Because of integrated drivers, the high power outputs of the card are suitable for direct triggering of valves, relays and stepper motors. Free wheeling diodes enable direct triggering of inductive loads without the need of further protection systems. The status of output is indicated over LEDs. The inputs are not galvanically isolated and are directly compatible with TTL or CMOS logic signals. Through the pullup-resistance, switch contact or opto-coupler can also be directly evaluated. Lowpass filters and a protective circuit ensures safety against interferences and transients. In the Eurocard version, the input status is indicated over LEDs. The circuit concept with additional Watchdog guarantees protection in case of USB triggering failure and this is independent of the controller. In such a case, all outputs are made inactive. The standard rail mounting of the card enables direct assembly in switchgear cabinets. The switching status of inputs and outputs is indicated with LEDs. The connection is through the USB-port of PC (USB 1.1 specification, 2.0 compatible). 2 Accessories As accessories, a matching USB connection cable and also a power supply unit Standard 12 V / 630 ma or 24 V / 315 ma) are available. For safe operation, the PCB should be placed in a suitable housing (e.g. Ordering No. GEH-REL). The I/O module is compatible with the software "Profilab" with which regulation and control programs can be created under graphical environment without any programming knowledge. Installation System requirements: Operating system Windows 98, 2000 or XP (not for Windows NT). USBconnection 1.1 or higher, CDROM-drive, 64 MB RAM (XP: 128 MB), minimum 2 MB free hard disk space. For a first test of the card, the input and output terminals can be left unwired, as the I/O status is also indicated over the LEDs. The current supply of the USB part is through the interface and supply to the outputs is from the external power supply unit. The integration to a PC is over a standard connection cable directly to the PC. The USB connection corresponds to specification 1.1 and is compatible to 2.0. During first time connection to the PC, the standard windows dialogue box starts for driver installation. Install the required device driver, by manually selecting the device driver in the Hardware assistant. The driver files are on the CD in the folder "\Driver\EZUSB\Driver_XP_2K" (for Windows 98, it is in the directory Driver_98). After this, install the software USB-Tools. This is on the CD under the directory \Software\USB\USB-Tools. This software is required for testing the card and setting the card number. Now start the software USB-Tools. In the application window, the connected I/O card with the description 32OUT-32IN and card number appears. By double clicking on the device description, a window opens up in which you can test and also configure various functions of the card. Settings Card number: If you are operating only one card on the PC, then you don't need to do any settings for this. However, up to 32 USB-cards can be operated on a PC. For operating multiple cards, a unique card number must be assigned to each card. For this, the card is to be connected to the PC and the write protection jumper connection WP is to be closed with a shorting plug. The assigning of new card address is done with the corresponding dialogue box in the window of USB-TOOLS. The relay cards are supplied with a watchdog circuit which switches off the relay if there is no data transfer through the USB port for a certain period of time. For example, if the USB driver is no more functioning properly. However, triggering errors of the super imposed application software can not be detected by the Watchdog! The time delay can be set between 5 to 300 seconds approx. through suitable jumpers! The product should be installed and used only according to the intended application. The I/O card may also contain voltage over 24 V depending on the circuit involved. Contact with live voltage parts leads to fatal dangers. Therefore, fitment and maintenance of the card shall be carried out by only trained personnel. The USB card must be assembled inside a switchgear cabinet or in a fully closed plastic housing. Mounting and servicing operations should be carried out only after switching off the voltage. Touching the electronic components in switched off condition should also be avoided. Electronic components can get damaged due to electrostatic discharge process. The product is not meant for controlling electrical systems which perform safety related functions. In normal operation also, there is always a danger of malfunctioning due to any fault or failure of the control system itself (PC) or e.g. due to any inherent software error of the control program. The user has to ensure that there are no consequential damages due to malfunctioning or undefined switching status of the relay. This all is more possible, if heavy loads like heaters or motors are triggered. Due to wrong tightening of screws of the connection terminals or by use of inappropriate tool, the terminals can get damaged because of which the insulation or the contact can get disturbed. Badly connected leads can come out during operation and cause a serious risk to safety. Due to contact resistance at terminal connections, there can be increased heat generation which can cause fire. Wrongly wired connections can destroy electric components and cause other damages. Watchdog Safety instructions Page 2

