Description Key Prerequisites To operate in the Tivoli Management Environment, Tivoli ADSM requires Tivoli Management Framework which is licensed separately. For centralized management within the Tivoli environment, Tivoli ADSM also requires the Tivoli ADSM Plus Module, which is included with the Tivoli ADSM server license. The following Tivoli ADSM server prerequisites are platform dependent: Windows NT requires an Intel 486DX or Pentium processor running Windows NT 3.5.1 or 4.0. OS/2 requires an Intel 486DX or Pentium processor running OS/2 Warp 3.0 plus REXX, Warp Connect with REXX, or Warp Server SMP. running Windows NT 3.5.1 or 4.0. requires an IBM RS/6000 running 4.1.4, 4.1.5, 4.2.1, or 4.3.1. Sun Solaris requires a Sun4m or Sun4u workstation running Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6. HP-UX requires a Hewlett-Packard HP9000 Series 800 Business Server with HP-UX 10.20 or 11.0. requires OS/400 V4R3. Support for Multiple Clients Tivoli ADSM backs up data from clients running on: IBM Apple Macintosh Data General DG/UX Digital UNIX Hewlett-Packard HP-UX NCR UNIX SVR4 NEC EWS-UX/V Novell NetWare IBM OS/2 SCO Sequent PTX Siemens Nixdorf SINIX Reliant Silicon Graphics IRIX Sun Microsystems Solaris Windows 32-bit Intel (Windows NT and Windows 95/98) Windows 32-bit DEC Alpha (Windows NT) Enterprise Management with the Enterprise Administration Optional Feature The enterprise management functions and the Enterprise Administration optional priced feature are available on HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Windows NT, and IBM. Enterprise Administrator Console: A Java-enabled Web browser interface simplifies management by giving the administrator a global view of the Tivoli ADSM deployment. Web Backup-Archive Client: A Java-enabled Web browser interface allows administrators, end users, or other authorized people to perform backup and restore, and archive and retrieve functions on a remote workstation or LAN server. Reporting: Enterprise reporting provides the ability for the administrator to obtain information about the Tivoli ADSM enterprise as a whole. To simplify reporting needs, Tivoli ADSM provides a number of predefined server scripts (described below) that can be automatically loaded into the server database during installation. Tivoli ADSM-supplied server scripts include: List nodes that have not accessed Tivoli ADSM for a specified number of days Display nodes that have backup data exceeding a specified number of MB Display percentage of search volumes in a specified library The enterprise administrator console Web interface enables an administrator to create additional reporting scripts or views, and to execute and modify existing ones. Automation Enhancements: Enhanced automation functions are being added to eliminate or reduce staff-intensive manual procedures. Server Scripts Automation of server management operations is provided through new server scripts that store a sequence of server commands in the database as a script with an assigned name. The script can be run by the administrator from the command line and from the Tivoli ADSM enterprise console interface, or it can be scheduled for execution using the administrative command scheduler in the server. Server scripts can include Tivoli ADSM server commands, SQL statements, conditional logic (including return code checking), and variable substitution. This means that variables can be passed to be substituted for strings in the script commands to allow for flexibility and more robust function. Enhanced Policy Additional policy constructs have been added to allow the automatic extension of the server database and/or recovery log when administrator-defined thresholds are reached. Triggers can be established to drive actions when the database or recovery log reaches a specified percent capacity. These new triggers represent additional management policy used by the administrators to automate server response to space needs. The amount of space to be added can be specified in percentage of the size of the existing database or recovery log. Enterprise Administration: The new optional Enterprise Administration priced feature includes a set of enhancements that enables administrators to centrally manage multiple Tivoli ADSM servers with a single Tivoli ADSM enterprise administration console interface. The Tivoli ADSM enterprise administration console is a Web browser that serves as the integration point for all Tivoli ADSM functions. When the Enterprise Administration feature is licensed, the enterprise console provides the administrator with several global views of the Tivoli ADSM deployment and provides an interface for the following functions: Enterprise Configuration and Policy Management This function allows Tivoli ADSM configuration and policy information to be defined one time at a Tivoli ADSM configuration server and then propagated to any number of managed Tivoli ADSM servers. A new server option is used to define a Tivoli ADSM as a configuration server. You have the flexibility to select 299-040 -2-

