RESEARCH ANALYTICS From Web of Science to InCites September 20 th, 2010 Marta Plebani marta.plebani@thomsonreuters.com
Web Of Science: main purposes Find high-impact articles and conference proceedings. Uncover relevant results in related fields. Discover emerging trends that help you pursue successful research and grant acquisition. Identify potential collaborators with significant citation records. Integrate searching, writing, and bibliography creation into one streamlined process.
Web Of Science: where to start from
Web Of Science: the first steps of analysis
Journal Citation Reports: beyond the IMPACT FACTOR WITH JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS YOU CAN: Sort journal data by clearly defined fields: Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, Total Cites, Total Articles, Cited Half-Life, or Journal Title. Sort subject category data by clearly defined fields: Total Cites, Median Impact Factor, Aggregate Impact Factor, Aggregate Immediacy Index, Aggregated Cited Half-Life, Number of Journals in Category, Number of Articles in Category. Better understand a journal s impact over time with the Five-Year Impact Factor and trend graph. Seamlessly link with other interfaces: Full integration with Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge lets you link from Web of Science to JCR Web, from JCR journal records to ulrichsweb.com and recent Current Contents Connect tables of contents, and to and from your library s OPAC

Web Services - Open architecture Supporting Institution data collection Web Services API Institutional repository Internal Publications Databases Research analysis tools ISI Web of Knowledge Web Services Article Match & Retrieve Updated Citation Count etc ResearcherID Individual profiles and Publication portfolios ResearcherID Upload ResearcherID Download User contributed data
Web Services A Web Services administrator at an institution can request access to Web of Science Web Services Submit a Web of Science (all General Search fields) Web Services query Results are retrieved in XML format Web Services Lite (free): Fields returned are - UT (record identifier), article title, all authors, bibliographic source and author keywords Web Services Premium: Additional Fields will be available. Useful tool to help build institutional repositories, or bulk download of data for internal projects etc.
Article Match Retrieve (AMR) Can be used in conjunction with Web Services, or as a stand alone service. Used to supplement records with an up to date Web of Science Times Cited count and links into ISI Web of Knowledge records Submit the bibliographic records of a collection of articles in XML format via a Web Service Thomson Reuters matches the bibliographic data to the records in our database and returns supplementary information such as: Web of Science Times Cited count Various links into the Web of Science Links into Journal Citation Reports
Web Services real world examples Some real world examples of Web of Science - Web Services used to supplement basic bibliographic information. 12
Research ID - Upload / Download ResearcherID is a free, online community where authors receive a unique identifier to eliminate author misidentification, increase recognition of one s work and facilitate global collaboration among researchers Researchers contribute the data themselves, but it is also possible for an institution to upload profiles and publications on behalf of their researchers optional - Institution process - Thomson Reuters process - Individual process
ResearcherID publication upload Generate profiles and submit suggested publications for each individual 14
ResearcherID Download Bulk download (XML) of publications and affiliation information for each of the profiles you submitted 15
Web Services to support Research Analytics Research evaluation initiatives are often focused around people or departments. However it is challenging to collate publication data in a systematic way ResearcherID upload and download tools can be extremely valuable in helping to collect publication information around the individual Web Services help institutions to collate their own datasets. The Article Match & Retrieve tool is ideal for enriching and maintaining this collection of papers. Thomson Reuters InCites TM includes a wide array of tools for evaluating research and is integrated with ResearcherID / Institutional collated datasets. Thomson Reuters Valued added metrics and data InCites TM (or other data source) Supplement an Institutional Repository with contextual, normalized data 16
Thomson Reuters Research Analytics: the Source and Foundation Data Web of Science Thomson Reuters Processing Expertise Address Unification Data Cleansing & Standardization Normalization and Baselines Research Analytics Resources For many years Thomson Reuters has provided a wide range of tools and services supporting accurate and effective research evaluation. Our specialist work with Web of Science data and ensure maximum collection and unification before delivery.
Thomson Reuters InCites
Thomson Reuters Research Analytics: Real Metrics For Your Institution Authors Relative Performance At-a-Glance With a baseline of 1.0 for each, you immediately have a gauge of the level of influence of an author s
InCites Research Performance Profiles Institutional Datasets two methods by which to create Address Based Extraction of Web of Science records for all published items with an author affiliated with your institution. All potential address variants are searched, with input from you. This is a straightforward, relatively fast way to create an RPP dataset, and by far the most common method utilized to date. Author Based Provides more customized fields through which to measure research performance, such as your own Department groupings. Data may be extracted for multiple variations of an Author s name, as well works by current staff produced
InCites Research Performance Profiles Optional Author Based Data Sets Author List a report unique to author-based datasets. Author-Based data sets provide an enhanced level of customization for assessing institutional performance. There are several methods for their creation For absolute accuracy, take advantage of our ResearcherID resource. A batch upload feature allows creation of profiles for staff, with subsequent batch upload of publications lists. Provide us with a list of staff names along with population of specific fields (Department, Role, etc,) and respective publications lists. Provide us with a list of staff names along with population of specific fields (Department, Role, etc,) we ll extract publications from Web of Science for each other, but recommend your viewing of this information for quality control. Non-Web of Science documents may be included in publications lists, though no metrics can be associated with these.
InCites Included with a Standard Subscription Global Comparisons Updated Annually, data 1981-2009 Institutional Comparisons for universities, research centers, and government labs in many world regions US, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, Australia, and more. National Comparisons for over 180 countries and pre-defined groups such as the EU, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, etc. Research Performance Profile Updated Quarterly, data 1981-present An address-based (most common), author-based, country-based, or topic-based data set extracted from Web of Science. Citing items and associated reports are included. Research Performance Profile Data Delivery provision of your customized data for use in your own internal systems, to populate an Institutional Repository with metadata, etc. Option 1 XML format, all Web of Science fields, placed on FTP server. Option 2 You may extract this yourself from Web of Science through authorized API use. Options 1 and 2 are comprised solely of Web of Science data for each record, no InCites metrics are included. Option 3 Database format (Access) of InCites data, placed on FTP server, key article info along with InCites article metrics.
