Introduction Cution Series Series Setup Guide Series Introductory Informtion Instructions in this Setup Guide show the ipf840 printer. Note tht your printer my look different from these illustrtions in some cses. However, the bsic opertions re the sme. The mrkers used in this setup guide re for the ipf830 series, for the ipf840 series, nd for the ipf850 series. ENG Red this mnul before ttempting to operte the printer. Keep this mnul in hndy loction for future reference. Before Setting Up the Printer Before setting up the printer, check the completed imge of the printer you purchsed nd mke sure you hve enough spce to set up the printer. Overview of Setup Set up the printer using the following procedure. Only perform the steps for which the nme of the model you purchsed is specified on the right of the printer. * Assemble the Stnd (P.3) Even if you do not use the printer driver, be sure to instll Medi Configurtion Tool from the provided User Softwre CD-ROM. With Medi Configurtion Tool, the pper types tht re vilble in your re cn be registered to the printer. For instructions on instlltion, refer to "Instll the Softwre" on pge 11. (In Windows, select Instll Individul Softwre in the Setup Menu window to instll Medi Configurtion Tool only.) * Instll the Roll Unit Instll the Printer * Attch the Medi Tke-up Unit * Set Up the Output Stcker Prepre to Turn the Power On Instll the Ink Tnks (P.3) (P.3) (P.5) (P.5) (P.5) (P.7) Detils for ech step re given in this Setup Guide. Simply follow the instructions to instll the printer. If n error messge is displyed during setup or other problems occur, refer to "Responding to Messges" on pge 20. Pper Reference Guide This guide describes bout the types nd specifictions of the vilble medi on the printer. To refer to the electronic mnuls Refer to "How to Disply the Electronic Mnuls" (P.18) 2

Assemble the Stnd Assemble the stnd on which you will instll the printer. -> Refer to "Assemble the Stnd" in the Printer Stnd Setup Guide Instll the Roll Unit Attch the roll unit to the stnd. -> Refer to "Instll the Roll Unit" in the Printer Stnd Setup Guide Instll the Printer 1 Remove the pckging mteril on top of the printer. While 2 under two people hold the crrying hndles printer the little, printer hve on one third end person nd lift remove the the 3 pckging mteril nd the plstic covering from under the printer. After the pckging mteril hs been removed, lower the printer. Remove the pckging mteril nd the plstic covering from the other side of the printer the sme wy. 4 Pull out the roll unit. 5 With three people holding the crrying hndles under the printer on both ends, lift the printer. Cution The printer lone weighs pproximtely 2 kg. Moving the printer requires t lest six people, three on either side. Be creful to void bck strin nd other injuries. When moving the printer, firmly grsp the crrying hndles () under ech side. Holding the printer t other positions is dngerous nd cuse injury nd dmge if the printer is dropped. When setting the printer down temporrily mke sure to put the printer on flt, stble plce. When stnding the printer up, mke sure the side with the control pnel is up, nd plce crdbord or other mteril underneth to prevent scrtching. Furthermore, mke sure tht the weight of the printer is tken by the corner of the printer. If the weight is tken by ny other prt of the printer, the printer my become dmged. When stnding up the printer or supporting the printer, hold the metl prts of the printer. If you hold plstic prt, the printer my become dmged. The wy to set the printer down or to crry with the lod only to the center of the printer, my cuse dmge to the printer. 3

Align the tringles on the bck of the printer nd Stnd when setting the printer on the Stnd. 6 7 Secure the printer nd Stnd firmly together using four M4 hex screws on ech side by the Allen Wrench. Push in the roll unit. 8 Use the Roll Unit Cble to connect the port on the bck of the roll unit to the Roll Unit Port on the bck of the printer. Insert the Roll Unit Cble firmly, ll the wy in. 4