an existing Tivoli ADSM server or implement an additional server as a dedicated configuration server. Tivoli ADSM servers that obtain information from a configuration server are known as managed Tivoli ADSM servers. Policy and configuration information that can be centrally defined includes: client option sets, backup, archive, and HSM policies, client and administration schedules, server scripts, and administration definitions. Policy and configuration information is grouped into one or more named configuration profiles to which managed servers subscribe. Configuration profiles enable you to decide which sets of information are to be administered centrally, and which are to be defined locally. Enterprise Command Routing The enterprise command routing function lets a Tivoli ADSM administrator use a single command to perform such tasks as queries on groups of networked Tivoli ADSM servers as well as a single server. Results from the routed commands are returned to the origin of the request. A message is also returned indicating whether the commands were successful, or whether some or all of them failed. Command routing in Tivoli ADSM provides a simple mechanism for querying and updating multiple servers simultaneously. This can greatly simplify reporting across a large Tivoli ADSM enterprise. Enterprise Logging The enterprise logging function extends the capabilities provided in Centralized Event Logging and enables more proactive management of, and better enterprise reporting on, a dynamic environment by consolidating events from groups of Tivoli ADSM servers and clients. The Tivoli ADSM servers in an organization can forward their events and those of their clients to a single server designated to be the event server. This server then displays the events on the Tivoli ADSM enterprise console and stores them in the activity log. The events can also be routed to external managers such as NetView and the Tivoli Management products as described under the Centralized Event Logging description, below. Control Management As systems grow, and more Tivoli ADSM servers are deployed to support data availability requirements, it becomes critical to administer and operate these systems in a network-centric manner. Centralized Event Logging: Centralized logging of operational information allows Tivoli ADSM client and server events to be made available from a central point. These events are made available in the Tivoli ADSM database via Query commands or the SQL interface. Additionally, these events can be sent to the Tivoli Enterprise Console, and via industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) traps to any SNMP manager, such as Tivoli NetView. The granularity of logging can be customized for selected clients. Client Options Stored at Server: Tivoli ADSM (3.1) allows most client options to be stored at the server, providing additional administrator control for setting options and relieving clients of this operational requirement. Client options can be grouped into sets that can be shared between multiple clients to avoid replication. Tivoli ADSM Server-to-Server Communication: For enterprises deploying multiple Tivoli ADSM servers, the optional Server-to-Server Communication feature allows Tivoli ADSM to pass data between servers, whether across the room or across the country. This function allows movement of information between storage pools on multiple Tivoli ADSM servers. The ability to define a storage hierarchy across multiple servers may help reduce overall storage costs by sharing key system resources such as robotic tape libraries and drives. The Server-to-Server virtual volumes function is also ideal for electronic vaulting of database and storage pool backups to a secondary site for disaster recovery. The optional Disaster Recovery Manager feature now supports automated disaster recovery using the Server-to-Server Communication function. The Server-to-Server and Disaster Recovery priced optional features are available for HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Windows NT, IBM, and IBM servers. SQL Interface: Tivoli ADSM (3.1) supports SQL queries on the Tivoli ADSM administrative command line interface and Web browser interfaces and provides an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface on selected platforms to access and report on Tivoli ADSM database and real-time Tivoli ADSM server information. ODBC is supported by off-the-shelf spreadsheets, databases, and other tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Lotus 1-2-3, and Lotus Approach. This allows you to build queries that satisfy your business requirements, import data into the tools of your choice, and format to suit your specific needs. The ODBC interface is packaged with the Windows 32-bit (Intel) client. Performance Due to the increase in around-the-clock operations, and the high growth in the amount of data, backup and restore throughput has become a vital concern. In addition, it is necessary to deal with the increasing performance requirements resulting from the growing number and size of files and filesystems. Tivoli ADSM is addressing this growth by implementing new data transfer mechanisms and storage models for substantial performance improvements over the existing ADSM product. Small File Aggregation: To help improve backup and archive performance for small files, Tivoli ADSM (3.1) will group multiple small files together as a single object on the server. This grouping results in fewer data pointers and less database and storage pool entries. This enhancement also helps improve database expiration performance, as well as performance for storage pool backup and migration, since there are fewer objects to move and manage. This enhanced function is transparent to the end user, and does not prevent individual retrieval of files that have been aggregated. Shared Memory Protocol: When the client and the server for, HP-UX, and Sun Solaris are on the same workstation, use of the Shared Memory Protocol may produce higher throughput performance. Restore Directory Trees: A new algorithm has been added for the restore function that enhances the restore operation and consumes less client memory resources. Fault-Tolerant Clients: New fault-tolerant features provide intelligent resumption of interrupted file system restores. Users are informed when retries are occurring, and are able to stop the retries, if desired. Usability Enhancements An improved user interface is designed to make users and administrators feel more at ease in an increasingly complex environment. The new Tivoli ADSM (3.1) -3-299-040

