bottom of the window displays the status of the update.
