SAP HANA Inspirience Day Best practice ingredients for a successful SAP HANA project Maurice Sens SAP Lead Architect, T-Systems Nederland
Today's issues with SAP Business Warehouse and SAP systems. Massive database growth on SAP Business Warehouse Caused by Staging area Cube Design Headline ODS Complex and time consuming ETL processes Poor Query response times for end-users Data duplicated many times SAP ERP (OLTP) SAP BW (OLAP) New transactions ETL Queries Database 50% data 50% index 1:5 Database 50% data 50% index SAP HANA Inspirience day An event of T-Systems and HP Nederland, powered by SAP 12 February 2013 2

First HANA PoC Issues and resolutions. Issue Installation and connection of HANA Hardware Appliance in existing DataCenter infrastructure R3load could not handle cluster table BSEG Log file overflow High HANA Software patch rate Lack of Monitoring and Management tools Security HANA Studio requires update when HANA is patched Description and Resolution DC and Systems Management Operations team do not like foreign hardware R3load replaced by SAP SLT. Arrived late in the game. R3load no longer needed. Ended up in archive stuck. No HANA, no access. Was solved by adding NFS storage to HANA Appliance In a short project time window, we went through 21 patch sets. It is getting better now. They are also bundled now HANA Studio was a little bit poor of functionality. It is getting better now with SolMan and DBACockpit No role or any other mechanism in place. This has been fixed. In BW there was no issue at all This is a lot of effort on the desktop side SAP HANA Inspirience day An event of T-Systems and HP Nederland, powered by SAP 12 February 2013 10

SAP BW on HANA migration effort: some facts DB Export: 11 hours @ 10 parallel jobs DB Install via SAPInst: 21,5 hours @ 10 par jobs (actual DB import 14,5 hours) Post-processing: 2 days (not including Conversion to in-memory DSOs and Cubes) Headline Note 1698281 provides a Python script (!) that needs to be run on the OS. Script delta merges all ColumnStore tables and loads ALL tables (~50K tables) into memory runtime > 24 hours! Next steps and advice for your SAP HANA project. Today (Batch) Data in OLTP Data in OLAP High TCO with ETL No Real Time reporting Tomorrow (Realtime) Only one Data Set One Single Point of Truth No ETL needed Real Time reporting More Simulation capabilities Advise: - Secure skilled resources (both Engineers and Business Analysts) - Start small and scale-up with requirements ; one step at the time - Involve end-users with a PoC and/or demo sessions. They will get enthusiastic! SAP HANA Inspirience day An event of T-Systems and HP Nederland, powered by SAP 12 February 2013 18
