Description WECM V5.0 offers a communications platform for compression, security, and persistence to drive higher wireless data throughput and lower costs. The platform supports highly encrypted access over a wide range of wireless and wireline networks. WECM V5 provides a standard TCP/IP communications interface to a variety of wireless, dial-up, and LANs with data optimization and security. The components that make up WECM are designed to run on multivendor hardware and operating system platforms. WECM has three major components: Connection Manager, the Distributed Administration, and the Mobility Client. Connection Manager Connection Manager supports a comprehensive spectrum of communication protocols for both IP and non-ip networks. Flexible connections are created by configuring multiple Mobile Network Connections (MNC) for many combinations of public or private physical networks. Each MNC can be tuned for optimal performance, compensating for latency, link speed, and other characteristics that vary across different communications technologies. Mobile Network Interfaces (MNI) and IP Addressing MNI is implemented to allow the operating system IP layer to communicate with all supported wireless, dial, or wireline networks. The platform controls one or more IP subnets of users whose traffic is routed through the appropriate MNI. In order to help reduce and control data traffic, each MNI can be customized with packet filtering or packet mapping. The built-in Network Address Translation feature helps manage scarce corporate IP addresses. HTTP/HTTPS Access Service For mobile devices with an SSL-capable browser, connectivity for both unsecured HTTP and authenticated HTTP over SSL (HTTPS) is supported. Lightweight Third Party Authentication (LTPA) token support enables single sign on through Web servers or portals. Mobile Access Services An encrypted tunnel helps secure wireless connections between the Connection Manager and the Mobility Client, which work in conjunction to help offer enhanced functionality, improved performance, and a high level of security. Applications are supported by using industry-standard socket programming interfaces provided by the operating system. This helps reduce the need for developers to learn special programming interfaces or proprietary tools and protocols. Cluster Support Gateway clustering helps enable a highly scalable architecture and distributes the load geographically across multiple sites to help adapt to the mobile needs of the customer. Support for HACMP helps obtain high reliability. Security Multiple levels of authentication and encryption are provided to help assure the identity of the mobile user, prevent unauthorized access, and protect data privacy. In addition to the mobile VPN option, SSL, Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS), and PPP protocols are incorporated. WECM V5 is certified for FIPS 140-2, 197, 46-3, 186-2, and 180-1 standards. A symmetric encryption key encodes or decodes data with varying key lengths, the strongest being the 256-bit (AES). Customers can choose from DES, Triple DES, RC5, AES, and other algorithms. Connection Manager validates users against corporate LDAP directory servers and RADIUS-compliant authentication servers. WECM V5.0 has been enhanced for two-factor authentication by tying user credentials with hardware identifiers, such as hardware serial number, modem network address, or call line identifier. Connection Manager can also verify valid X.509 client certificates, comparing the information in the certificate against a trusted certificate authority. Data Optimization Connection Manager and the Mobility Client work in tandem to help reduce data transmission costs over wireless networks by utilizing advanced data compression, byte reduction, and minimization of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) retransmissions. This helps reduce data loads, increase effective bandwidth, and can lower reconnection fees. Messaging Services Messaging services support several types of messaging modes, including SMS, e-mail using SMTP, unconfirmed WAP push, message delivery over proprietary networks such as Mobitex or Motien, and Simple Network Paging Protocol (SNPP). The Wireless Communication Transfer Protocol (WCTP) has been added to enable delivery of wireless messages to appropriate receiving devices. The WECM Messaging Services and Push Toolkit and the API for WAP V1.2. services are available to create push applications by specifying the address type. The Messaging Services are tightly integrated with WebSphere Everyplace Access Intelligent Notification Services (INS), adding another rich layer of functionality. WAP Connection Manager can be configured as a WAP proxy to provide connectivity for multivendor WAP V1.1 and WAP V1.2 client services. It fully supports the WAP WSP which links the microbrowser with cellular phones and PDAs. WECM V5 functions as a WAP Push Proxy Gateway allowing external applications to push various content down to WAP devices. WTLS helps secure the connection to the WAP client, and SSL is used to establish a highly encrypted connection to the back-end Web servers. WECM V5 without WAP Gateway For customers who do not need the WAP functionality, WECM V5 without WAP is available. It provides all of the other components and capabilities of WECM V5 but at a lower price. 203-167 -2-

