DIRECTV iphone application guide Version 1.0.5 What is it? The DIRECTV iphone application is a free mobile guide and remote scheduler available on any Apple iphone or ipod touch device. You can search for shows, browse the guide by date and time or by channel, then remotely schedule a recording to your DVR. Once you have found the program you were looking for you can set that program to record right from your device. Where can I get it? You can download the application from the itunes app store by searching for DIRECTV. You may also download the application on any iphone or ipod touch device directly by selecting the App Store icon on the device then searching for DIRECTV. 1
How Do I use it? After downloaded the application press the DIRECTV icon on your device. First you will be prompted to sign in with your DIRECTV.com email and password, this is the same information you use to login to your account on www.directv.com. Signing in with your account is required to schedule recordings You may also view the application as a guest. If you view the application as a guest you will be prompted for your DIRECTV.com login in information if you try to schedule a recording. To view as a guest you will need to input your current ZIP code to view programming at the correct time for your area. 2
How do I search for a show? To search for a show tap the Search for Shows button or the search bar at the top of the screen. This will bring up a keyboard to enter in your search term. Enter in your search and press the blue search button to see your results. 3
You may also press the blue arrow in the upper right corner to change how you search. Press the Save Settings button to change your search and then run your search again. Once you have entered your search your results will be displayed as single episodes or in folders. The folders show the title of the program and the number of episodes that are in that folder. Tap the folder to view the listings inside. 4
Inside the folders you may view the listings by Date or by Channel. Each entry will include the episode title, the channel, and the air date/time. Tap a program to view its details and schedule a recording. You can return to any previous screen by pressing the button at the top left of any screen. 5
How do I Browse the Guide? You may browse the current guide by selecting Browse by Channel or look ahead by selecting Browse by Date and Time. Browse by Channel Selecting Browse by Chanel will bring up the guide. You can cycle through channels by swiping your finger up or down, you may also jump to a channel number or name by touching the list of number or alphabet on the right side of the screen. Tap a channel to view the programs that are showing on that channel. Viewing a channel will show you all the programs that are scheduled on that channel up to 14 days. Swipe your finger up or down to view all the listings on that channel, each day will be displayed towards the top of the screen. Tap a program to view the program s info and schedule a recording. 6
Browse by Date and Time After selecting Browse by Date and Time choose your day and the time by swiping your finger up or down. You may select up to 14 days in advance of the current time. If you try to select a time that has already passed the dial will revert to the current time. After selecting the desired date and time tap the Get Listings button to see your results. 7
Your results will be displayed for your selected date and time. You can move forward or backward in time by pressing the black arrows to the left or right of the listed date and time. Tap a program to view the program s info. 8
Viewing Program Info and Scheduling a Recording After selecting your program of choice you will see the program info screen. Here you can see information about the program and the recording options. You can tap the show picture, if available to view more and larger pictures for that program. 9
Setting a Recording Select Record Episode or Record Series to remote schedule your DVR. Tapping either button will take you to the DVR settings page, if you viewed as a guest you will be prompted for your log in information here to schedule a recording. On the DVR settings page you can change the receiver you would like to record on, set the priority and select when you would like it deleted. NOTE: the R1x receivers currently do not support remote bookings of Series recordings. After choosing your settings press the green Record button to send your remote booking request. After it is sent you will see a confirmation message if it is successful. 10
Settings and Contact Information In the settings page you can change a number of options like hiding Adult content from the guide, changing your time zone when you are traveling, and logging out of your account. You can also tap the i in the upper right corner of the screen to contact DIRECTV via email with a question or concern. 11
Error Messages/Know Issues and FAQs Unable to connect: If you receive an unable to connect message check to make sure that you are connected to WiFi, Edge or a 3G network and have good signal strength. If you believe you are connected but still get an Unable to connect error try to open up a web page in Safari. If you are able to open up a web page try waiting a few minutes before trying the DIRECTV application again, if you cannot open up a web page you are not successfully connected to a network. I entered the correct DIRECTV.com login information but it says it is incorrect: This may occur if the network that you are connected to is having unusual slowness issues. If this occurs please try to connect via WiFi and try again. If you still cannot login via WiFi please wait 10 minutes and try again, we may be doing work on our servers that could temporarily disable logins. You will not be able to login or schedule recordings if your account is past due. Past Due Accounts: If an account is past due you will not be able to log in or use the advanced features of the application, like scheduling a recording. All accounts must be in good standing to log in and schedule recordings. The application crashed when I was doing a search: Application crashes may happen from time to time. The most common occurrence of an application crash is when the iphone is switching between the Edge and 3G networks. Information from Apple: Applications on iphone or ipod touch may close unexpectedly because the device has begun to run low on application memory. This does not mean there is too much data stored on the device but simply means that it is running too many memory-intensive tasks. Resolution The following tips may help if this issue occurs and may help prevent these behaviors in the future. Turn iphone or ipod touch off and on and then reopen the application you were using. To turn the iphone or ipod touch off and on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of device for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. 12
With Safari, try to minimize the number of pages/browser windows that are open on the device by closing the Safari windows that are not being used. Avoid opening or surfing as web sites that have a lot of large images that need to be downloaded or rendered with Safari. When not needed, turn Traffic Status OFF in Maps (Tap Maps, tap the Eye icon (in the lower right corner), and then tap Hide Traffic). Use itunes to update to the latest version of the iphone or ipod touch software. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1295 I set a remote booking but it did not record: The success rate of remote booking is very high but in some cases a booking may fail due to network or satellite issues. The most common failure reason is booking a recording for a show that has already started when your receiver is also recording two shows. If your receiver is currently recording two shows and you try to remote record a third show during that time the remote booking will fail. This only occurs for shows that have already started, if you remote schedule a show in advanced and set the priority to Definitely Record the remote booking request will take priority over your other scheduled recordings. Your remote booking request will also fail if you set a program to Record if Possible while you have two other programs scheduled to record. The two recordings on the receiver take priority over a remote booking when it is set for Record if Possible. When I try to book a recording how can I tell which receiver is which? You can individually name your DIRECTV Receivers to easily identify them. To do this go to www.directv.com and sign into your account, once you are signed in and viewing your account details select Setup Details from the menu on the left. Once you are viewing your Current setup go down to the section titled My Receivers, you can change the name of any receiver by clicking on the change button and selecting a location from the drop down menu or select other to enter in a custom name (it may take a couple hours to reflect the change in the application). The times in the guide are wrong: The application uses your iphone or ipod touch s system time as the default time display. You can change the time zone by pressing the Settings button then press the Display Time Zone button. If you signed in as a Guest the application will use the time zone for the ZIP Code that you entered, to change the ZIP Code or to sign in with your account select the Settings button then select Logout. 13
Why do I see all these channels I don t get? The default view for the guide is to show all channels on DIRECTV. If you would like to see channels that you receive press the Settings button and change the Channel Options to Show Channels I get. How do I report an issue? You can report issues found with the application by going to settings and selecting the i icon in the upper right corner of the screen. From here you can send an email to dvrscheduler@directv.com to send a question or report an issue. If you select the email address button your will exit the application and automatically be taken to the devices email program to directly send an email from the device. How do I see if my booking was successful on my receiver? Press the menu button and select Manage Recordings. Select the To Do List to see if your program is listed or if you set a Series recording you can select Prioritizer to view your Series recordings and change the program s priority. If you do not see your program in either of these locations select History to see a list of programs that have been recorded, you may see your program listed here and the reason it was not scheduled to record. I scheduled a recording but I did not receive a confirmation email. There are no confirmation emails when scheduling via the application. I still have a question that was not answered here.
