PRESS RELEASE Berlin, 10 th January 2017 GALERIE 36 NEW PLACE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY IN BERLIN Artist collective HEAVEN and solo exhibition of Marc Riboud will present two exhibitions at Chausseestraße 36 in Berlin-Mitte in Autumn/Winter 2016: From 9 th September 2016 until 31 st March 2017 the artist collective HEAVEN will present their work. The French MAGNUM-photographer Marc Riboud will be shown from 7 th October until 17 th December with his exhibition World.Politics.Life. Both shows make their premiere in Berlin. Among the restoration and opulence, between Gründerzeit and modernism what emerges at Chausseestraße 36 is a unique location devoted to historical and contemporary photography. Since 2012 this former officers house has been carefully renovated to preserve its rich historical substance using sustainable, and whenever possible, original materials. The reconstruction and expansion of the building follows an architectural approach to design, furnishing the space spanning 5 stories, in various historical styles from 1900 until today. The gallery s exhibition space stretches across 400m 2 of the building. The space is characterized by the concept of the salon which breaks decidedly with the idea of the gallery as a neutral white cube. Besides exhibitions of national and international photographers as well as the advancement and promotion of young talent, is an open space for cooperation with private collectors, museums and other institutions. Currently home to a library, publishing house, art collection and analogue photo lab following completion in 2017, the house will host further cultural activities. is under the artistic direction of Mona Mathé. HEAVEN A visual journey through distant countries, to unspoiled countries and new encounters HEAVEN is a return to nature as well as a look inwards. Atmospheric visual spaces reveal expanded regions, human life and dream-like figures. Behind HEAVEN stands an artist collective and an artistic publication in print since 2001, which does not attempt to explain the medium of photography. Photography is seen as a language on its own that needs no further description. And in the way that the medium speaks for itself, its direct relevance and particular poesy is revealed. HEAVEN brings together eleven artists from different generations and positions. Patrick Alphonse, Pavel Chirkin, Sebran D Argent, François Dupuy, Siu- Ling Ha, Jürgen Heinemann, Peter Jordanov, Dalia Karg, Xavier Maurel, Némorin und Georges Saillard are working almost exclusively in the field of analogue photography in clear distinction to the flood of digital pictures of today- an homage to traditional, artistic techniques. HEAVEN is the first group exhibition of these artists and, for several members, the first public presentation of their works. The show includes a total of 100 exhibits.
Marc Riboud World. Politics. Life World politics and daily life, awareness and anonymity, public sphere and intimacy in the pictures of Marc Riboud (*1923) human beings, regardless of social status or societal role, are at the heart of his work. The confrontation of the portraits of Winston Churchill, Fidel Castro, Mao or the Dalai Lama with photographs of people and situations from within the center of society show that behind every orchestration stands a human being in all his privateness. In this context Riboud raises the question whether instead of the dictator, an unknown person working against the system can remain remembered in the collective memory. Marc Riboud s pictures, with their strong visual imagery and impressive subject material, join the ranks of classic reportage photography. For over 60 years he has captured global affairs and helped form the media image of historical and political events. In 1953 he joined the newly established photo agency MAGNUM Photos at the invitation of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa and served as president of the agency from 1975-1976. Marc Riboud became famous for his photographic reports and travel photography from numerous countries among them India, China, Vietnam, Algeria and the former USSR. The presents the first solo exhibition of Marc Riboud in Berlin. The show includes 30 exhibits.