interface masks complexity and enables faster navigation and movement through the screens. Redesigned Initial Panels: The initial client GUI panel provides an easy, intuitive way of selecting the primary functions of Tivoli ADSM. Redesigned Primary Windows: The main backup, archive, restore, and retrieve panels have been redesigned to allow more flexibility in making choices such as setting options and selecting files and drives. Enhanced Directory Selection Techniques: New selection techniques have been added to allow an entire directory tree to be easily selected, so that an operation can be performed on all of the directory contents. Collapsible Directory Trees: To eliminate excessive scrolling through a directory, collapsible directory trees are supported. New Progress Indicators: Progress indicators provide up-to-date status, including projected function execution time, file scanning progress, and server connection. Point-in-Time Restore: Point-in-time restore allows a file system to be restored to a previous point in time. During a point-in-time restore, the latest backup file copy created prior to or equal to the specified point in time is restored. Backup file copies for a file deleted prior to the point-in-time restore date are not restored. Single Drive Libraries: Tivoli ADSM (3.1) automates tape reclamation of single-drive libraries. This feature may help to produce significant labor savings as well as reduce media costs. Web Browser Interface: Tivoli ADSM (3.1) provides a Web browser interface that allows any platform with a supported Web browser to serve as a Tivoli ADSM administrative interface. Incremental Backups: Tivoli ADSM (3.1) now allows you to select a set of files and directories to be backed up incrementally in addition to the incremental backup of an entire file system. Client Passwordaccess=Generate: The Passwordaccess=Generate option is now available for all backup-archive and API clients. An encrypted password is stored on each workstation for use during session initiation. If the password expires, a new password will be automatically generated (hence the name). Tivoli ADSM for Windows NT Configuration and Installation Enhancements Special emphasis has been placed by Tivoli ADSM for NT on the following functions: Auto-changer configuration wizard hides the details of Tivoli ADSM device configuration from the user by automatically detecting all tape devices, both drives and automated libraries, attached to an NT server and defining selected devices to Tivoli ADSM based on device type and existing Tivoli ADSM definitions. Comprehensive error checking and drag and drop support enhance ease of use and make device configuration simple and intuitive. Improved installation features simplify the configuration process by allowing the user to select Tivoli ADSM components to be installed, thereby minimizing the Tivoli ADSM footprint, configuring Tivoli ADSM NT services based on user-specified options during installation, and supporting silent install. Performance tuning wizard optimizes Tivoli ADSM performance by examining system metrics like disk drive speed, processor speed, and memory availability in order to determine optimal configuration settings like volume placement. Initial configuration wizard provides a task-oriented, cookbook approach to Tivoli ADSM system configuration by presenting the set of tasks appropriate for the environment being configured (production single server, production network server, or try/buy) and executing each in sequence. The wizard checks each task s dependencies before beginning task execution, describes each task pre-execution, includes full help (for example, tips and warnings) in context, provides consistent behavior across all tasks, and provides default values, where appropriate, to make configuration simple, intuitive, and less error-prone. The following configuration tasks are included in the configuration wizard: License registration: issues the register license commands for the license options purchased (and selected) by the user Device configuration: defines devices detected automatically by Tivoli ADSM, both manual tape drives and automated tape libraries, to the Tivoli ADSM system Node registration: registers users to Tivoli ADSM Policy definition: allows the definition of new policies, and provides a set of canned policies to be selected or used as templates for new policies defined Schedule definition: allows the definition of new schedules, and provides a set of canned schedules to be selected or used as templates for new schedules defined Performance optimization: attempts to optimize Tivoli ADSM performance by determining optimal settings and then making the recommended changes Volume allocation and configuration Service configuration Event logging configuration: presents events that are available for monitoring and event receivers available for catching, and allows selected events to be directed to selected event receivers, and allows selected event log options to be enabled or disabled Network client configuration: enables remote client configuration by detecting various pieces of configuration information, like protocol variables, and writing them out to a configuration response file residing in a shared directory Media labeling and check-in: allows labeling and check-in of tapes, both manual tape devices and automated tape libraries, providing the ability to (1) label a set of tapes at one time (all labels are specified by the user upfront, and the wizard then executes the appropriate labeling commands), and (2) execute on demand media check-in Initial verification test: tests the fully configured Tivoli ADSM system 299-040 -4-

