Document Introduction This document describes how to install and upgrade the Metasys Database Manager. Summary of Changes The following information is new or revised: Modified Metasys Database Manager Workflow. Updated installation screen captures in Table 1. Metasys Database Manager Overview The Metasys Database Manager helps you manage and monitor Metasys databases on an Application and Data Server (ADS), an Extended Application and Data Server (ADX), or an Open Data Server (ODS). In this document, ADS/ADX includes the ADS-Lite, unless noted otherwise. Once the Metasys Database Manager is installed, an icon ( ) appears in the task bar. This icon changes color depending on the status of your databases and allows you to access the database management and monitoring capabilities of the software. The Metasys Database Manager works with all supported versions of Microsoft SQL Server software and manages Metasys and Advanced Reporting System databases. You can use the Metasys Database Manager in conjunction with or as a substitute for SQL Server software native database tools to manage Metasys system databases. Note: We do not offer instructions for how to use SQL Server software native database tools to manage Metasys system databases. For those instructions, contact your IT department. See Metasys Database Manager Workflow for information on when to install Metasys Database Manager software. Metasys Database Manager Workflow Note the following considerations related to installation: Before you install the Metasys Database Manager, make sure that SQL Server software is installed. For a new installation of Release 9.0 ADS/ADX or ODS software, install the Metasys Database Manager after you install the ADS/ADX or ODS software. For an upgrade installation of Release 9.0 ADS/ADX or ODS software on the same computer using the same SQL Server software: 1. Back up the historical databases for the older release of ADS/ADX or ODS software. 2. Uninstall the Metasys Database Manager. 3. If you have ADS/ADX or ODS software at Release 8.0 or later, go to the next step. If you have ADS/ADX or ODS software at Release 7.0 or earlier, uninstall the older ADS/ADX or ODS software. 4. Upgrade the ADS/ADX or ODS software to Release 9.0. 5. Upgrade the Metasys Database Manager to Release 9.0. For an out-of-place upgrade installation of Release 9.0 ADS/ADX or ODS software: 1. Back up the historical databases for the older release of ADS/ADX or ODS software. 2. Move the historical and security databases from the old computer to the new computer. 3. Install Release 9.0 of the Metasys Database Manager to the new computer. 4. Restore the historical databases to the new computer using the Metasys Database Manager. 5. Install the Release 9.0 ADS/ADX or ODS software on the new computer. Refer to the Metasys Server Installation and Upgrade Instructions Wizard (LIT-12012162), the Metasys Server Lite Installation and Upgrade Instructions Wizard (LIT-12012258), or the ODS Installation and Upgrade Instructions Wizard (LIT-12011945) for more information on how to use the Metasys Database Manager for your specific upgrade scenario. For split ADX configurations, install the Metasys Database Manager on the database server computer. 2

Troubleshooting Errors during the installation process write to the MDMInstallLog.htm log file in this location: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local Note: <username> represents the name of the installing user. Table 2: Metasys Database Manager Installation Troubleshooting Problem Solution You are performing an upgrade and are unsure of when to install the Metasys Database Manager. Release 5.2 and later contain database changes that are applied after historical databases are restored. If you have existing databases and are installing the Release 5.2 or later ADS/ADX or ODS, see Metasys Database Manager Workflow in this document. Refer to the Metasys Server Installation and Upgrade Instructions Wizard (LIT-12012162), the Metasys Server Lite Installation and Upgrade Instructions Wizard (LIT-12012258), or the ODS Installation and Upgrade Instructions Wizard (LIT-12011945) for information on when to install and use the Metasys Database Manager during your specific upgrade scenario. If you install the Metasys Database Manager before the ADS/ADX or ODS, a database error appears: There was an error connecting to the target database. This behavior is expected. The databases monitored by the Metasys Database Manager are not created until you install the ADS/ADX or ODS.
