Page 3 / 15 1 GCM MOD GMM EC.1 1.1 Functional description The GCM MOD GMM EC.1 module is used to connect the GMM EC control unit to a Modbus network. It facilitates reading out data as well as external control via an RS485 interface. The protocol used is Modbus RTU. The RS485 interface of the Modbus module has galvanic separation. The GCM MOD GMM EC.1 module can be used for all GMM EC variants. Both the information transmitted via the bus interface and the protocol used are described in detail in the current Modbus interface specification.

Installation must only be performed by personnel with appropriate professional training. The shielding of bus lines must be earthed at one end only. Suitable shielding and routing measures must be taken to ensure that mains cables and motor cables do not cause any interference in signal and control lines. Bus cables must be connected via shielded cables. Recommended cables: Belden 9841, Lapp 2170203, Lapp 2170803, Helukabel 81910 Temperature in operation: Temperature for storage and transport -20 C ~ +70 C -20 C ~ +70 C, dry The GMM EC with Modbus adapter GCM MOD GMM EC.1 complies with the EMC standards: EN 61000-6-2 (Immunity for industrial environments) EN 61000-6-3 (Noise emission for residential use) IEC 61000-4-4/-5/-6/-11

Page 8 / 15 2 Installation 2.1 Requirements 2.1.1 Handling The GCM MOD GMM EC.1 reacts sensitively to electrostatic discharge. CAUTION Take appropriate precautionary measures when handling the module. An example of a precautionary measure is the wearing of an ESD wristband which is connected to an earthing point. Turn off the GMM EC power supply before beginning installation. 2.1.2 Hardware The GCM MOD GMM EC.1 can be installed on hardware version 3.2 or later of the EC controller board. It cannot be subsequently installed on earlier hardware versions. The hardware version can be found on the top and bottom of the circuit board. Since it is not always possible to identify the hardware version when the circuit board is installed, the easiest way of finding out a compatible version is by looking at the two mounting holes for the GCM, as shown in Image 2: EC/08 controller board and Image 3: EC/16 controller board. EC/08 controller board EC/16 controller board
Page 9 / 15 2.2 Installation 1) Disconnect the power supply to the GMM EC. 2) Remove the upper control unit from the GMM EC by loosening the screws as shown in Image 4: GMM EC/08 + GMM EC/16 and by disconnecting the connecting cable from the pin header of the lower controller PCB. GMM EC/08 + GMM EC/16 3) If not already done, insert the ribbon cable into the pin connector socket of the GCM. When doing so, ensure that the cable exits at the side to the left, as shown in Image 5: GCM MOD GMM EC with ribbon cable. GCM MOD GMM EC with ribbon cable 4) Now insert the free multipoint connector of the ribbon band into the corresponding pin connector socket of the controller circuit board. When using in the GMM EC/08, the ribbon cable is to be laid in a loop.
Page 10 / 15 GMM EC/08 cable loop 5) Place the GCM on the EC controller circuit board with the two spacer bolts screwed in place in the mounting holes of the controller circuit board and press it down slowly. The spacer bolts must snap into place in the controller circuit board. If the bolts are correctly snapped into place it is no longer possible to remove them. The two additional spacer bolts are used for mechanical stabilisation and merely lay on the controller circuit board. They are not screwed in place. The upper spacer bolt fixes the position of the GCM towards the support plate of the control unit. Check that the spacer bolts are correctly seated before continuing with the installation. 6) Check that the DIP switch is correctly set for normal operation. see graphic Connections, Page 4 and see table Slide switch, Page 5 Activate or deactivate the termination for the Modbus according to the position of the GMM EC on the Modbus network. Termination may be activated only on the first and last units on the Modbus network. All other units must have termination deactivated. See Modbus network - termination, earthing, shielding, Page 12 7) For mounting the upper control unit, first reconnect the connecting cable to the pin header of the controller PCB and then attach the support plate again using the screws from step 2. 8) Connect the shield of the Modbus cable to the corresponding subplate on the EC controller board. If you are using a GMM EC/16 with 16 fans, use the upper subplate to fit the shielding. see Image 4: GMM EC/08 + GMM EC/16, Page 9 Recommended cable types are listed under Installation / Operating conditions, Page 6. The standard connection for the shielding is on the lower subplate, onto which the shielding for the fans is also fitted. See Modbus network - termination, earthing, shielding, Page 12 9) Connect the signal lines of the Modbus cable to the terminals of terminal strip X2. see table Connections, Page 4 The Modbus interface is galvanically isolated from the GMM-EC. 10) The unit is now ready for operation. After switching on the GMM EC supply voltage, the operating state of the GCM MOD GMM EC.1 can be verified using the LED D1. see table LED, Page 5