4.0 clustering (failover only) supports the Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) 2-node failover by restarting Tivoli ADSM and continuing in-progress tasks automatically at detection of node failover. Online HTML help for both Tivoli ADSM server and client replaces the native WinHelp facility with HTML help, per Microsoft direction, helping to increase the ease of use, enhancing the windows look and feel, and improving the searching capability of Tivoli ADSM/NT online help. Other Server Enhancements Changes to the server options can be made online via administrative commands. In most cases, this will not require a restart of the Tivoli ADSM server to activate the changes. The performance of many server operations is improved with enhancements to database read-ahead (pre-fetch rows), path length reduction, and database index organization for expiration processing. Automated library overflow management that provides the ability to keep track of mountable Tivoli ADSM tapes that are both inside and outside of an automated tape library in a Tivoli ADSM storage pool. Disaster Recovery Manager (DRM) has been enhanced to automate the tracking, viewing, and retrieval of the DRP file created by the DRM Prepare function. The DRP file can now be sent automatically to another server for safekeeping. The contents of the DRPs are viewable through new commands and can easily and quickly be restored to a server in the event of a disaster. These enhancements are being made in the DRM licensed feature. The Server-to-Server and Disaster Recovery priced optional features are available for HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Windows NT, IBM, and IBM servers. Storage pool migration has been enhanced to support Migration by Age. System administrators may now specify, through new storage pool parameters, the minimum number of days that data is to remain in a storage pool before it is migrated. This allows another level of control, in addition to migration by threshold, for the movement of data within a Tivoli ADSM storage hierarchy. Other Client Enhancements An administrative GUI on the Windows 32-bit (Intel) client that supports the Tivoli ADSM (3.1) functions. The Options file that contains configuration and initial state of the Tivoli ADSM clients can be changed from within the client GUI. The number of files and the amount of data selected for restore will be presented to the user prior to the start of the restore operation. When files are restored to an alternate location, directory structure is preserved. Empty directories may be backed up when needed. HSM (Space Management) support is added for the Silicon Graphics IRIX (for XFS file system only) and the Sun Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.6 (for Veritas File System only) clients, using the Systems Management: Data Storage Management API (XDSM API) standard, which has been established by the Open Group (X/Open OSF). DRM Stand-alone Disk Image Dump and Restore provides simplified system recovery from hard drive failure for most Intel-based workstations. Stand-alone Disk Image Dump and Restore is a new capability of the optional, priced DRM feature. Disk images are stored as objects in a Tivoli ADSM V3.1 server by using diskettes which contain an embedded OS/2 V4 Warp Client operating system, TCP/IP communications, and Tivoli ADSM V3 client Application Program Interface (API). DRM Stand-alone Disk Image Dump and Restore is an operating system independent hard drive recovery solution for a wide variety of personal computers that are capable of using OS/2 V4 Warp Client as an embedded operating system; OS/2 does not have to be installed on the personal computer being dumped or restored. The HP-UX and Sun Solaris clients support backup and archive functions for Veritas File Systems. Database and Application Support Tivoli ADSM provides online backup and restore of many industry-leading databases via the ADSMConnect Agents and third-party vendor products. The ADSMConnect agents offer database aware backups that take advantage of Tivoli ADSM functions, including data storage on a variety of storage devices, central scheduling, and policy-managed backup facilities. ADSMConnect Agents are available for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange, and Lotus Notes. ADSM for OS/2 The ADSM for OS/2 shipped in Tivoli ADSM is at a level equivalent to that shipped in IBM ADSM for OS/2 Version 2.1. The function on this platform has stabilized and does not include the previously described functions. For more information about the features of ADSM for OS/2, refer to Software Announcement 296-343, dated September 10, 1996. ADSM for OS/2 requires a PTF for Year 2000 readiness.