Attch the Medi Tke-up Unit (Option) Attch the medi tke-up unit (optionl) which utomticlly tkes up printed roll pper. -> Refer to the Medi Tke-up Unit Setup Guide included with the medi tke-up unit Set Up the Output Stcker Attch the wheeled output stcker or sttionry output stcker to collect ejected pper. -> Refer to "Attch the Output Stcker" in the Printer Stnd Setup Guide Prepre to Turn the Power On Remove the protective pckging mteril from the printer. Remove the tpe nd other pckging mteril used to secure the 1 2 printer. Open the Top Cover. 3 Use the Allen Wrench to loosen the screw of the Belt Stopper (). Rotte the Belt Stopper to the left nd remove the stopper. Keep the Belt Stopper you removed nd the Allen Wrench for future use. You will need them in cse you move the printer to nother loction. When you open the top cover, clening brush is stored on the right side. Tke it out nd use it when clening inside the top cover. (when using the sttionry output stcker or the stcker) Lift the Ejection Guide. 4 5 Attch the four Ejection Supports () on the bck of the Ejection Guide. 5

(when using the sttionry output stcker or the stcker) Lower the Ejection Guide. 6 7 Close the Top Cover. 8 Plug the power cord into the Power Supply Connector on the bck of the printer. 9 Plug the power cord into the outlet. 6

M BK R G BK M M BK BK G Instll the Ink Tnks Instll the 5 ink tnks. 1 Press the Power button to turn on the printer. 2 When the following screen ppers, use the nd keys to select lnguge nd press OK. 3 Select your locl time zone nd press OK. Open the ink tnk covers s instructed. 5 Rise the stopper () of the ink tnk lock lever for the color you re mounting. After rising the ink tnk lock lever s fr s possible, pull it forwrd. 6 Shke ech ink tnk gently 7 to 8 times before opening its pouch. Filure to shke the ink tnks my result in reduced print qulity becuse ink ingredients hve settled on the bottom of the tnk. Press down on the ink tnk lock lever until it locks. Mke sure the ink tnk lock lever stys in the locked position. If the ink tnk is cold, llow it to djust to room temperture before ttching it to the printer. 7 Open the pouch nd remove the ink tnk. b 8 Orient the ink tnks nd mount them in the holders with ink holes down s shown in the figure. 9 After rising the ink tnk lock lever s fr s possible, press it bck down until it clicks into plce. At this time, repet steps 5 nd 9 two to three times to ensure tht the ink tnk is securely instlled in the printer. Never touch the ink holes () or metl contcts (b). Touching these prts my cuse stins, dmge the ink tnk, nd ffect print qulity. Avoid dropping the ink tnk fter removing it from the pouch. Otherwise, ink my lek nd cuse stins. Do not remove ink tnks to shke them fter they hve been mounted. Doing so my cuse ink to spill. b An ink tnk cnnot be mounted in the holder if it is not oriented correctly for the color. Do not try to force n ink tnk into the holder if it does not go in normlly. Check the color indicted on the lbel ffixed to the ink tnk lock lever nd the ink tnk orienttion, nd then try mounting the tnk into the holder gin. GY 7

M BK R G B 10 Mke sure the ink lmp lights red. 11 Check tht the ink lmp is light, nd then push the ink tnk more strongly until it touches the bse. 12 Repet steps 5 to 11 to mount ech of the Ink Tnks. Close the ink tnk covers. If the ink lmp does not light, repet steps 5 nd 9. 8

Instll the Printhed When Open top cover. is displyed on Pull the printhed fixer lever forwrd ll 1 2 the disply screen, open the top cover. the wy to open it completely. 3 Lift the printhed fixer cover () to open it fully. At this time, mke sure tht no debris becomes dhere to the contcts (b) on the crrige. Instructions re now shown on the disply screen regrding printhed instlltion. b 4 Hold the printhed by the grips () s you remove it from the pouch. 5 Remove the ornge protective prt (). To remove ornge protective prt (b), push the grip (c) s you remove the prt. b c 6 Insert the printhed into the crrige (b) with the ink holes () fcing wy from the printer s shown in the figure. Crefully push the printhed firmly into the crrige (b), ensuring tht the prt covered by the protective prt does not touch the crrige. b Never touch the prts covered by the protective prt. This my dmge the printhed nd ffect printing qulity. The printhed contins ink, so be creful not to spill it once the protective prts re removed. Do not rettch the protective prt fter removing it. Dispose of these mterils ccording to locl regultions. Pull the printhed fixer cover down towrd Push the printhed fixer lever bck. 7 8 9 the front to lock the printhed in plce. Close the top cover. 9

