Hardware Announcement February 29, 2000 IBM 3494 Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server Enhances Data Availability and Recovery Overview With IBM s new Magstar 3494 Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server (VTS) configuration, your enterprise gains unmatched peer-to-peer tape copy capabilities. The peer-to-peer tape copy features (an industry first) on the Magstar 3494 Model B18 VTS enhance your data backup and recoverability capabilities by providing you with dual-volume copy, remote functionality, and automatic recovery and switchover. Automated Data Copying Capability With this new capability to automatically copy data between two VTSs, you can improve data availability and data recovery. When the Peer-to-Peer VTS interconnects two Model B18 VTSs using 3494 Virtual Tape Controllers, a copy of any newly created or updated volume is automatically created in both VTSs transparently to your applications and with no host processor resources required. Either volume copy can satisfy specific mount requests. Remote Data Copying Capability The Peer-to-Peer VTS provides the flexibility to separate hardware components for remote backup and recovery which can improve data availability. Interconnected VTSs can also enable remote copy operations for remote vaulting applications. Each component in a Peer-to-Peer VTS is replicated one or more times to maximize data access and eliminate single points of failure. Therefore, access to volumes can then be maintained after component failures. In addition, service on one component of the Peer-to-Peer VTS can occur concurrently with operation of the rest of the Peer-to-Peer VTS. Your installed 3494 Model B18s can be upgraded with these new features and included with the Model in a Peer-to-Peer VTS configuration. Service Improvement Call Home service support is also now available for the 3494 Models B18 and and 3590 Model A60 or A50 Controllers in a 3494. Fulfillment of Preview The features and functions described fulfill the Product Previews of Coupled VTS, logical volume copy, and Call Home included in previous Magstar 3494 Model B18 VTS announcements. Refer to Hardware Announcement 199-041, dated February 16, 1999, and Hardware Announcement 199-187, dated July 27, 1999. Product Preview Additional Virtual Tape Server features and functions planned for future delivery include: Additional ESCON channel attachments Increased tape volume cache capacity Improved peak performance Increased number of logical volumes Attachment of Sun servers Web browser access Key Prerequisites Hardware Attachment to ES/3090, ES/9000, and S/390 systems with ESCON channels. Software Appropriate levels of host system software are required, such as OS/390 (MVS/ESA ) or DFSMS/MVS. At a Glance A Magstar 3494 Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server enhances data availability and recovery through the interconnection of two Model B18 VTSs with new Peer-to-Peer Copy features and new Model Virtual Tape Controllers. Description The Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server (VTS) configuration provides automatic copy of virtual volumes into both 3494 Model B18 VTSs in a Peer-to-Peer VTS. When a volume is requested the Peer-to-Peer VTS automatically retrieves one of the copies from either VTS. For even greater data protection, each VTS in a Peer-to-Peer VTS can be in a different location to protect against disasters. The previewed features and functions will further extend the VTS capability to allow even more data to be stored in a VTS or reduce batch processing windows. With these new options, the VTS can scale across an even wider range of tape performance and capacity needs. The IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library now includes two new models, the Model Virtual Tape Controller and the Model CX0 Auxiliary Frame. The new Peer-to-Peer Copy features on the Model B18 VTS allow two VTSs to be interconnected with four Model s to form a composite Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server library image, which provides both remote and local peer-to-peer copy capability between the two VTSs using ESCON connections. The interconnected components of a Peer-to-Peer VTS are: 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers provide host ESCON attachment and interconnection of two 3494 Model B18 VTSs 3494 Model B18 VTS VTS with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features 3494 Model CX0 Auxiliary Frame holds up to four 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers A Peer-to-Peer VTS, built upon Seascape components, uses robust distributed servers (3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers housed in a 3494 Model CX0 Auxiliary Frame) to interconnect two VTSs (3494 Model B18 VTS) using ESCON attachments. The Peer-to-Peer VTS automatically provides a copy of all newly created or updated virtual volumes in both interconnected VTSs using either of two modes of operation: Immediate Copy which creates a copy in the companion connected VTS prior to completion of a Rewind Unload command and provides the highest level of protection of your data Deferred Copy which schedules creation of a copy in the companion connected VTS after receipt of a Rewind Unload command as activity permits and provides superior protection to most