Firmware Upgrade Wizard v4.1.1 A Technical Guide Nvember 2015
Intrductin The Firmware Upgrade Wizard prvides the fllwing features: It supprts upgrading the firmware n designated devices, see Supprted devices. It can upgrade yur device using serial r USB, the exact methd depending n the device itself. It supprts autmatic filtering f cmpatible firmware images frm a directry f images. It bundles the latest cmpatible firmware files fr supprted devices with the tl. It includes bug fixes, and has added cmpatibility with mre devices. Nte: Fr UPSs with a SmartSlt, UPS firmware upgrades can als be carried ut using a UPS Netwrk Management Card. The detailed prcess is prvided in the Upgrading Firmware sectin f the UPS Netwrk Management Card 2 User s guide. The dcument can be lcated in the dcumentatin tab here. System Requirements The system requirements are as fllws: Operating systems: Micrsft Windws XP, Windws Vista, Windws 7, Windws 8, 8.1 r Windws 10. Cmputer screen graphics: Reslutin f 800x600 with 16-bit clrs (65536 clrs). Serial Cnnectin Use a serial cable t cnnect the cmputer t the device being updated, via a DE-9/DB-9 serial cmmunicatins prt. USB Cnnectin Use a USB cable t cnnect the cmputer t the device being updated, via a USB hst prt (type A). Nte: Yu shuld nt use serial t USB cnverters r ther devices t cnnect yur cmputer t the device being updated. Supprted devices All SMX, SMT, SMC and SRT devices are supprted, except SMX1500, SMX1000 and SMX750 with firmware versin 2.2. N SURT, SURTA, SURTD and SRC UPS mdels are supprted. In general: All units with an RJ45-10 pin cnnectr are supprted, except SURTD SKUs. All units with an LCD display are supprted, except SRC SKUs. Schneider Electric 2
Usage Ntes n the Upgrade AC utility pwer shuld be supplied t the device and the internal battery shuld remain cnnected thrughut the firmware upgrade. The upgrade prcess shuld nt get interrupted. It is recmmended that the Wizard runs n a laptp r n a pwer-prtected cmputer. If upgrading a UPS, d nt have the UPS supply pwer t the cmputer. Ensure that the cmputer des nt g t sleep, standby r hibernate due t user inactivity. While the Wizard allws a dwngrade, this is nt recmmended nr supprted by Schneider Electric, unless directed by a representative f the cmpany. Cmpatible firmware images fr varius devices are bundled with this sftware. Only use these cmpatible images r any apprved firmware upgrade files that were supplied by Schneider Electric. Files received by ther means may cause prblems with the device, pssibly resulting in permanent damage. Make sure that nly ne device is cnnected at a time t the cmputer fr the firmware upgrade. Ntes fr UPS devices nly SmartSlt cards shuld be remved frm the UPS befre a firmware upgrade f yur UPS. It is als recmmended that any equipment is discnnected frm the UPS. The UPS shuld nt be perfrming a runtime calibratin during the upgrade. In the case f updating the firmware directly after plugging in a USB cable t a UPS, please ensure the USB driver installatin is cmplete befre prceeding with the upgrade. Trubleshting N sftware that is cmmunicating with the device being upgraded shuld be running while using this Firmware Upgrade Wizard. Sme sftware runs as a service n Windws and shuld be stpped (example: PwerChute Business Editin). T access Windws services, launch "Services" frm the Windws Cntrl Panel in Administrative Tls r type "Services.msc" in the cmmand prmpt. The PwerChute Business Editin service is called 'APC PBE Agent'. Stp this service befre running the Wizard, and start it again afterwards. If yu receive a message frm the WinZip Self-Extractr indicating that it can't create an utput file, it may be that the Firmware Upgrade Wizard is already pen. Use Alt+Tab t check and clse the Wizard if yu are finished using it t reslve the issue. If yu have Bluetth r virtual COM prts, and yu want t d the upgrade using yur serial prt, yu shuld manually select the COM prt yu want t perfrm the upgrade with. (This des nt apply fr a firmware upgrade using the USB prt). The Firmware Upgrade Wizard will display an errr message if the UPS is nt capable f perfrming a firmware upgrade using the USB prt. The Firmware Upgrade Wizard uses its wn 32-bit Java envirnment. Sme perating systems might ask fr cnfirmatin t run this Java versin. Firmware Upgrade prcess: Step-by-Step Walkthrugh Step One Dwnlad the Firmware Upgrade Wizard frm the kbase # FA164737 at www.apc.cm/supprt, unzip, and launch the applicatin. Click Next T Begin Schneider Electric 4
Step Tw Agree t the License Agreement, and click Next. Step Three The Firmware Upgrade Wizard will nw search the cmmunicatins prt fr the UPS. The UPS is referred t n-screen as the device. Schneider Electric 5
If the device is cnnected via USB, the wizard will detect the device. (Step 3 Cntinued) Click Next and the Firmware Upgrade Wizard will display the current firmware revisin installed n the the device. Schneider Electric 6
Step Fur Click Brwse t select yur firmware file. The Wizard will display the Firmware File apprpriate fr yur device. If yu want t manually select a different file yu can brwse t the apprpriate lcatin. Select it, and click Open. Schneider Electric 7
(Step 4 Cntinued) The Firmware Upgrade Wizard is nw ready t begin the upgrade prcess. The Revisin Nte will give detailed infrmatin n the versin f the firmware (this is nt available fr all devices). Click Next. Schneider Electric 8
Step Five The first step in sending the upgrade file is turning ff the UPS. Make sure yur attached lad is prperly shut dwn, then click Next. The Firmware Upgrade Wizard will nw begin transfering the file t the device. This prcess will take apprximately 5 minutes. D nt turn ff pwer r remve the battery during this prcess. Sme devices may require a lnger time t cmplete the firmware upgrade. If a delay ccurs, yu will see an ptin t clse the wizard, while the device firmware cmpletes in the backgrund. Click Finish t exit the upgrade wizard befre cmpletin, r wait fr the cnfirmatin screen. Schneider Electric 11
Step Six The firmware upgrade is nw cmplete. Yu can verify the new updated revisin f yur device firmware. Click Finish and yu may put yur UPS and attached lad back int prductin. What yu shuld d if an upgrade ges wrng The Firmware Upgrade Wizard is a self-extracting executable that gets uncmpressed t the custmer's temprary flder, e.g. c:\temp. A lg file called FUW.lg gets created when the tl is run in the temprary flder. If yu have prblems with running the wizard, g t the temprary flder t access the lg file, which gives infrmatin n what ccurred when the Wizard executed. Fr security reasns this lg file is encrypted. If prblems ccurred running the Firmware Upgrade Wizard, please cntact Custmer Supprt and prvide this encrypted lg file t them fr prcessing. Schneider Electric 12
