Using HW3 for the first time Prior to starting HW3: Connect an instrument or a calibration cable with probe (see list below) to a free COM port of your PC. The instrument or calibration cable should be powered. This will allow the software to automatically detect which COM port is being used and the type of instrument connected to it. HygroClip probe with MOKX-03-WIN or T7-03-WIN calibration cable (depends on probe). Note that an electronic circuit is built inside the 25-pin connector of these cables. When started for the first time, HW3 will automatically 1) attempt to detect both the COM port and the instrument connected to it (see Trouble Shooting if this fails). For this reason, it is important to connect an instrument to the COM port of the PC prior to starting HW3 for the first time. After establishing a communication with the instrument, HW3 opens its main window. 1) When HW3 is closed and re-opened (after first time use), it defaults to the COM port and instrument last used. These settings can be changed manually (see Instruction Manual). Before proceeding any further, please open and consult the HW3 instruction manual. Instruction Manual a) First time use: access the manual from the HW3 CD The HW3 instruction manual is structured as a web site (requires a PC with a Browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) and is in the folder HTML_USA, on the HW3 CD. The manual provides detailed instructions for using HW3 and also includes instruction manuals for the HygroClip instruments (hardware). Note: If you do not have a browser, you can install Microsoft IE4 from the HW3 CD (folder Support, folder Program, folder Web, double click on the file ie4setup.exe). To access the instruction manual directly from within HW3, the HW3 CD should be present in your CD drive. Prior to starting HW3 for the first time, be sure to connect a HygroClip based instrument to the COM port. When HW3 is open, the manual is available on-line by clicking on Help and on Instruction Manual in the HW3 main menu bar (see below). Inst_HW3_211a Page 3
At this point you should consider whether or not to copy the HW3 instruction manual from the CD to your PC. If enough space is available on the PC hard drive (about 21 MB), having the manual on the PC offers more convenience since you do not need to have the HW3 CD mounted. b) Copying the HW3 instruction manual from the HW3 CD to your hard drive 1) From My Computer, open the CD and copy the folder Html_usa and its contents to your hard disk (for example: C:\HTML_USA). Close My Computer and remove the CD. 2) On your hard disk, open the folder HW3. Look for a file named cd.ini. (note: depending upon the on/off status of your Hide file selection for known file type. in Windows, you may or may not see the ini file extension. 3) Double click on the file cd.(ini). This file has only one line consisting of one character (usually the letter d, but it can be anything.). Highlight and delete this letter. Enter the letter corresponding to the hard drive where the manual is located. 4) Save this file and close the dialog box. 5) Close My Computer and start the HW3 program. You should be able to access the instruction manual located on your hard drive from the HW3 main menu bar by clicking on Help and on Instruction Manual (see below). Note: some copies of the HW3 CD ROM will not let you copy the entire html_usa folder to your hard drive (Windows will issue an error message during the copying process). Should this happen, please copy the manual from the RIC website as explained below: c) Copying the HW3 instruction manual from the RIC website to your hard drive 1) Go to our website at http://www.rotronic-usa.com. Click on the link Datasheets & Reference and register if you have not already done so (browser should be set to accept cookies). This opens the page Datasheets and Reference Material. Click on the red button to the left of instruction / Installation Manuals. This opens the Instruction Manuals page. Go down the page and click on the link html_usa211a.exe under Software. When the dialog box opens, click on Save and select the root directory of drive C (C:\). Note: html_usa211a.exe is an executable zip file. 2) From My Computer, go to C:\ and double click on html_usa211a.exe. This opens a dialog box: 3) Click on Unzip. The self-extractor creates the directory HTML_USA on your C drive and copies the manual to this directory. It is possible to change C:\ to D:\ or any other drive. After completing the file extraction, you may want to delete the file html_usa.exe from your drive. Inst_HW3_211a Page 4
4) On your hard disk, open the folder HW3. Look for a file named cd.ini. (note: depending upon the on/off status of your Hide file selection for known file type. in Windows, you may or may not see the ini file extension. 5) Double click on the file cd.(ini). This file has only one line consisting of one character (usually the letter d, but it can be anything.). Highlight and delete this letter. Enter the letter corresponding to the hard drive where the manual is located. 6) Save this file and close the dialog box. 7) Close My Computer and start the HW3 program. You should be able to access the instruction manual located on your hard drive from the HW3 main menu bar by clicking on Help and on Instruction Manual (see below). Accessing the Water Activity Functions of HW3 This paragraph concerns only users who have purchased the HygroLab 2 water activity set or who have purchased the HygroData - Quick package for the purpose of measuring water activity with a HygroLab 2 indicator. Users of the HygroLab 3 do not need the HygroData - Quick package to access the water activity functions of HW3. Note: the HygroData - Quick package includes an unlock code that you will have to enter from HW3 (see HW3 instruction manual). If the HygroData - Quick package was ordered at the same time as the HygroLab 2 indicator, the unlock code was entered for you prior to shipping and you can directly use the water activity functions of the HW3 software. Detailed instructions on how to use the HW3 water activity functions (including entering the unlock code) are available in the HW3 instruction manual. See above for instructions on how to open the HW3 instruction manual in your browser, either from the HW3 CD ROM or from your hard drive. To access the instructions specific to water activity measurement: starting from the main page (index page) of the HW3 instruction manual, click on the following hyperlinks:! Instrument Specific Instructions! HygroLab! HW3: HygroLab menu and functions! Aw Measurement When HW3 is running and the HygroLab 2 or 3 has been detected, the water activity functions can be accessed in two different ways: a) from the HygroLab 2 or HygroLab 3 menu (click on HygroLab in the HW3 main menu bar) b) from the Instrument Display Form: click on the button with the blue symbol located to the right of the Measured Values tab. Trouble Shooting Under some circumstances, HW3 stays on the first screen and gives an error message such as COM port busy. When this happens, try any of the following:. click on COM and select search. click on COM and select the COM port that you are using. click on instrument and select search. click on instrument and select the instrument that you are using Note: some software such as HotSync (supplied with the Palm notebook) run in the background and keep control of the COM port. If you get an error message from HW3 such as COM port busy, check that no such program is running. You may have to manually close any such program. Calibration of the HygroClip Probes Each HygroClip probe is shipped fully calibrated and should not require any additional calibration during the first 6 to 12 months of use. Depending on the instrument model used with theses probes, customers who wish to calibrate themselves may need to purchase the MOKX-03-WIN or a T7-03-WIN calibration cable (depends on the model of probe) to connect the HygroClip probe to a PC. When no humidity generator is available for calibration, known reference humidity values can be generated by using a ROTRONIC calibration device and the ROTRONIC certified humidity standards.