currently available backup schemes Peer-to-Peer VTS A pair of interconnected VTSs in a Peer-to-Peer VTS will appear to attached host processors as a single automated tape library with: Four fully configured independent 3490E tape subsystems with 16 tape drives each (64 virtual tape drives total) Eight ESCON channels Up to 1.7 TB (with 3:1 compression) of disk storage A maximum capacity of 150,000 logical volumes Each Peer-to-Peer VTS will consist of four 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers and two 3494 Model B18 VTSs with each having two or four Disk Storage Capacity features (either 144 GB or 288 GB of disk storage) and four or more Magstar 3590 Model E1A or B1A Tape Drives. A total of 288 GB or 576 GB (864 GB or 1.7 TB with 3:1 compression) of disk storage will be available for tape volume cache and up to twelve 3590 Tape Drives will be available for copy and recall activity. A copy of all virtual volumes will be maintained in both Model B18 VTSs. The Virtual Tape Controllers will automatically create the second copy and maintain the copy synchronization of the two VTSs. The accessibility of the copy will depend on the mode of operation selected, either Immediate Copy or Deferred Copy. The mode of operation will determine the peak performance of the Peer-to-Peer VTS. Performance: The performance of the Peer-to-Peer VTS will depend on customer data characteristics and the mode of copy operation selected. In the Deferred Copy mode, the scheduling of a volume copy will be determined by the Virtual Tape Controller and its execution will have a lower priority than host I/O operations and allow a higher peak period bandwidth. If Immediate Copy mode is selected, then the copy operation is performed during the unload processing of the volume and will have a higher priority than host I/O operations. Remote Operation: The components of the Peer-to-Peer VTS can be separated by ESCON distances up to 26 km to provide the copy of virtual volumes in a remotely located 3494 VTS. One of the 3494 Model B18 VTSs and two Model Virtual Tape Controllers in the Peer-to-Peer VTS can be attached to a 3494 Tape Library that is located up to 26 km from the second 3494 Model B18 VTS and two other Model Virtual Tape Controllers in the Peer-to-Peer VTS that are attached to another 3494 Tape Library. Host system processors can be attached locally to two Model s and remotely to another pair of s; in other words, processors in both locations can be attached to the Peer-to-Peer VTS and process virtual volumes in VTSs in both locations. 3494 Model B18 VTS A 3494 Model B18 VTS with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features is an independently operating distributed server node in a Peer-to-Peer VTS. A 3494 Model B18 with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features incorporates all the functional capability of the 3494 Model B18 except for SCSI host attachment and Advanced Function. The 3494 Model B18 incorporates new channel commands to support large block transfers of compressed logical volumes to and from 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers. New functions in the 3494 Model B18 VTS: Allow the 3494 Model to maintain copy synchronization of the two VTSs Provide expedited deletion of redundant logical volume copies from the tape volume cache It is highly recommended that both 3494 Model B18s be configured with the same disk storage capacity. Each of the 3494 Model B18s in a Peer-to-Peer VTS continues to operate during scheduled or unscheduled service of the other Model B18. 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controller The 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controller provides interconnection between two 3494 Model B18 VTSs with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features and provides two ESCON host attachments for the Peer-to-Peer VTS. Each 3494 Model is an independently operating distributed node within the Peer-to-Peer VTS and continues to 100-052 -2-

operate during scheduled or unscheduled service of another Model. There must be four 3494 Model s in the Peer-to-Peer VTS with each one attaching two 3494 Model B18s at up to 26 km using ESCON directors. Each Model also provides two ESCON host attachments each with 64 paths at distances up to 43 km using appropriate ESCON directors. Each 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controller provides 16 virtual addresses and transfers data between host channels and the VTSs. For a virtual mount on any of its 16 addresses, the Virtual Tape Controller will select one of the two 3494 Model B18 VTSs to support the requested volume processing activities. Each Model Virtual Tape Controller will maintain synchronization of the copy of logical volumes, create logical volume copies using large block transfers of compressed logical volumes, balance workload between the VTSs, direct specific volume mounts to the VTS with a cached copy of the requested virtual volume, and provide status displays on a customer-selected Web site via the customer s intranet. When one of the VTSs is off-line for service, all activity will be directed to the remaining active VTS. When a VTS is returned to an active state, each of the Virtual Tape Controllers will resume copy operations to bring the VTSs into synchronization. A 3494 Model has two