Comenius University in Bratislava Faculty of Natural Sciences Department of Human Geography and Demogeography Division of Demography and Demogeography Slovak Republic USER S GUIDE FOR THE WEB APPLICATION THE CENSUAL GEOGRAPHIC AND METAINFORMATION DATABASE OF SLOVAKIA Vladimíra Tomášiková 2003
PREFACE In the 12 th century the population of Slovakia encountered approximately half a million inhabitants, at the beginning of the 18 th century it increased to about one million and at the turn of the 19 th century to almost two million. During the next two centuries it more than doubled reaching 5,4 million in the year 2000. The first census on the territory of Slovakia took place in 1857 and since that time the wide range of demographic and demogeographic data from individual years of census has appeared. Censual data are commonly presented in the analogue form in statistical lexicons and on historical maps. Only part of the most actual data is in the digital form. This was the main reason, why we decided to tackle the task of creation of the Demogeographic Information System of the Slovak Republic, which could interlink statistical lexicons and historical maps. Our aim was connected traditional forms of statistical census with GIS technology, particularly the connected statistical sources - historical census lexicons with digital maps. We designed WEB application as a part of the purpose-built Geographic Information System, which can be used as a metainformation catalogue of the Slovak censual data, providing alongside the spatial database for demogeographic and demographic applications in various levels of resolution. This application presented the starting stage of the system creation, aimed at the assembling and systematisation of censual data since 1921 until present time in the form of the metadata catalogue. The second stage of our work is concerned with the system of the spatial statistical units of the Slovak Republic identification, integration and data hierarchy of these units on the background of time changes in the regional administrative division of Slovakia in the years of census performance. The functionality of created geographical database, in the form GeoMedia WebMap application, is presented: User s Guide The CENSUAL GEOGRAPHIC and METAINFORMATIC DATABASE of SLOVAKIA Dagmar Kusendová

A General Map Window The General Map Window is cardinal for all windows because it serves for viewing of all dynamic maps, which eventuate on your queries to the main database conducted through the windows B, C, D, E and F. Functions and descriptions of individual windows are provided hereunder. B Časové rezy = Time layers In this window, you may select from the roll bar one of the nineteen time layers. These 19 time layers represent the years of censual performance in Slovakia. After choosing the time layer, the relevant regional administrative division of Slovakia on the level of regions (historical regions), districts (historical districts) and settlements in a form of a dynamic map will appear in the General Map Window. In the time layers of censuses of 1961, 1970, 1980, 1991 and 2001 the borders of settlements are displayed as valid per dates, towards which the results of the population censuses were recalculated and published in the statistics lexicons issued in 1965, 1974, 1982, 1992 and 2002.In other time layers, the settlement borders valid to 31.12.2002 are represented. Click on the roll bar and select the relevant time layer An example below shows, for instance, the change of a settlement borders due to the development of the country s administrative division. The first picture displays the border of the settlement Medzev in 1991, at the time when the 2
settlement Vyšný Medzev was a part of it. However, on 30.6.1999 the settlement Vyšný Medzev was administratively detached from the settlement Medzev as a new independent settlement. Its new form and borders are displayed on the second map in the time layer 2001. 3
C Zoznam = List of regions and districts After the selection of the relevant time layer, the list of regions (historical regions) and districts (historical districts) will pop up. In the time layers 1961, 1970, 1980, 1991 and 2001 there is an option to click on the name of the relevant region or district and to get this territory in General Map Window in enlarged view (not as a part of the Slovak Republic) in the form of a new dynamic map. In other time layers this window serves only as an informative list. Click on the interactive name of a region and see its enlarged view in the General Map Window No interactive options for regions, only an informative list 4
D Searching Window Nájdi obec = Search a settlement This window serves for searching and displaying selected settlements in whichever time layer. You have to write down the name of requested settlement in this window. The function "Search a settlement" does not differentiate small and big letters, although its name has to be written with diacritic marks (if it contains any). When the name of a settlement was inserted, confirm your choice by clicking the button "OK", or, alternatively, press "Enter". After confirmed selection, the required settlement will be submitted in the General Map Window in an enlarged view, highlighted with red colour. Though, if your request does not match any settlement in the database, the function will reply "Obec nenájdená = A settlement was not found". Write the correct name of the settlement in the left window, click the button OK or Enter and view this settlement in the General Map Window. When the incorrect or nonexisting name of the settlement was entered, the words: Obec nenájdená = The settlement was not found will appear below the window 5
In case, you have written correct name of the settlement, which correspond with more than one settlement on the territory of Slovakia, the General Map Window will display all found settlements, which will be enlarged and highlighted with red colour. For example, the name of the settlement Závada match with the settlements of the same name in the districts Topoľčany, Veľký Krtíš, Spišská Nová Ves and Vranov nad Topľou (see below). E Table for changes of the settlements If you click in the General Map Window on any settlement in the time layers 1961,1970,1980,1991 and 2001, the table E for the settlements administrative changes (i.e. the date and the type of the change) will appear in its lower right part. Types of changes could be as follows: affiliation, detachment, merger, division or the name change. The administrative changes will display in this window only in case, any changes towards this settlement were applied in the years 1961 2002. If the name of the settlement had not been changed during this time, the text "Obec bez zmeny = The settlement without change" would appear in this window. In other time layers this window is not active. 6
