Pay-Per-Click Advertising Special Report Excerpted from 2005 by Kenneth A. McArthur All Rights Reserved. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising Special Report Pay-Per-Click ads are text advertisements which are displayed on search engine result pages and content sites. The list of providers includes: Google AdWords, Overture, ah-ha.com, FindWhat, Sprinks, espotting, and Looksmart. When you buy Pay-Per-Click advertising, you bid for ad position. Because ads near the top generate more clicks, those ads more valuable. Ads can run anywhere from $.10 to $50.00 depending on the competition for a particular search term. You choose the amount that you are willing to pay for each click. When other advertisers select the same keyword or phrases; the person who bids the most shows up first in the results. Don t worry, if you aren t satisfied with your position, you can always change your bid price to get a higher position. Pay-Per-Click ads are usually placed in an area separate from the free listings. You know what they look like if you think about it or do a quick search on a search engine and you will see them. Usually the Pay-Per-Click ads are displayed along the right-hand side of the results or under a heading like, Sponsored Links. When someone clicks on your ad, you pay the price that you bid. In some cases the provider will lower that bid price for you automatically to one cent above the next highest bid. There are a number of advantages to Pay-Per-Click advertising. 1. Results are almost immediate 2. Accurate testing and measurement of changes in copy and offers is easy and fast 3. You can have lots of ads all with wide distribution 4. You get Zero Cost Branding when an ad is displayed without someone clicking. The Big Two The top two pay-per-click systems are Google and Overture. You will typically get much more traffic from these two systems than all of the others combined. On the other hand, smaller search engines may charge less for particular keywords and keyword phrases. Both Overture and Google have the advantage that the top ranked ads from their systems can also appear in other search engines results through various partners. Google Adwords In June of 2000 Google introduced AdWords, a self-service ad program that could be activated online with a credit card in a matter of minutes. Google partner sites include: America Online, Inc., Ask Jeeves,AT&T Worldnet, CompuServe, EarthLink, Inc., Netscape, and Sympatico Inc. The new program made it simple for a small business person to get started with just four easy steps:

Step 1: Select target languages and locations for your ads There are more than a dozen languages and hundreds of countries to select from. If your business targets only a particular city or state, you can even choose specific locations. Step 2: Create an Ad Group This is where you design your ads and choose targeted keywords. You can also specify the maximum amount you are willing to pay when users click on your ads. Step 3: Set your daily budget You can control the amount you want to spend on your campaign each day. Once your daily limit has been reached; your ads will not display for the rest of the day. There is no minimum budget for Google Adwords. Step 4: Fill in your account information You need to sign-up for an AdWords account, verify the e-mail address, enter your billing information and make your initial deposit of funds. Once your account is activated, your ads will begin displaying. Your daily budget determines how often your ad is shown for your keywords. If you are reaching this budget limit each day, but want more visitors, just increase your budget amount. How to Improve Your Ad s Position The ad position is determined by maximum cost-per-click, your ad s actual clickthrough rate, and the ad text. If you increase your maximum cost-per-click (CPC) or your ad s clickthrough rate (CTR) your ad s position will improve. Also, ads with higher CTRs are more likely to draw relevant clicks and qualified leads. Google s system favors ads with higher clickthrough rates (CTRs), and shows them more often than ads with lower CTRs in the same Ad Group. You want to make sure that you are targeting the audience most likely to purchase your products or services, so it is crucial that you select keywords and phrases that are relevant. Concentrate on creating compelling ads that link to relevant content and you will get much better results. The more general the keywords, the more impressions you will get, but more impressions may not mean more clicks. General keywords will generate the most impressions, but will often result in the fewest number of clicks. For example, for AffiliateShowcase you wouldn t want to choose a keyword phrase like Internet marketing because your ads could appear to people searching for subjects such as internet access unrelated to your business. Instead, you should select more targeted phrases like top affiliate programs so your ads will be displayed to people looking for the content that is on your site. Use the Overture search term suggestion tool to get ideas for other terms.

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ A quick search using top affiliate programs came up with the following searches done in January 2005: Count Search Term 124,384 affiliate program 7,947 free affiliate program 7,169 best affiliate program 4,676 casino affiliate program 4,166 affiliate marketing program 4,104 top affiliate program 3,757 affiliate program directory 3,691 pay per click affiliate program 3,647 web site affiliate program 3,490 online affiliate program 3,270 affiliate program software 2,918 internet affiliate program 2,715 internet marketing affiliate program 2,639 web master affiliate program 2,355 make money with affiliate program 2,268 web affiliate program 2,073 adult affiliate program 2,013 new affiliate program 1,913 business opportunity affiliate program 1,839 affiliate program uk 1,826 free online affiliate program 1,764 affiliate program tracking 1,742 best free online affiliate program 1,702 canadian affiliate program And many more! Obviously some of these terms are better matched to AffiliateShowcase than others. The keyword phrase affiliate program has the most requests and will probably result in the most clicks since it is right on target for AffiliateShowcase. Your ad will display when users search on the keywords affiliate and program, in any order, and even if the query includes other terms, such as top affiliate programs. With broad matching, you ll also automatically get expanded matching, which means that Google will analyze your keyword list, ad text, and millions of daily Google search queries, then show your ads for other relevant terms and variations (such as associate programs) even if you didn t include these terms in your keyword list. If you place quote marks around your phrase - affiliate program - your ad will match searches with both keywords in this particular order, and possibly with other search terms in the query. For example, your ad will show for top affiliate program but not for programs for affiliates and not for variations. There aren t any adult affiliate programs at AffiliateShowcase. Luckily, you can use negative keywords to block out people who are searching for particular terms. You can specify a negative keyword by placing a dash before your

keyword. For instance: -adult -free -porn One of the best ways to get exactly what you want is to use the Exact match. All you have to do is Include brackets around your keyword: [affiliate program] In this case, your ad shows when users search for affiliate program, in this order, and without any other terms in the query. For example, your ad won t show if someone searches for top affiliate program. Make sure to target particular languages and countries. AffiliateShowcase is centered on English speaking countries. Google lets you have separate display and destination URLs in your ad. For affiliates this is really great because it lets you to use your affiliate links in your ads. Your affiliate referral link is not the link that is displayed, but when someone clicks on your ad, they are sent to your referral link and you can earn commissions if they purchase something. This is a big advantage over Overture for beginning affiliates because it doesn t require a web site. Other key tips: Include keywords in your ad text or title Use short, non-repetitive sentences Double-check spelling and grammar Test multiple ads per Ad Group Stress benefits over features in your ads Use a call-to-action Have relevant and informative landing pages Make your landing page easy to understand Track conversion rates Use questions in your title Adjust bids frequently Avoid single-word keywords Use specific keywords, rather than general ones Overture Overture became the first major pay-per-click search engine, When it incorporated the University of Colorado World Wide Web Worm into it s system. Established in 1997 as Goto.com, the company changed its name to Overture and displays its listings at Alta Vista, HotBot, Infospace, iwon, Lycos, MSN, Yahoo, various meta crawlers and other search engines. They offer two ways to get started: Fast Track Self Serve Plan The Fast Track Plan gives you a consultant to help choose and set-up your program. It's more expensive, but easy to get started. The program also gives you a turn-around time of about three days.

With the Self Serve Plan there is no service fee. You pick your keywords and prices yourself. On the Self Serve Plan the turn around time is a little slower about five days. Overture also requires a non-refundable deposit and a minimum monthly budget.
