New and higher skills may be new to the novice and are the focus for learning in this presentation Once you have opened SketchUp, go to Window and select Preferences. 2. Select Template and choose Metric Millimeters-3D. We are using this template because we are doing a product design. Therefore, on some versions of SketchUp you will need to select Product Design & Woodwork, Millimetres. Note: It is often necessary to start a new file to use the new template. Go to File then New. 4 ZigZag Education,

3 3. Now select the Circle tool and draw a circle on the base starting by clicking on the axis origin point for the circle centre. Look for the yellow dot that shows the origin point. 4. Using the mouse, move the cursor to enlarge the circle. DO NOT PRESS ENTER. First type 40 and then press Enter. This will give you a circle with a 40 mm radius which will be quite small. Roll the middle wheel of the mouse to zoom in on the circle. The mouse is smart and will zoom into the area where you put the cursor. 5 Some useful tips Note: If you make a mistake at any time during this tutorial you can just go to Edit and choose Undo from the drop-down menu, or press the Alt and Backspace keys. You can use the Orbit tool to change the angle that you are viewing your design from. You can do the same by pressing the middle wheel of your mouse. You can also use the Pan tool to grab and move your object around the screen. Alternatively, you can pan by pressing the Shift key and holding down the mouse's middle wheel. 6 ZigZag Education,

4 5. Now select the Push/Pull tool. This is for extruding to make shapes three-dimensional. 6. With the Push/Pull tool, click on the shape you have drawn and it will be highlighted with a blue texture. Move the cursor upwards and it will pull the shape into a 3D form. DO NOT PRESS ENTER. Type 95 and press Enter to make the shape 95 mm high. The shape should now be a solid cylinder like this. 7. To hollow out the cylinder, you are going to use the Offset tool. Select this from the toolbar at the top of the screen With the Offset tool selected, hover over the top surface of the cylinder and it will highlight in light blue. Click on the circumference of the top and it will turn navy blue. 9. Start to move the cursor towards the centre of the circle. You will see a black circle appear, running parallel to the edge. Type 4 then press Enter. This will make the thickness of the mug 4 mm. 10. Now using the Push/Pull tool, select the inner circle and push it down a little way. Type 91 and then press Enter. This will ensure that there is a bottom to the mug. Next you are going to form the handle. This can be tricky! 11. You will need to select the Arc tool from the toolbar. To start the arc, click near to the red axis line. Move the cursor along the red axis and type 65 to give it its length. Start arc here 12. Now move the cursor up to create an arc. MAKE SURE THAT THE BLUE AXIS GUIDELINE IS SHOWING. Type 40 and press Enter. 8 ZigZag Education,

5 End of the arc 13. Use the Line tool to draw a 7 mm line at 90 degrees to the red axis at the end of the arc (this is the green axis). Make sure that you start at the endpoint indicated by the green dot (press the Esc key if the line will not let go). 14. Now make another 7 mm line, starting in the same place but going in the opposite direction, to make one continuous 14 mm line. 15. Use the Arc tool to start forming the handle s profile. Start by clicking on one endpoint of the new line and then the other. Stretch out an arc along the red axis, type 5 and press Enter. A semicircle shape will form. 16. Then do the same in the opposite direction Use the Eraser tool to remove the two construction lines from the inside of the profile. 18. For the next bit, you will need the Large Tool Set. If it is not shown on the left-hand side of your screen as a column of icons then you can get it from the main toolbar under View then Toolbars and then select Large Tool Set. 19. Now select the Follow Me tool. 10 ZigZag Education,

6 20. With the Follow Me tool selected, click on the profile of the handle. It will be highlighted in light blue. 21. Now pull, or drag, the profile along the sweep of the arc. It will highlight in red as you go. 22. When you get to the end of the arc, a red dot will appear to show that you have arrived at the Endpoint Orientate your drawing so that you can use the Select tool to put a box around just the handle. It will be highlighted with navy blue lines. 24. Use the Move tool to move the handle component away from the mug s body, so you have room to rotate it. 12 ZigZag Education,

7 26. As you sweep the cursor down, the handle will freely rotate. To ensure that the handle is at the correct angle to meet the mug, type 90 and then press Enter. The handle will now be at a right angle to its original position and ready to stick to the mug s body. 25. With the handle highlighted, select the Rotate tool from the toolbar. Move the cursor to a point above one end of the handle. The cursor should look like a green protractor. Click to create the axis of rotation, and with the cursor follow the red axis from left to right Now use the Move tool to position the handle onto the mug. This may require you to orientate the mug in several ways to make sure the handle is on straight. This includes looking inside the mug to ensure that the handle has not poked through. 28. Now select the Paint Bucket tool. A window will pop up, like the one on the left. This is the pallet that you can colour your objects from. You are going to use a pattern of your own to decorate the mug. First click on the Create Material icon and a new window will pop up, like the one on the right. Tick the box Use Texture Image. 14 ZigZag Education,

8 29. Another window like this will pop up and you will need to find the image for your mug by looking in the Pictures file on your computer (you may need to create one). 30. Once you have selected a picture and clicked on OK, the cursor will have changed into a paint bucket. Use this to fill the outside of the mug s body and it will now have your personalised pattern on it. 31. If the pattern is too small on the mug, perhaps even looking like tiles, then adjust the size of your image by selecting the Create Material icon again and changing the sizes in the boxes indicated here. The length and width are linked so that the image is proportional (unless you unlink them). 15 Here is the finished result! Extensions: Try making some differently shaped mugs, cups or other crockery. Personalise them with different images, fill colours and details. 16 ZigZag Education,