modes of operation for creating logical volume copies, either Immediate Copy or Deferred Copy mode. All four 3494 Model s within a Peer-to-Peer VTS must use the same mode of operation. In Immediate Copy mode, while both VTSs are active, a Virtual Tape Controller will initiate the creation of a copy of a volume when a Rewind Unload command is received and will signal completion of the Rewind Unload when the copy operation is complete. If the companion VTS is inactive, then the Rewind Unload command will complete without a copy being made, and the copy creation operation will be given priority when the companion VTS returns to active state. In Deferred Copy mode, a Virtual Tape Controller will schedule the copy operation after a Rewind Unload command is received. Completion time of the copy operation will depend on the activity of the Model B18s. For each 3494 Model, the customer can select which of the two VTSs is to be used to create a volume, or request that the workload be balanced between the two VTSs. Each Model functions as a Web server providing a Web page that may be used to access the Model Virtual Tape Controller for system configuration, status, statistics, and online product documentation. This Web page may only be accessed through the ethernet LAN connection provided on each Model. The configuration and management of the ethernet LAN connection must be provided by the user and its use is optional. 3494 Model CX0 Auxiliary Frame A 3494 Model CX0 Auxiliary Frame provides the housing and power for up to four 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers. There are two power control compartments, each with its own power cord to allow connection to two power sources. A 3494 Model CX0 can be configured with two or four 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers. Peer-to-Peer Copy Features The Peer-to-Peer Copy features can be added to an installed 3494 Model B18 VTS. Existing logical volumes in either of the interconnected VTSs will be copied only after the first successful Rewind Unload command for an existing volume and according to the mode of operation of the Model s. Note that the capability to interconnect two B18s both with existing logical volumes will not be available until 90 days after initial Peer-to-Peer Copy feature shipments. Call Home Service Support The Call Home function, when activated, automatically opens a service alert when a problem occurs with the 3494 Model B18 or or a Magstar 3590 Model A60 or A50 Controller in a 3494 Tape Library. The Call Home process can also be initiated by a user from the 3494 Library Manager operator panel for a 3494 Model B18 or or a Magstar 3590 Model A60 or A50 Controller installed in a 3494 Tape Library. A service representative can be sent to the installation and status information can be transmitted to the Support Center for problem evaluation. In addition, Call Home allows these service alerts to be sent to a pager service so that multiple people, including the customer, can be notified. This function utilizes the Remote Support Features #2710, #2711, or #2712. The service representative can activate or deactivate this function on the 3494 Models B18 VTS or Virtual Tape Controller or the 3590 Model A60 or A50 Controller using service menus. Call Home is supported on the 3590 Model A60 and A50 in stand-alone, Silo, and 3494 Tape Library solutions. As an added benefit, in the 3494 environment, you can initiate the Call Home process via the 3494 library manager operator panel. Product Preview Additional Virtual Tape Server features and functions planned for future delivery include: Additional ESCON channel attachments The maximum number of ESCON attachments on a 3494 Model B18 will be increased from four attachments to a maximum of eight ESCON channel attachments. Increased tape volume cache capacity The maximum disk storage capacity of the VTS will be increased to provide greater than 5 TB of tape volume cache capacity. This can increase the average residency time of a virtual volume in the tape volume cache, thus improving its availability to be re-read while still in the cache. This can result in an improvement in overall mount performance. Improved peak performance The 3494 Model B18 VTS will be enhanced to reduce run times for bandwidth limited jobs. Increased number of logical volumes The maximum number of logical volumes per VTS and the total number of logical volumes per 3494 Tape Library will be increased. Attachment of Sun servers Sun servers will be able to attach to a 3494 Model B18 VTS will be able to share virtual volumes and virtual devices with S/390 and RS/6000 systems. To have the plant ship a Model installed in a Model CX0 frame, specify feature number 9691 on the Model and on the Model CX0. No feature is required on the Model This announcement is provided for your information only. to ship it to the field for adding it to a currently installed Model CX0 (although feature number 4690 needs to be added to the Model CX0 for every Model that is later field installed). Model B18 VTS: Each of the two Model B18 VTSs in a Peer-to-Peer VTS configuration must have the following features: Four Extended Performance ESCON channels 3400 (Extended High Performance Option) or 3200 (ESCON High Performance Option) 3412 (Extended Performance ESCON Channels) 3702 (Disk Storage