Name: Section: Date: Thursday, November 8 Due Date: Thursday, January 3 Independent Reading Project Biography, Autobiography, Memoir For your second Independent Reading Project, you will be reading about and researching a person of your choice! The goal here is to Be Inspired! by someone who has done great things in the world whether it be in the world of science, technology, history, politics, sports, art, performing arts, music, etc. Part of this project is to read a biography, autobiography, or memoir. Your chosen biography, autobiography, or memoir should be about someone who has overcome obstacles, done amazing things, or who has changed the world in small or big ways. Our very own Andrews Middle School library has an ample amount of resources. We will spend a class at the library with Ms. Johnson to get started on this project. * Even though you may have an idea of the person you want to research, Ms. Johnson and I encourage you to glance through all options. You never know when you might be inspired or intrigued by a person in a field unrelated to something you know! Examples of Interesting, Intriguing, Inspiring Stories 1. facing adversity 7. in science or medicine 2. during turbulent times 8. authors 3. in politics 9. adventurers 4. in sports 10. artists 5. in business 11. various group 6. in war time or during the Holocaust * Check out my Weebly page for links to famous people and popular biographies! Presentation Options: (choose one!) 1. Create a Poster 2. Create a Prezi or Google Slides 3. Create a Google Site 4. Create an Adobe Spark Video
Regardless of which presentation route you choose, all of them require the same exact information! Your project must include Cover: Book title, author, and copyright date of book. (Don t forget your own name and section!) 2. Images: Provide at least 3 pictures or detailed drawings of the person you researched. 3. Major Accomplishment: Discuss one major accomplishment this person achieved. Make sure to share the struggle they endured throughout their journey. (8-10 sentences) 4. Words of Wisdom - From their experience, what lesson do you think your person would share with people? Share one important lesson this person would teach others. Hint: this is probably a lesson they learned themselves. Explain how they learned this lesson themselves.(8-10 sentences) 5. Star Rating: Give the book you read a star rating (5 = best!) and give reasons for the rating (6-8 sentences) 6. Keep-the-Quote - Include at least 3 meaningful quotes spoken or written by your person that you found in your book. (Don t forget proper citations!) Due Dates: Tuesday, November 13th name of person you have chosen (post on Google Classroom by Monday night) Wednesday, November 14th book you have chosen to read (post on Google Classroom by Wednesday night) Wednesday, November 21st Google Classroom Journal #1 Wednesday, November 28th Google Classroom Journal #2 Wednesday, December 5th Google Classroom Journal #3 Monday, December 17th Google Classroom Journal #4 (due Sunday night on Google Classroom) Parent Check-Ins Parent Signature 11/21/18 My student has read ¼ of the book. 11/28/18 My student is ½ way through the book. 12/5/18 My student is ¾ done with the book. 12/17/18 My student is done or almost done reading the book and will begin working on the presentation portion of the project.
Directions for Creating a GOOGLE SITE Use Google Sites to create a website to tell about the biography and/or the person in the biography. Use your school Google account to login and create your website on the school domain. Make your site visually attractive and easy to read (Note: you will want to organize the required content on different pages of your website. Do not put all of the information on one page. *Each requirement above should have it s own page. Link here to a sample copy of a website: afrank Your website does not have to look exactly like this, but this will give you an idea of how you could organize and format. Tip: Plan out how you would like to group information and required content on different pages on your website before you start creating your website. Think about what you need to include, how you d like it to look, whether some elements might go well on the same page. Tip: You may want to write #3, 4, and 5 on Google docs first so that you can edit, use spell check, and make sure it is well written. Then you can copy and paste the text into your website. Publish the website: 1. Use the Preview feature to view your website in publish mode. 2. Return to edit mode to make final corrections. 3. Use the Publish button to publish your website. Publish your site to the Medford Public Schools domain only. 4. Input a name for your website in Site location field at top. This name will appear after 5. SELECT Anyone at medford.k12.ma.us. DO NOT SELECT Anyone on the web. 6. DO NOT SELECT Allow my site to appear in search results. 7. Select Save. 8. Congratulations your website is published! **Send the link to Ms. Abrimian on Google Classroom!**
Directions for Creating an Adobe Spark Video Use Adobe Spark Video to tell about the biography and/or the person in the biography. This easy-to-use tool combines your voice and images so that you can tell a story about the person in the biography or about the biography. Adobe Spark Video is a free application available on IOS devices and other desktop operating systems. You will need to set up a free account with Adobe Spark Video (please check with your guardians and ask for assistance in setting up this account). Download Spark Video for free here. Want to take a look at a short sample video? Here is a partially completed video on Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl : This is a sample and is not complete. Your video does not have to look like this, but this will give you an idea of how you could organize. Tip: Plan! Plan! Plan! Think about how you want to relay the information required in the list below Write a script for what you will say on each portion of the video. (The application has you record one page at a time and then links them all together into a video). It is much easier to record the pages in the order you want than it is to go back and rearrange later. Tip: Do your writing in Google Docs. Edit and finalize before you start recording. *You will be passing in the written portion! *Record, add images/icons/text/photos to each page, select your music from the choices provided, edit, and publish.
Publish the video: 1. You can view each frame by using the gray play button below the frame. If you want to change the recording, you simply hold the record button. Note that there is no way to go back so once you re-record something, you can t go back to previous version. 2. To preview and publish your video, select the play button in gray box at lower left of screen. 3. At the end of the preview, you will be asked if you want to Keep Editing or Share. Select Share. 4. Share will bring you to a screen like the one below. Toggle the Get Noticed button to the left so that it is off. This will remove your video from internet search. 5. Select how you want to share your video. Recommended: Mail a link to yourself by selecting the envelope icon or copy a link to your video onto your clipboard using the clipboard icon. Select one of the two and then select the Share button. 6. Adobe Spark Video will then prepare your video for publishing. It is very important to allow it time to process the publishing. At the end of this process, it will confirm complete. 7. Select Next button. If you chose to Mail, then it will bring you to , and you can send yourself the link. If you chose Clipboard, then it will let you know that the link is copied to the clipboard. You must then go paste the link some place for when you need it. 8. Congratulations! Your video is published! You can test/review your video, and then ** Send the link to Ms. Abrimian on Google Classroom!** ALL PROJECTS SHOULD BE VISUALLY ATTRACTIVE! BE PROUD OF YOUR WORK!