Distributed Administration Administration of single or multiple Connection Managers is simplified with a Java remote console, called the Gatekeeper, and optional user administration portlets using the WebSphere Portal Server or WebSphere Everyplace Access. Multiple levels of administration delegation may be defined, each with the desired access or change permissions. This flexibility lets you create central or distributed administrators to match the IT needs of your organization. All administration and configuration data resides in a common LDAP directory. Remote Gatekeeper administration communicates in a secure manner to the Connection Manager via XML over SSL connections. Seamless Cross-network Roaming Mobile users can maintain session persistence when a mobile device changes network connections. This dynamic roaming feature supports a wide variety of network communication protocols and can enable access across physical networks without breaking the application s end-to-end TCP sessions. This helps provide mobile users with uninterrupted connectivity to critical applications. Clientless Connection The WECM V5 gateway HTTP/HTTPS capability supports an encrypted SSL connection from a user device to the WECM gateway. For example, an HTML browser may be used to make an encrypted SSL connection without requiring any additional application software on the mobile or remote device. Mobility Client The Mobility Client, formerly referred to as the Wireless Client, runs locally on mobile devices. With an authenticated network connection to the Connection Manager, you can assign a client intranet or Internet IP address. IP applications can run on a wireless network using the standard TCP/IP provided by the operating system on the mobile device. Standard IP routings are supported, even over non-ip wireless bearer networks. This helps provide unbroken, end-to-end TCP sessions between mobile devices and application servers. The Mobility Client is supported on multiple platforms and environments, including: Palm OS 3.5.x and 4.x Microsoft Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows ME Linux desktop using Red Hat 7.3 or 8.0, SuSE 7.3, 8.0, or 8.1, or UnitedLinux 1.0 Mobility Client includes a toolkit and APIs to create network-aware applications. One type of application, for example, selects the exact type of data to transmit based on the type of connectivity, costs, and bandwidth. Another application can monitor Wi-Fi signal strength, decide to start a General Packet Radio Switching (GPRS) connection and roam to GPRS before Wi-Fi connectivity is lost. Support for Standard PPP Clients WECM V5 supports a broad category of devices that can establish a PPP connection to the gateway as the Network Access Server. For this PPP client support, wireless client software is not required on the mobile device. With PPP connections, performance optimization is much less and security functionality is restricted to authentication (no encryption). With PPP connections, you will not receive the benefits of the mobility client such as data optimization. WECM V5 Updates WECM Starter Edition WECM Starter Edition provides the same functionality as the full entitlement WECM V5, including WAP, but licensing is limited to a maximum of 50 users. The Starter Edition is designed for customers who want to start using WECM on a small scale and at a lower price. When you are ready to expand your WECM environment, you may convert your license to the full entitlement version of WECM V5 or WECM V5 without WAP for a 25% discount off your normal Passport Advantage price. You may not have to reinstall software. WECM Starter Edition V5 replaces WECM Starter Edition V4.2, according to terms of the Passport Advantage Agreement. For more information about WECM Starter Edition, refer to Software Announcement 203-116, dated April 29, 2003. Product Positioning WECM V5 extends the IBM Application Framework for e-business and allows customers to extend their existing applications to the mobile portion of their workforce, over multiple wireless networks, across multiple devices and platforms, and in a highly secure, optimized manner. This can help enterprise customers, suppliers, and employees conduct business cost effectively, virtually anywhere, anytime. For customers who do not require the WAP protocol, IBM offers WECM V5 without the WAP function for a lower cost. WECM V5 can be used together with other products in the WebSphere Everyplace family to enable highly secure wireless access and e-business. WECM V5 replaces WECM V4.2, according to the terms of your Passport Advantage Agreement. Customers who are still using Everyplace Wireless Gateway, the predecessor of WECM V4.2, should contact their IBM Pervasive computing representative to discuss a transition to WECM V5. WECM Starter Edition The program code in WECM Starter Edition V4.2 is replaced by WECM V5, creating WECM Starter Edition V5. Although the functions of the WECM V5 and WECM Starter Edition V5 are the same, the WECM Starter Edition V5 has unique terms, and licensing is limited to a maximum of 50 users. Customers who purchased WECM Starter Edition V4.2 are entitled to receive WECM Starter Edition V5 for no additional charge, according to the terms of their Passport Advantage Agreement. When customers who purchase WECM Starter Edition are ready to expand their WECM environment beyond the 50-user limitation of WECM Starter Edition, they may convert to the full entitlement licensing of WECM V5 or WECM V5 without WAP for a discounted price. If they select WECM V5 with WAP, they do not have to reinstall the program software. For additional information or assistance, contact an IBM Pervasive Computing Division representative. -3-203-167

IBM US Announcement Supplemental Information June 24, 2003 Benefits Companies can extend their e-business IP networks and applications more efficiently and in a more secure manner to mobile devices over wireless and wireline networks. Companies can support multiple networks, both wired and wireless, to make it easier for users to use the network that meets their individual needs and cost objectives. Applications using industry-standard sockets programming interface are supported so developers do not need to learn special programming interfaces or proprietary tools and protocols. In effect, TCP/IP applications can run unchanged with wireless networks. This comprehensive network access solution features bidirectional user and server authentication and data encryption for security. Data compression and header reduction help enable faster response times and lower data volumes over the network. The ability to automatically disconnect from connection-oriented dial networks during idle periods and then reconnect for new data transmissions can help lower reduce connection time, thereby lowering connection fees. A virtual connection is preserved when the physical connection is dropped accidentally or intentionally. High scalability and reliability is provided by supporting gateway clustering, distribution across multiple sites, and HACMP for 24 x 7 reliability to support an on-demand environment. WECM provides its own Java user interface that enables easy setup and configuration across multiple platforms.