Lod Pper to Adjust the Printhed Lod the included pper nd djust the Printhed. 1 Select type of pper for printhed dj. is shown on the disply screen. Use the nd keys to select Cut Sheet nd then press OK. 2 Open the top cover nd lift the relese lever. Do not touch the liner scle (), crrige shft (b), or fixed blde (c). This my stin your hnds nd dmge the printer. c b 3 Insert the pper included with the printer between the plten () nd pper retiner (b) in portrit orienttion with the printed side of the pper fcing up. Lod the pper ligned with the pper lignment lines (c) to ensure tht the pper is not crooked, nd lign the leding edge of the pper with the front side of the line (d). When inserted, sheets re utomticlly held by suction ginst the plten. 4 Lower the relese lever nd close the top cover. c d c b 5 The screen for selecting the pper type is shown on the disply screen. Press or to select the type of pper loded in the printer. Select Coted Pper nd then press OK. Then from the menu tht ppers, select Coted Pper nd then press OK. 6 Once feeding the pper is finished, the printer utomticlly strts chrging the system with ink nd djusting the printhed. Chrging the system with ink nd djusting the printhed for the first time tkes bout 30 minutes. Instll the softwre on your computer while the printer is working. (See "Instll the Softwre" on pge 11) Pper begins feeding. Chrging the system with ink fills the system from the ink tnks to the printhed. In ddition, clening is performed to keep the printer in optiml condition. This my cuse the remining ink indictor nd mintennce crtridge cpcity indictor to drop some mount. The strter ink tnk is for first-time instlltion. It is recommended tht you purchse replcement ink tnks quickly. If Pper loded crooked. is displyed, relod the cut sheet by referring to step 3. Once the printhed djustment hs finished, the pper with the djustment pttern printed on it is ejected. Relese the relese lever nd remove the pper. This completes the printer setup. When you lod roll pper fter the setup, you need to first press the Lod key nd select roll pper s the pper source. For detils, refer to the User's Guide nd Bsic Guide tht cn be ccessed by the procedure in "How to Disply the Electronic Mnuls" (P. 18). You cn lso see the method for loding roll pper using the control pnel nvigtion function. You cn view the nvigtion using the following procedure. 1. Press the Nvigte key. 2. Press the nd keys to select Lod Roll Pper nd then press the OK key. 3. Press the nd keys to select View Op. Guide nd then press the OK key. The nvigtion strts. 10

Cnon does not send e-mil to you using the Cnon Lrge Formt Printer Extended Survey Progrm. You cn terminte utomtic trnsmission of the Cnon Lrge Formt Printer Extended Survey Progrm t ny time. The utomtic trnsmission cn be terminted t ny time. If you hve ny questions bout this progrm, plese contct our customer support contct center. Windows You cn print from Windows vi USB or TCP/IP (network) connections. The instlltion procedure vries depending on how your printer is connected. Instll the softwre by following instructions below. If you connect the printer with USB cble, refer to "For USB connections" on pge 11. If you connect the printer with TCP/IP (network), refer to "For TCP/IP (network) connections" on pge 12. Instlltion requires dministrtive rights (such s those of Administrtor). Be sure to log on using n ccount with dministrtive rights before instlltion. The following screen my be displyed during instlltion depending on the security settings of your computer. Select Dectivte the block nd click Next. <Comptible Operting Systems> 32-bit: Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vist, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP 64-bit: Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vist, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 For the Windows OS, use the ltest version of Service Pck. For USB connections Instll the softwre Use USB cble tht conforms to the Hi-Speed USB specifiction. Connect the USB cble to the printer ccording to the on-screen instructions during instlltion of the printer driver. If you connect the USB cble before instlling the printer driver, the printer driver my not be instlled correctly. 1 After mking sure the printer is not connected to the computer, turn the computer on. Insert the provided User Softwre CD-ROM for your operting system in the CD-ROM drive. 2 In the Setup Menu window, click Instll Printer Driver. To choose different lnguge, click Lnguge. You cn view the bsic opertion of the printer in the Bsic Guide tht is contined on the CD-ROM by clicking View Bsic Guide. 3 Select the softwre to instll in the Instlltion List window, nd then click Next. Point the mouse pointer t softwre nme to disply summry of the softwre. 4 In the Select Country or Region of Use window, select the country or region of 5 After reding the license greement, click Yes. use nd click Next. 11

