Introduction Samsung has released a new version of the Android operating system that runs on your tablets (similar to how Windows runs your computer). This is something that we cannot control and the update will automatically get sent to your Tablets so we have provided step by step instructions to follow so that your tablets get upgraded correctly and the Field Link application will still work properly. Your tablets can be in 1 of 3 states which will determine where in the instructions you should start: 1. Android update not downloaded and not installed 2. Android update downloaded, but not installed 3. Android update downloaded, installed, but Jelly Bean Keyboard not installed. Here are simple steps to check which state you are in: Check your Android Version 1. Go to Settings on your desktop. If there is not a shortcut on your desktop, go to Apps and then Settings. 2. In the left hand column, scroll down until you see About device. Tap on About device. 3. Check the Android version. If it is 4.1.1 (or any version of 4.1 for that matter), then your tablet is not updated yet. If it is 4.2.2, then your tablet already has the updated version of Android. You can skip ahead to the section about checking what keyboard you have installed on Page 5. Created by Interactions 2
Download the Android Update The Android update is quite large and will probably take about an hour to download on each tablet depending on your tablet. If you have a slow connection, it can take much longer. You can perform other tasks on the tablet while the update is downloading, but to make things easier, please start the download on each tablet at the end of the day before you go home. The update should download overnight and be ready for installation when you arrive the next morning. 1. On the same About device page where you checked the version in the section above, tap on Software Version. 2. Tap on Check for updates. 1. At this point, if you are not logged in to the ditab73@gmail.com email on your tablet, you will be prompted to login in order to access the Google Play Store. To login to the Google Playstore, type in the password ez1234ez 2. Once the download begins, you will see a popup for the Software update, 652.29 MB Created by Interactions 3
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you set your Tablets to download the update overnight, DO NOT TURN OFF your Tablets when you go home for the evening. This will prevent the update from being downloaded. Installing the Android Update Once the update has been downloaded on your tablet, it will take about 15 minutes to install the new version of Android and the new Jelly Bean Keyboard. You will need to do this on all 3 tablets, but the installation can be done concurrently to save time. To install the update, follow these steps: 1. Whether you have just downloaded the update or downloaded it overnight, you will get an Upgrade Notification popup on your tablet with the option to Install Later, Install All, and Install. If you don t see this notification, on the same About device page where you checked the version in the section above, tap on Software Version. 2. Tap on Check for updates. If the update has downloaded, then the Upgrade Notification popup will open. Created by Interactions 4
3. Tap on Install All. You will see a popup that your Tablet (Device) will be rebooted. Tap on OK 4. It will take a few minutes for the upgrade to install. When the upgrade is complete, your tablet will start and you will see a new home page that probably has more Icons on it than were there before. Additionally, if you had any widgets for weather, etc., they will be reset. 5. After installing the Android update, you will still need to download and install the Jelly Bean Keyboard in order for Field Link to work correctly with the new version of Android. Please refer to the separate Instruction Document to download and install the Jelly Bean Keyboard. Created by Interactions 5
Recreating the Field Link shortcut on your Desktop After the update has completed, you will notice that your Desktop is different. While the Field Link application has not been removed from the Tablet, there is no longer a shortcut on your Desktop. This can be fixed with the following steps: 1. On your Home Page, there may be some Widgets for Weather and Music taking up the top half of your page. To make room for the Field Link icon, you may need to remove at least one of these Widgets. If there is already room on your Desktop, you can skip to next step. You can remove the Widget by Tapping and Holding your finger anywhere on the Widget. This will reveal a Trash Can at the top of the page where you can drag and drop the Widget to remove it. The trash can will be highlighted in red when you have dragged the Widget to correct spot. Once you see the red highlight, release your finger and the Widget will be deleted. 2. After you have made space on your Desktop, go Applications. There should be a shortcut on your Desktop. 3. Scroll through the installed Apps on your Tablet until you find the Field Link app. To scroll, drag your finger left or right on the screen to change screens forward or backward. Swipe from right to left to move forward one page. Swipe from left to right to move backward one page. Created by Interactions 6
4. Once you find the Field Link application, you can move it to your Desktop by Tapping and Holding your finger on the Field Link Icon. 5. This will open a view of your Desktop and you should then be able to drag and drop the Field Link icon on to your Desktop. Release your finger once you have dragged the Field Link icon to where you want it on your Desktop. Created by Interactions 7
