Highlights and Notes evantage provides you with the ability to manage and customise your notes and highlights, including the ability to share them with other users. This can be managed on any of the platforms and will be synced across them all when you have an active internet connection. Highlighting in an ebook is similar to highlighting in a physical book. Your ebook however allows you to add or remove your highlights and add your own notes. Any highlights or notes you create will be saved online to allow you to continue your work from another workstation. Creating a New Highlight and/or Note In evantage, to make a note and/or highlight, use your mouse to select the text. The following menu will appear: Selecting the correct highlighter colour to use will then apply the highlight. Clicking in the Add Note box will allow you to enter your text. Notes entered are saved automatically as you type. To exit the note click elsewhere on the page and the note is saved and closed. A small note icon will then appear on the side of the page to indicate there is a note associated to the text. The notes can also be seen in the notebook panel accessed by the left hand menu. evantage User Guide 13

If you have made any notes or highlights in your ebook you will see an icon on the thumbnail image indicating this. Hovering over the icon will indicate the number of notes/highlights Selecting the three dots image will also provide this information on the reverse thumbnail Editing a Highlight or Note To edit/delete an existing highlight or note in evantage, or to change the colour of the highlighter, click on the highlight that has the note attached to it to open the sub-menu. Sharing and Subscribing to Highlights and Notes One of evantage s most innovative features is the ability to collaborate highlights and notes with your peers. In order for sharing and subscribing to function, both you and the person you are sharing with must have both purchased a license for the same book. Collaboration Tips The collaboration aspect within evantage allows you to interact with others during your learning experience. Here are some key points on how to manage your highlighters: Ensure that highlighter names properly reflect their purpose, such as Research Further, Important, or Need Clarification. Do not use similar colours for your highlighters to ensure that each highlight can be easily identified. Identify two sharing groups: public highlighters or private highlighters only. You may want to restrict a specific highlighter to members of a specific group while sharing another one with everyone. Subscribing to Someone s Notes and Highlights Within the Mobile app, select Sharing in the main menu. To subscribe to someone s notes and highlights enter their email address into the email field and select add. You will then have access to any public notes and highlights from that individual in any titles that you both have access to. evantage User Guide 34

Sharing Your Notes and Highlights Sharing is the reciprocal feature of subscribing. With sharing, you determine who may see your notes and highlights. If you select Public, your highlights and notes in this category will be shared with anyone who knows your Bookshelf username. If you select Friends, the highlights and notes in this category will be shared with the friends whose Bookshelf usernames you ve entered in your Friends list. Be aware that any highlighter shared with friends will be shared with ALL friends in the approved list. Within Bookshelf Mobile, you manage your friends list in the same menu as subscribing to someone else s highlights. When you have selected Sharing select the Friends tab. Add friends by entering their name and email address and then tapping Add. You will also need to choose the highlighter you would like to share and then set the level of access in the Manage highlighters menu. You can edit your friends list by selecting Manage my friends when selecting the privacy settings. evantage User Guide 35

Appendix E FAQ Is Linux supported? There is no standalone app for Linux, but Bookshelf can be accessed via a Web Browser. I should be able to print X pages, but I can only print less than that If your copy restrictions are less than your print restrictions (ex. 5 page copy restriction, 10 page print restriction), Bookshelf Online will enforce the most restrictive setting. The enforcement of this policy is due to the fact that Bookshelf online spools up a print job, which means it is pulling all of the text from the Vital Source Server and opening up a new tab/window, displaying that text for the user to print. Since technically it is acting as a print and copy window, the most restrictive setting is applied. Please note that this does not apply to Bookshelf Desktop. ebook is only showing blank pages (or black or grey) This problem is usually linked to the graphics card. To resolve this please upgrade your video card driver to ensure it supports Direct X 10. More information can be found at: https://support.vitalsource.com/hc/en-us/articles/201967663-windows- Black-Gray-content-shown-instead-of-text Can Bookshelf be downloaded to Windows RT? Windows RT is not a supported Operating System. Windows RT is only used by Surface RT based tablets (the Surface Pro uses Windows 8). Windows RT has too many limitations to support the native client, and is incompatible with software designed for any other version of Windows. Bookshelf does fully support Bookshelf Online through the Internet Explorer browser that is bundled with Windows RT. Is it possible to view two books at once? Within the Desktop Bookshelf application, you are able to open multiple ebooks and arrange them on your desktop. Viewing multiple documents at once is not supported in the online Bookshelf application. Error message received when trying to print through Bookshelf online 'To keep access to evantage open and fast for all users, we must limit the number of pages you view during a short time period. When you are trying to print as many pages as possible, Bookshelf Online queues up the pages in a new window. If you close that window immediately and start trying to navigate the book again it will trigger the error message, essentially saying that no more than 90 pages can be accessed in 90 seconds. If you wait 90 seconds or more this will not happen. This error message is not stopping you from printing. If you wait approximately 60 seconds you will be able to begin navigating and printing again.