6 If you cn gree Extended Survey Progrm, click Agree. 7 If you cn respond to the questionnire, click Next. 8 Confirm your questionnire responses, nd click Next. 9 In the Printer Selection window, select The printer is connected directly to computer nd click Next. 10 In the Printer Instlltion dilog box, select Instll with USB Connection, nd click Next. 11 When the following dilog box is displyed, mke sure the printer is on nd use the USB cble to connect the printer to the computer. If the printer is lredy connected to the network, proceed to step 2. Proceed to step 8. 6 When serching the vilble printer on the network Avilble printers re listed in the Serch Results window. Select printer from the list on either their IPv4 Devices or IPv6 Devices tbs nd click Next. The IPv6 Devices tb is not displyed in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 R2, nd Windows Server 2003. If the printer you wnt to use is not displyed in the list on the IPv6 Devices tb, connect vi IPv4 insted. If the printer you wnt to use is not displyed in the list of printers on the IPv4 Devices tb, refer to "When the printer cnnot be found on the network" on pge 14 to setup nd configure n IP ddress for the printer. The following step differs depending on the IP Address Sttus of the selected printer. In the cse of Not Set or IP Address Overlp, proceed to step 7. In the cse of Avilble, the instlltion begins. Proceed to step 9. 7 When serching the vilble printer on the network In the Method of Configuring IP Addresses window, select the method of configuring the IP ddress s suitble for your system. To configure by directly entering the IP ddress Select Configure mnully in Method of Configuring IP Addresses nd enter the IP ddress. To hve the IP ddresses llocted utomticlly using the DHCP server function Select Configure utomticlly. Note tht other settings outside of the procedure re lso required. ("Using DHCP", P.14) Once you hve selected the method for configuring IP ddresses, enter your preferred nme for the printer in Device Nme nd the instlltion loction in Printer Loction under Informtion About Printer to Configure, nd click Instll to begin the instlltion. Proceed to step 9. 8 When entering the printer's IP ddress mnully In the IP Address Specifiction window, select either IPv4 Address or IPv6 Address to enter the printer's IP ddress nd click Instll. The instlltion process begins. Ask your network dministrtor for the IP ddress, s needed. The IPv6 Devices tb is not displyed in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 R2, nd Windows Server 2003. 9 After reviewing the instlltion results in the Complete Instlltion window, click Next. 10 In the Finish window, select Restrt my computer now nd click Restrt. 11 When you restrt the computer, the softwre settings re enbled. When the printer cnnot be found on the network If your printer cnnot be found when connecting to the network for the first time, setup n IP ddress for the printer nd then configure it on the printer. 1 On the tb selection screen of the control pnel, press the nd keys to select (settings/dj. tb) nd press OK. 2 Use the nd keys to select Interfce Setup nd press OK. When ink fills the system for the first time, fter printhed djustment is finished, specify the IP ddress on the printer's control pnel. Press the nd keys to select field for inputting vlues. 2. Use the nd keys to input vlues. Pressing increses the vlue by one. Pressing decreses the vlue by one. Holding down either the or keys continully increses or decreses the vlue. 3. Press OK once you hve finished. 5 Press 6 On Menu. the registrtion confirmtion messge tht ppers, select Yes using the nd keys, nd then press OK. The IP ddress is set on the printer. Next, restrt instlltion of the printer driver. 7 In the Serch Results window, select Specify the IP ddress of vilble printers in the network nd click Next. When the IP Address Specifictions window ppers, follow the instructions of "When entering the printer's IP ddress mnully" in step 8 to 11 on pge 13 to complete the instlltion of the softwre. If the following screen ppers, click Retry nd select Specify the IP ddress of vilble printers in the network on the next screen tht ppers. Using DHCP To use the DHCP server function to utomticlly llocte n IP ddress to the printer, one of the following settings needs to be configured. Check with your network dministrtor for the settings tht mtch your system. When used in n environment with DNS server Configure the DNS dynmic updte function in the printer nd register the printer DNS host nme with the DNS server. When used in n environment without DNS server Configure the DHCP server to lwys llocte the sme IP ddress to the printer. This section describes how to turn on DNS dynmic updte from the control pnel of the printer. The DNS dynmic updte function cn lso be configured using Remote UI. Instll the softwre Mc OS You cn print from Mc OS vi USB or network connections such s Bonjour or IP. Instll the softwre depending on your computer environment. <Comptible Operting Systems> OS X v10.6.8 to v10.9 If you instll the softwre, log onto the computer s n dministrtor. 1 After mking sure the printer is not connected to the computer, turn the computer on. Insert the provided User Softwre CD-ROM for your operting system in the CD-ROM drive. 2 On the desktop, double-click the CD-ROM icon nd then the ipf Printer Setup icon. User Softwre 3 Click Next. 4 If screen requesting the nme nd pssword is displyed, enter the user nme nd pssword of user with dministrtive rights nd click OK (or Instll Helper on OS X v10.7 or lter). 5 Select the country or region where you re using the printer, nd click Next. 6 Select the softwre to instll nd click Next. Move the mouse pointer ner the nme of the softwre to disply n overview of the softwre. 7 After reding the softwre license greement, click Yes. 8 If you cn gree Extended Survey Progrm, click Agree. 9 If you cn respond to the questionnire, click Next. 10 Confirm your questionnire responses, nd click Next. 11 The progress of the instlltion is displyed. Once ll of the instlltion hs finished, the screen utomticlly dvnces to the setup screen. Connect the printer to computer 12 When the following screen is displyed, mke sure tht the printer is on, nd then connect the printer to the computer or the network with cble. When connecting to network, pss the network cble through the wiring brcket (). For USB connections For network connections Be creful not to insert the USB cble into the LAN port. 15