3 In order to complete the process, the program must be terminated and the card should be taken out of the USB port, so that further new numbers can be released. On the next start, the card is recognized with the new card number. In this way, proceed with all the cards, which are to be operated with the PC. Don't forget to remove the write protection jumper, in order to protect the card from inadvertent overwriting. Functional test: All the functions of the card can be tested with the help of the software USBTOOLS. Duly consider the limiting values provided in the data sheet while wiring the inputs and outputs. The card can get damaged due to wrong wiring and connection to high voltage! In the model with HD plug connector, the pins should be connected with your own peripherals. The Europe card version is additionally provided with input terminals. Testing the digital output: The functioning of digital output can be cross checked in the application window of USB Tools by activating/de-activating the white check box under the corresponding output. The corresponding LED must glow on the card and the associated OC-output is connected against ground. By selecting the relay control mode and time duration, the output can get connected across automatically. Testing the digital input: The functioning of digital inputs can be cross checked by switching the input against ground. The LED of the associated input glows on the card (Note: LEDs are only in model - HU with terminals). In the application window of USB Tools, the red signal with respect to the input changes to green. The inputs are not galvanically isolated and are compatible to standard CMOS or TTL-signals for 3.3 V or 5 V voltage level. Ground reference switch contact and opto-coupler can also be evaluated by the pullup-resistance. The LED is only provided in the Model EU. The input is protected against transients by means of series resistor and clamping diode. However, voltages over 5 V DC and high energy transients can damage the input! Output Powerful Darlington driver ULN 2803 has been used as the driver. The data sheet of the component is available on the CD in the directory /DOKU. Its operation is possible only with DC voltage of max. 24 V DC, the maximum output current in closed loop condition is around 0.5 A. The driver is not protected against short circuit and gets damaged on overload. During application of reverse polarity protection diode, the sum total of all output currents should not exceed 1 A, and in case of external wiring, up to 3 A continuous current is allowed. The external power supply unit must be suitable for the required current. For further information, please visit our website: Input Testing the Watchdog: First switch ON some outputs so that the LEDs on the cards start glowing. Then close the window of USB-TOOLS. After some time (as per the setting of Watchdog jumpers), the outputs and the associated LEDs must turn off by itself. Page 3

The measurement circuit is to be simply drawn to create a project. Without any programming knowledge, the status of I/O-Module can be applied in the project. Arithmetic and logical building blocks take care of the linking and processing of input values. Modules like pulse generators, timers, relay cards etc. provide extensive possibilities for control and regulation. Various instruments, recorders and charts are available for storage and representation of values and display and control of key parameters of the measurement set-up. The system is operated through a self designed front panel, on which switches, potentiometers, displays, LEDs, instruments etc. are arranged. The software also provides facility of compiling the project into an EXE file which can run without PROFILAB. The inputs are provided with a pullup resistance against +3.3 V USB voltage, so that the operation is possible with switch contacts or CMOS TTL logic signals in the voltage range / 5 V. The pullup resistance is of 4.7 k-ohm. Input voltages up to +5 V are possible. Only in type EU: The model has an additional LED directly connected across +3.3 V USB voltage with 4.7 kohm series resistance. The 5 V at the input terminals from the external voltage of the power supply unit is stabilised on the circuit board and is made available at the screw terminals. The outputs are directly triggered by ULN 2803, which switches against ground. The positive operating voltage only needs to be connected, if the internal free wheeling diode of ULN 2803 are being used, for example, if inductive loads are to be triggered. The V supply at the output terminals is provided by the external power supply unit over a series connected reverse polarity protection diode. The max. overall current should not exceed 1 A, otherwise the voltage supply of the actuators must be blocked externally without the reverse polarity protection diode. The external power supply must be able to supply the operating current of actuators. In external connection, the current should not exceed 3 A per group because of the layout of printed circuit.
