WORKING WITH YOUR PORTFOLIO THE INFORMATION INCLUDED HERE COVERS HOW TO CREATE YOUR PORTFOLIO FOLDER, HOW TO LINK DOCUMENTS TO YOUR TABLE OF CONTENTS, AND HOW TO SAVE / SEND YOUR PORTFOLIO TO YOUR PROFESSOR
CREATING YOUR PORTFOLIO FOLDER You will need to create a new folder on your desktop. Right click on your computer desktop. Select NEW and then FOLDER IMPORTANT!! Name your portfolio as follows: Lastname_firstname_portfolio (you must use underscores no spaces are allowed in the file name!) Example filename: (if your name were John Smith, you would name your portfolio file as follows) Smith_John_portfolio
SAVING ARTIFACTS TO YOUR FOLDER All of your artifacts for your portfolio must be saved in this folder! Find the items you want to save to your portfolio. IMPORTANT!! You may have to rename your files! There cannot be any spaces in the file name or your hyperlinks may not work!! To save an item to your portfolio: Click FILE and choose SAVE AS Use BROWSE to find your portfolio folder on the desktop Double click on your portfolio folder so that it opens Click SAVE
YOUR PORTFOLIO TABLE OF CONTENTS This is an example of a Table of Contents for your portfolio. Hyperlinks within this document allow for easy navigation of your artifacts in the portfolio. If you have a Table of Contents, save it to your portfolio folder! (remember to name it so there are no spaces in the file name!)
HYPERLINKS IN THE TABLE OF CONTENTS Hyperlinks are the maps that tell the Word program where to go to get your other documents. You want to link items in your Table of Contents to the documents that go with them! Choose an item in your Table of Contents page. Highlight it and do the following: Click the INSERT TAB then click HYPERLINK. In the Link-to column on the left, click Existing File or Web Page. Find the document you want to link to and click it. Click OK.

TESTING YOUR HYPERLINKS To test a hyperlink in Word, you will have to press the Ctrl key while you click the hyperlink. The document you linked to your Table of Contents should open. If your hyperlinks do not seem to be working, try the following: Check that the document you are linking to is in your portfolio folder (your Table of Can t find the problem? Ask A Librarian! Contents must be in the portfolio folder as well!) Make sure the file name and the hyperlink name correspond Check for spaces in your file names (spaces in the file name can break a hyperlink) Is your folder zipped? You must unzip the folder to make it work correctly To do this, right click on the zipped file and choose extract. A duplicate, unzipped folder will appear in the same directory as the zipped folder (i.e. if the zipped folder is on the desktop, the unzipped folder will also appear on the desktop).
ZIPPING YOUR PORTFOLIO Whether you need to zip your portfolio folder or not depends on how your professor wants it delivered If you are going to e-mail your portfolio or upload it to VCamp, you will need to zip the folder. If you are going to deliver your portfolio on a flash drive, you do not need to zip the folder, but make sure all your documents and your Table of Contents are in your portfolio folder. Before zipping or handing in your portfolio, make sure all your hyperlinks work! To zip your portfolio: Right click on your portfolio folder Select SEND TO from the menu Choose COMPRESSED (ZIPPED) FOLDER Wait. The zipped version of your portfolio folder will appear in the same directory as your original folder. It will also have the same name as your original folder, but with the.zip extension.
