Zinio for Libraries Western Plains Library System Kindle Fire and Fire HD Usage Instructions Download popular magazines the day the publisher releases Works on PC, Mac, iphone, ipad, Kindle Fire, and most Android Devices Free for library card holders Welcome to Western Plains Library System s new magazine download platform, Zinio for Libraries. You may already have heard of Zinio, a popular app that allows customer to subscribe to magazines through PCs, tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices. Zinio for Libraries allows Western Plains Library System cardholders to freely download current issues of select popular magazines the day the publisher releases them. 1

Part One: Getting Started Where do I find Zinio for Libraries? Zinio for Libraries can be accessed through Western Plains Library System s website, www.wplibs.com using your web browser. What do I do first? You don t have to create a Zinio for Libraries account to browse Western Plains magazines, but you must create one in order to complete a download. We therefore recommend completing this step first. In the upper right corner of the screen you should see the options to Login or Create New Account. Select Create New Account. Next, enter your library card number from the back of your Western Plains library card. A pop-up form will appear asking you to fill in a few fields of information. You must have an email address to use Zinio for Libraries. Be sure to write down the email you use to register and your password. You will use these in the future to log on. When finished tap on Create Account. How can I tell if I am logged in? The upper right screen will display your name. To log out, select the drop down arrow and tap Log out. 2

Part Two: Checking Out What can I download? Western Plains subscribes to about 30 monthly or weekly digital magazines, and Zinio for Libraries provides some titles for free. Typically, you can choose from 40 magazine titles. Each titles also includes a limited number of back issues that you can download. How do I select and download a magazine? When you have found a title that interests you tap on it. So if you want to download an issue of Newsweek, tap on the magazine cover. The web browser will direct you to a page listing recent issues. Tap on the issue you wish to download. To view a listing of older back issues, tap on the Show more back issues button. 3

When you are ready to checkout an issue tap the Checkout button beside the cover. If you select the optional box beside the Checkout button, Zinio for Libraries will email you when future issues become available. A Confirmation pop-up will appear. You may keep browsing or start reading your magazine. Part Three: Reading My Magazines How will I read a title when I checkout? To read your checked out magazines on a Kindle Fire or Fire HD you must first download the Zinio for Libraries app. Unfortunately this app is not available through the Kindle App Store, but you can still download it indirectly. First you must enable your Kindle Fire to download third party apps. From the home screen of your device, put your finger on the top of the screen and swipe down to see the Settings option. Press: Settings > Applications > Apps from Unknown Sources (allow installation of applications that are not from Appstore) > select ON. Secondly, please visit our website at www.wplibs.com and select our Zinio Help to download the app. Launch the app from your device once it has completed downloading. 4

Once you have successfully downloaded the app, locate the Settings button in order to sign in. Tap Sign In to enter your Zinio for Libraries credentials. Enter the credentials for your account Once you have entered your credentials use the back button of your device to return to the main page of the app. Tap the magazine icon at the top of the screen. You can now access all of the magazines you have borrowed from Western Plains. By tapping the settings button you can browse your magazines by Date or Title. 5

Tap on the magazine you wish to read. Be patient while the app downloads the magazine to your device. This will allow you to read offline later. To begin reading your magazine simply swipe the screen left or right to turn pages. You can view one page at a time by holding your device upright, or two pages at a time by holding it sideways. Upright Sideways When you tap the center area of the screen thumbnails of the magazine s pages will appear below. You can browse these and turn to any page by tapping on it. The following icon will allow you to bookmark pages for future reference. While reading a magazine, tapping the settings button will allow you three options. 1. Overview: Opens a thumbnail view of the pages of the magazine. 2. Table of Contents: Takes you to the magazine s table of contents page. 3. Bookmarks: Displays pages you have bookmarked. 6
