Symbols and Conventions Symbols and Conventions ReadMe documents use the following symbols and conventions: Symbol or Convention n c w Meaning or Action A note provides important related information, reminders, recommendations, and strong suggestions. A caution means that a specific action you take could cause harm to your computer or cause you to lose data. A warning describes an action that could cause you physical harm. Follow the guidelines in this document or on the unit itself when handling electrical equipment. > This symbol indicates menu commands (and subcommands) in the order you select them. For example, File > Import means to open the File menu and then select the Import command. t Italic font Courier Bold font Ctrl+key or mouse action This symbol indicates a single-step procedure. Multiple arrows in a list indicate that you perform one of the actions listed. Italic font is used to emphasize certain words and to indicate variables. Courier Bold font identifies text that you type. Press and hold the first key while you press the last key or perform the mouse action. For example, Ctrl+drag. Compatibility with Prior Versions The Interplay Engine or Interplay Archive Engine and the Interplay Access client must be updated at same time. Interplay Access 1.0 clients will not work with older (beta) Interplay Access Engines or Archive Engines and vice-versa. Documentation Changes The following documentation changes were made after the Avid Interplay Access User s Guide and the Avid Interplay Engine and Avid Interplay Access Administration Guide were printed. Media status icon changes: The nearonline status icon is a yellow circle, as opposed to a brown circle. 3

The delete matrices have been updated. The Audio File Format field in the Editor Database Settings is now permanently set to PCM. Installation Changes for 1.0.1 Server Installer During server installation in Typical mode, you will be asked for server execution user details for a fresh installation, and also if the installation is an upgrade and the old server execution user name is "AVID_WORKGROUP_USER. Cluster Mode Server Installation Limitation When upgrading a cluster from Interplay 1.0.0 to 1.0.1, while updating the online node you will get the error " S:\Workgroup_Data\TCPCOMBridge\HTTPDComConfig.xml could not be opened. Selecting OK terminates the installation. Workaround: 1. Before upgrading the online cluster node, copy the file S:\Workgroup_Data\TCPCOMBridge\ServerXML.xml to S:\Workgroup_Data\TCPCOMBridge\HTTPDComConfig.xml. 2. Start the upgrade installation for the online node. Limitations General Limitations Limited number of clients per user per machine: Only one Interplay Access instance and one Interplay Administrator instance can run at a time on one machine per user. This software will not support terminalserver sessions. Limit Avid Interplay hostname to 15 characters: If the hostname has more than 15 characters, Interplay Access or Interplay Administrator is unable to connect to the server. Windows Power User: In an Avid Interplay environment, with Media Indexer installed, a user logged in as a Windows Power User cannot share media that was created by a Windows Administrator. If the Power User tries to check out or play media, an exception error message is displayed. Workaround: All editors must be Windows Administrators. 4

Limitations Avid Interplay Access and Avid Interplay Engine might be referred to as Asset Manager in some documentation. Avid Interplay Access Limitations When you start Interplay Access for the first time and click the Help menu, no options appear in the menu. Workaround: Exit the application and restart it. Help options now appear in the Help menu. Limited number of clients per user per machine: Only one Interplay Access instance and one Interplay Administrator instance can run at a time on one machine per user. This software will not support terminal server sessions. Preview does not get updated upon file extension change: The preview server has no means of picking up changes to a file extension, for example when a file is renamed from.mp3 to.png. Therefore it still returns the icon or preview image for the.mp3 after a rename instead of trying to generate a preview for the image. Muliselection drag and drop issue when one file asset already exists in target folder: When a multiselection is dragged and dropped and one of the file assets exists in the target folder already, no files are moved and the results are not as the user would expect. This is the result of a rollback of the transaction and appears as follows: Red check marks (indicating a check out) turn blue. The checkout path has already been moved to the new location, so when the file is moved back to the original location but the checkout path is not updated again, the check mark appears blue. These items can be checked in again safely. The local copies of not checked out assets seem to be deleted. The local copy of the asset is not actually deleted, it is just not moved back to the original location. The file that exists in the target keeps its local copy. Working in a folder during an import causes problems: When performing a large import, working in the same folder you are importing to might cause problems with the import. You might be prompted to refresh your view, in which case the import was successful. In other cases, a message indicates that the import failed and you need to perform the import again, without touching the folder. Get latest on extremely large folder causes problems for user Administrator: When the user Administrator performs a Get Latest on a folder that contains assets in number approaching 50,000, a potential problem might occur; the client slows down, but the operation actually continues. If the client reaches the free memory limit, a corresponding message is shown and the operation is cancelled. This does not occur if another user (not Administrator) has performed a Get Latest on the same machine already. 5