F Window of the administrative history By clicking on the settlement in whichever time layer, the new window F (The administrative history of the settlement) will be displayed in the left upper part of the screen. There is digestedly displayed the regional administrative development of the settlement from the year 1785 to the year 2001. Click the button Zavrieť = Close to close the window F. F Click on the settlement to activate the window F in the time layers 1960-2001. If any changes were applied the s ettlement, table E would be also activated If the settlement remains without any changes in the time layers 1960-2001, the text obec bez zmeny = the settlement without change will be seen 7
The window F is independent from other windows and may be closed by clicking on the button "Zavrieť = Close", which is located below this window. In both windows, the name of the relevant settlement and its identification number valid at present will be displayed. If you click on the settlement in another time layers, than 1960-2001 only the window F will be seen, the window E will be not active After the description of the windows use, let us move on to the functions of buttons. Next Functions 1 Fit all By clicking on this button you will achieve the maximum view of the requested map in the General Map Window. 8
2 Zoom by rectangle By clicking on this button it is necessary to draw the rectangle in the General Map Window above the part of the map, you want to zooming. 3 Zoom-in By clicking on this button and than into the map in the General Map Window, which you want to zoom-in, you will zoom in the part of the map with its simultaneous centring on a specific point. 4 Zoom-out Similarly, by clicking on this button and then into the map in the General Map Window, which you want to zoom-out, you will zoom out the part of the map with its simultaneous centring on a specific point. 9
5 Centre By clicking on this button and then into the General Map Window, the function will centre the dynamic map in this window in a centre point (selected by you) without any zoom change (without zoom-in and zoom-out). 6 Refresh This button will refresh the initial view of the General Map Window (the whole territory of the Slovak Republic). It is advisable to use this button having selected a settlement, a region or a district using window C "Zoznam = List of the regions and districts". 7 Move By clicking on this button and after drawing in the General Map Window the movement vector, you will move the dynamic map in a direction of specified vector. 10
8 Print This button allows you to print the dynamic map displayed in the General Map Window. 9 View, 10 Tooltip and 11 Label These buttons provide the three levels of displaying the time layers. It is possible to display the actual or historical levels of regions ("kraj/župa"), districts ("okres/stolica") and settlements ("obec"). But it depends on the time layer, which is active in the General Map Window. For the level of regions and districts is set-up the combination of three buttons 9, 10, 11. But only two buttons 9, 10 refer to the level of settlements. The names and numbers of regional administrative units of these three levels are provided. Depending on which of the time layers is active, the name of the regional administrative unit and its sum is changing. Primary all three buttons in the General Map Window are set-on. You can get required displaying the dynamic map to in the General Map Window setting on and off these three buttons. 9 View You can set on or off the colour areas of regions, the (black bold) borders of districts and the (blue thin) borders of settlements by clicking on this button. The relevant list of administrative units (regions or districts) will appear in the window C, according to the level you are clicking on. As it was explained in the description for the window C, you may display them separately in the General Map Window. 10 Tooltip If you move the cursor over the map, you will see the interactive labels. 12 Download Using this button you may download the map of the relevant time layer to the Shape File format (*.shp), that is displayed in the General Map Window. These maps have to be saved in the compressive format of a *.zip file, because of the mass of data and for the faster downloading. The mass of the data of a *.zip file (more than 1,98Mb) is impossible to save on a floppy disk (1,44Mb). One of the ways how to save such a file is to divide it into the smaller files using the Windows Commander (Total Commander). In the top menu, in the item Files there is a function "Split file", for splitting downloaded files. Select such file using the Insert button. The file will split into the files (*.001, *.002, *.crc) after you have confirmed the mass of the data (1,44 Mb) for the a new file. After that it is possible to save these files on two floppy disks. Click on the button "Stiahnuť = Download" and download a *zip file which includes the shape file of the borders of a region administrative division in the relevant time layer To combine such three files together, a similar procedure is needed. You will get marked files combined by copying them to shared directory and using the function "Combine File", which is in the top menu of the item "Files". By this way you will achieve the compressed *.zip file. Using the function "Decompression" ("Unpack specific files") in the top menu of the item "Files", the there files *.shp, *.dbf and *.shx will be unpacked. These three files can be further imported to the applications GeoMedia, ArcView, MapInfo, Topol and other. So 14
shaped files contain a graphic map and a database, which include the names of settlements, districts (historical districts) and regions (historical regions). 13 Metacatalogue The button M is used for providing information on detected data (metadata) of the Czechoslovak and Slovak population censuses in the time layers 1921 2001, referred to the regional administrative unites of the relevant layer. This button is not active in the other time layers. The metadata in each metacatalogue are divided into eight major sections for the better orientation and possibility to compare them within several metacatalogues. The eight major sections are the following: serial number, sort of the residence, relation to the housing user, basic data, family, education, employment, and other, which are represented in the window G Metacatalogue. Click the button "Zavrieť = Close" to close the window G Metacatalogue Click the button M in the relevant time layer and se e the window G Metacatalogue G 14 Help There is no need of explaining this button, as you have already clicked on this button and familiarised yourself with all the options this application provides you with. 15