Select the printer 13 Select the method of connecting to the printer, nd click Next. For USB connection, the printer is utomticlly dded nd you should proceed to step 17. 14 Click Add Printer. 15 Select the printer to dd from Defult nd click Add. You cn view description of dding printers by clicking Help. It my tke long time until the printer informtion is displyed on the screen. You cn lso dd the printer by specifying the IP ddress by selecting IP. 16 Click Next. 17 Select the Execute medi type updte check box nd click Next. 18 Click OK. 19 Click Exit. The following screen is displyed while the medi informtion is being updted. Do not perform ny other opertions. When the medi informtion hs been updted, the screen is no longer displyed. If the sme model of printer is lredy registered on the computer, screen is displyed for printer selection. Select the desired printer nd click Next. 16

Responding to Messges Error messges my pper on the disply screen of the control pnel during printer instlltion. If so, it my not indicte problem with the printer, nd the issue my be esily resolved. (See steps 2-5 on pge 10) Pper size not detected. Lift the relese lever nd relod pper. The leding edge of the cut sheet is loded behind the position indicted by the pper lignment line. The roll pper is fed even though cut sheet remins selected s the pper source. Relod the cut sheet so tht the leding edge of the cut sheet is in front of the pper lignment line. (See steps 2-5 on pge 10) Lift up the relese lever nd rewind the roll pper onto the roll holder. Next, press the Lod key, select roll pper s the pper source, nd feed the roll pper gin.
