2 Description WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0, Advanced Single Server Edition for iseries adds the following features to its already function-rich environment: Powerful Web Services These standards include Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) allowing e-business applications to communicate with the: UDDI business registry, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) providing a common format for transporting messages to and from a UDDI registry extensible Markup Language (XML) for flexible and interactive application communications Web Services Description Language (WSDL) providing standardized interfacing with Web services applications This support enables any Java-based application to swiftly interoperate with Web services applications due to WebSphere s extensible and open programming model and architecture. These integrated Web services extend WebSphere s leadership in Web-based distributed transactions to dynamic e-business solutions. Coupled with the upgraded XML parser based on the open source Apache Xerces product and Apache Xalan database the Web services support provides a high degree of flexibility within the foundation Web application server. An upgrade of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) client interface is also provided, for accessing directory services throughout the network. Version 4 delivers the broadest enablement of enterprise applications and assets to Web services via its unparalleled connectivity and interoperability options. Platform Support One new workstation platform is now supported: Linux (Red Hat and SuSe) Function and capabilities are consistent across all of the platforms supported. The expanded list of platforms also includes Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX/6000, HP-UX, and iseries. Rich J2EE Open Standards Implementations Full J2EE certification is only the beginning, with rich turbocharged enterprise Java implementations built-in and the full range of Java-based APIs and protocols supported. The most significant Java 2 compliance contributions in Version 4 include Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 1.1 component technology and an upgrade of the Java Developers Kit (JDK) base to JDK 1.3 across all support operating system platforms. EJB 1.1 provides more flexibility by using XML-formatted descriptor information for increased levels of connectivity and control. The Java security APIs have been improved upon as well within the distributed security model. Connectivity Unparalleled connectivity is provided by a preview implementation of Java 2 Connectivity (J2C). J2C provides a common layer of connection management with a consistent way of allowing Web applications and components to call application and resource adapters, or connectors. Based on IBM s common connector framework, J2C is expected to become the de facto open standard for managing connections to multiple, heterogeneous, enterprise systems. Interoperability Powerful interoperability between Web services and J2EE, enabling key solution offerings for collaboration, business-to-business, portal serving, content management, commerce, and pervasive computing. Open, flexible application deployment with a rich set of application execution services is integral to any WebSphere solution offering. WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0, Advanced Single Server Edition for iseries is a core element of these offerings, and in turn provides compatibility as well as interoperability with other key products. These products include Lotus Domino for e-collaboration, WebSphere Commerce Suite for e-commerce, WebSphere BtoB Integrator for business-to-business communications and Web services applications, MQSeries for reliable and asynchronous messaging, WebSphere Everyplace Suite for pervasive and mobile computing, and WebSphere Business Components, VisualAge for Java and WebSphere Studio for development. Turbo-Charged Performance and Scalability WebSphere Application Server provides extensive performance, scaling, security, and control for your advanced e-business applications. New performance tuning wizards are provided, along with improved resource and log analyzers, to help optimize your transactional Web sites. A new Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) cache is provided in Version 4 that stores name server requests on behalf of Web applications deployed in WebSphere. The result is that for applications requiring many name server calls, application speed can be increased up to two or three times. With enhancements to the connection pooling algorithms and support for dynamic reloading of EJB components, WebSphere Application Server V4.0, advanced Edition provides a highly-scalable and high-performance deployment environment. Superior Security with Dynamic, Interactive Web Application Serving For additional policy management over and above what IBM provides today with our distributed security model, WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0, Advanced Single Server Edition for iseries now provides an interface that applications can leverage to interact with the WebSEAL component of Tivoli Policy Director. This API enables a Web application running in WebSphere to call the Policy Director product for coexistence with existing user and application policies and for an added level of authorizations for your server-side execution environments. Also, the Open Servlet Engine that allows redirection of transaction requests from a Web server residing outside a firewall or within a DMZ to a WebSphere Application Server inside a firewall within an intranet environment has been enhanced for more secure connections through the firewall by this leveraging

3 Transaction Management The Enterprise JavaBeans engine, supporting the latest EJB technology, monitors and controls containers used within the server. Persistent storage for transactional EJB components includes support for DB2 /400. A key attribute of WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0, Advanced Single Server Edition for iseries is its transaction management and application execution management. With extensive logging and tracing facilities, an online transaction debugger, an application assembly tool, application migration aids, and enhancements to the administrator client, the ability to manage, control, and coordinate multiple transactions is greatly enhanced. User-Friendly with One-Touch Installation One of the most important focus areas has been ease-of-use across installation, administration, and product documentation. As a result, WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0, Advanced Single Server Edition for iseries has a comprehensive and accurate Web-based documentation center that users can take advantage of right from the start. The installation and administration procedures improved usability while still maintaining a rich and flexible set of selectable configurations and prerequisites for tailored, open, and complete solutions. A separately-installable, EJB client environment application has been added in Version 4, allowing for easier setup on a Web client machine of an EJB-compatible environment. This allows direct invocation of EJB component applications from client machines, bypassing the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) path through a Web server. The result is much faster execution, with more direct communications with EJBs and a shorter code path. JavaMail WebSphere Application Server supports JavaMail version and the JavaBeans Activation Framework (JAF) version In WebSphere Application Server, JavaMail technology is supported in all Web application components, namely: servlets, JSPs, EJBs and application clients. The JavaMail APIs model a mail system. These APIs provide a platform and protocol independent framework to build Java based, client applications. The JavaMail APIs only provide general mail facilities. To implement specific protocols such as sending, receiving, and storing mail, these APIs require service providers. Service providers for SMTP and IMAP are provided with WebSphere Application Server. A service provider for POP3 is available from Sun. Building on a Firm Foundation In summary, this new major version provides a consistent e-business application deployment environment with a rich set of application services across a comprehensive list of operating platforms and implementations of leading-edge Java technologies and APIs. 8 Deprecated Function The use of the.servlet configuration file by the WebSphere Application Server PageList Support will be deprecated. This does not mean that the PageList Support is to be deprecated, only the use of the.servlet file. Removed Function The WebSphere Application Server Connection Manager Version 2.0 APIs have been removed. Applications using this must be migrated to the new WebSphere Connection Pooling model. Support for processing JavaServer Pages (JSP) Version.91 has been removed. Support for processing JSP Version 1.0 has been removed. Due to the fact that the JSP Version 1.1 specification is built on the JSP Version 1.0 specification, all JSPs developed at the Version 1.0 level specification should be directly compatible and capable of executed on WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0.