Workaround: Users should perform a Get Latest on the smallest range of items possible, such as a subfolder. Internally used file name appears for Avid Assets renamed to blank name: If a blank name or only spaces is entered in the Rename dialog for an Avid asset, the internally used file name (mob id) appears as the name instead (long string of numbers and letters). Tree state only remembered on the same machine: The tree state upon logout is remembered the next time you log onto Interplay only on the same machine (stored per user, per machine). Reservation icons appear falsely: The rendering of icons that shows if an asset or folder is reserved might be incorrect. If a reservation is set on a folder, the red dot often lingers long after the reservation expires. Refresh/restart of client doesn't help. Delete and move operations, however, correctly honors (or in this case doesn't honor) reservations. Explicitly calling up the dialog that lists the individual reservations on an asset displays the correct result, however. When the clip duration time is greater than 00:00:59:xx, sorting by Duration in the Table View is incorrect. In this case, the field is sorted by text and not by numbers. Drag and drop to top of a large tree not possible: If the target folder is not visible in the top of the tree, a drag & drop operation from the bottom is not possible. Searching for numbers generates too many results: Searching for numbers (such as 111 as part of a tape number) might generate many results which do not appear to relate to the number at all. These results appear when the number is part of the internally used identifier. Workaround: Limit search results as much as possible by using specific fields such as Tape in the Extended Search. Too many results creates low memory condition: When browsing a folder with more than 5,000 assets or running a search that returns more than 5,000 assets, a low memory or out of memory condition might occur. A High Result Count dialog box has been implemented in version 1.0.1 to avoid this issue. It provides the following options: Continue: Continuing the operation will show all results but may create a low memory condition. Stop: Stopping the search will display only the first 5,000 results. 6

Limitations The number of search resultsto display is configurable in the configuration.xml file which must be created in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Avid\Workgroup. The key is: <binding name="net.nxn.gui.model.nodeattributetablemodel.resultslimit"> <int>5000</int></binding> The default value is 5000. Workaround: For searches, limit search results as much as possible by searching in specific folders or using specific fields in the Extended Search. For browsing, avoid keeping too many assets in any one folder. If you drag master clips from one folder to another in Interplay Access, then log on to Interplay Access from a different system, it might take several minutes for the clips to appear in the proper folder. Issues with preview of large text files: Text files over 1MB are not shown in the Preview by default, however, if you explicitly click the Show File button for these large files, problems may occur. Avid Interplay Administration Limitations Consistency Checker reports non-problematic error with database: The following error message might appear after a consistency check: [ERROR] object is not flagged as target of a share but defines the properties for a target, flags will be set LinkTarget> BIH : 0x4003aad0 BDH : 0x00038c80 Name : 060a2b340101010101010f0013-000000-00082609a8fe03cf-060e2b347f7f-2a80 Path : <NONE> Comment : <NO COMMENT> Share : false This message is not critical and does not indicate a problem with the database. Low disk space issues: In low-disk-space situations, the Administrator cannot log on and shut down the server, and move databases by normal means. There are tools provided to solve such problems (available in the Installation CD s Tools directory or installed by default in the Server installation directory): 7

NxNServerLock.exe NxNServerUnlock.exe NxNServerShutdown.exe To move databases under low disk space conditions: 1. Lock the server using NxNServerLock.exe 2. Shut down the server using NxNServerShutdown.exe, if necessary 3. Move the databases to another drive or free up some disk space 4. Unlock the server by doing one of the following: t Use the Interplay Administrator s Lock Server view (see the Avid Interplay Engine and Avid Interplay Access Administration Guide for details) t Use NxNServerUnlock.exe 5. Deactivate any moved databases using the Interplay Administrator s Manage Databases view (see the Avid Interplay Engine and Avid Interplay Access Administration Guide for details) 6. Activate any moved databases in the correct location using the Interplay Administrator s Manage Databases view (see the Avid Interplay Engine and Avid Interplay Access Administration Guide for details) Password should only include ASCII character set: User passwords should only include the ASCII character set. Multibyte passwords might cause logon problems. Workaround: If logon with a multibyte password fails, the administrator should reset the password in the User Management view of Avid Interplay Administrator. Adding custom metadata field causes UnsupportedOperationException: Adding the first custom metadata field in the Property Layout view of the Interplay Administrator may cause an exception. Workaround: Set the first custom metadata using an Interplay editing application. Browse for new data location does not show mounted workspaces on Avid ISIS in the tree: In the Create Database view in the Interplay Administrator, when you click Browse in the New Data Location (Assets) section, the mounted workspaces on a Avid Unity ISIS shared storage might not be shown. Workaround: Type the path manually. Voice over target workspace field says No Items to Show : An administrator logged in to the Avid Interplay Administrator may see There are no items to show in the Editor Database Settings view in the field Voice over target workspace field instead of the drives. 8

Limitations This is intended behavior: the administrator must also be a Avid Unity user with the same credentials in order to see the workspaces of the Avid Unity. If the workspaces are not visible, check that: The user is a user on the Avid Unity. The user has the same password as the user on the Avid Unity. The Avid Unity is reachable. The user is allowed to see the workspaces. There are actually workspaces at all. 9