Capacity quantity of two or four) 4010 (Peer-to-Peer Copy Base quantity of one) 4011 (Peer-to-Peer Copy Increment 1 quantity of one if four of feature #3702 are installed) 5234 (18 m SCSI cables to provide the SCSI cables to attach to the SCSI Extender in the associated Model D12 or #5502) 5236 (Performance Accelerator) Four or more Magstar 3590 Tape Drives (either all Model E1A or all Model B1A) in an associated 3494 Model D12 (or #5502) Drive Frame Both interconnected 3494 Model B18s in a Peer-to-Peer VTS attach to four 3494 Model Virtual Tape Controllers at a maximum distance of 26 km using ESCON directors. It is highly recommended that both 3494 Model B18s be configured with the same disk storage capacity. Two 30.5 meter (100 foot) ESCON cables are included with each #3200 or #3412 feature to attach it to ESCON channels of the Model s. Refer to the Model for the ESCON cables that attach between the Model and host ESCON channels. If different ESCON cable lengths are needed, they must be ordered separately. Refer to the IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0279) for ESCON cable planning information. One remote support feature (#2710, #2711, or #2712) should be specified on each Model B18 to provide rapid diagnostic and remote support capability. The 3494 Model D12 Drive Frame (or #5502) associated with the Model B18 VTS can be located anywhere within the Magstar 3494 Tape Library. No SCSI cables need to be specified on the Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in the associated 3494 Model D12 as they are provided automatically when the following features are specified on that D12: 5233 (SCSI Extender) 9010 (Attached to Model B16/B18) Software Requirements: Software support for the Peer-to-Peer VTS is provided in OS/390. Enhancements to DFSMS/MVS allow the host to recognize that a library is a Peer-to-Peer VTS. The host is aware of the distributed, or peer, VTSs as well as the composite Peer-to-Peer VTS library image that contains virtual drives and logical volumes. The operations staff can request status of distributed VTS libraries and the composite Peer-to-Peer VTS library image. With the enhanced software, the host can identify the originating distributed library related to events and status changes so that the operations staff sees useful messages when intervention is required. In addition, the host logs hourly statistical records from distributed libraries as well as from the composite Peer-to-Peer VTS library image. The OS/390 software support is provided as an Small Programming Enhancement (SPE) for DFSMS/MVS 1.4 and 1.5. For later releases, support is packaged in OS/390. Toleration PTFs are provided for DFSMS/MVS 1.2 and higher. At least one host attached to the Peer-to-Peer VTS must be at DFSMS/MVS 1.4 or higher so that Peer-to-Peer VTS library reliability and serviceability features in the software can be enabled. All other OS/390 hosts attached to a Peer-to-Peer VTS must have a minimum level of DFSMS/MVS 1.2 with the toleration PTFs installed. Compatibility: The Peer-to-Peer VTS appears to attached host system software as four fully configured independent 3490E tape subsystems with 16 tape drives each (64 virtual drives total) in a single composite library with associated Cartridge System Tape or Enhanced Capacity Cartridge System Tape cartridges. This allows applications that use IBM s current 3490E tape drives and automation systems to easily use the Peer-to-Peer VTS. Limitations The Model is connected to the two Model B18s with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features that can be located up to 26 km away with ESCON cables and directors. Each Model can be attached to two ESCON host systems that are located up to 43 km away with ESCON cables and directors. Export and Import of logical volumes is not supported on 3494 Model B18s with feature number 4010. A 3494 Model B18 with feature number 4010 must have: Two or four of feature number 3702 (Disk Storage Capacity) Feature number 5236 (Performance Accelerator) Four Extended High Performance ESCON Channels Feature number 4010 (Peer-to-Peer Copy Base) in a Model B18 is mutually exclusive with feature number 3422 (SCSI Host Attachment) Feature number 4011 (Peer-to-Peer Copy Increment 1) is required when there are four of feature number 3702 (Disk Storage Capacity) installed Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: Physical planning is a customer responsibility. Detailed physical planning information is in the Magstar 3494 Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0279). Cable Orders: Required SCSI cables for connecting Magstar 3590 tape drives in an associated 3494 Model D12 Drive Unit are supplied by specifying features number 5233 and 9010 on the Model D12, and feature number 5234 on the Model B18. Required SCSI cables for connecting Magstar 3590 tape drives in an associated feature number 5502 come with feature number 5502, and feature number 5234 on the Model B18. Two 30.5 meter (100 foot) ESCON cables are included with each Model to attach it to ESCON channels of ES/3090, ES/9000, or S/390 systems. Two 30.5 meter (100 foot) ESCON cables are included with each feature number 3412 on the Model B18 to attach it to ESCON channels of the Model. If different ESCON cable lengths are needed, they must be ordered separately. 100-052 -2-
