U.S. and Canada Weekly Projections Weekend #12 March 17 March 19, 2017 03/16/2017 BEAST MEETS BEAST This week s beast may not be as physically big as last week s beast, but dollar the dollar value won t be anywhere near comparable. Beauty and the Beast will likely be at least twice the beast that Kong was last weekend. The other entry into the box office derby, The Belko Experiment will be hovering around the 3 to 5 million mark and not likely to make many sit up and take notice. Now we discuss our estimate on Beauty, which we detail in the pages following. Consider that tomorrow is St. Patrick s Day, or as we sometimes refer to it around here, National Green Beer Drinking Day. Will the celebration have any effect on Friday s gross? Maybe. We would estimate that family oriented films have an average ticket price of about 10 12% less than films that have broader appeal. So a 140 million dollar gross on a family film would likely be about 155 for a broader release. Finally, consider reviews and related web activity. Beauty and the Beast is trailing significantly on both counts compared to Jungle Book. So it is with these in mind that we think, despite record advance sales, we will probably be in the 140 million dollar range as opposed to more aggressive estimates that put it at 160 and above. Well really, that isn t so bad is it? Beauty and the Beast (3D) Distributor: Disney 3 Day Weekend BOR: 138 145 Total: 440 470 PG, 129 Synopsis: Belle (Emma Watson), a bright, beautiful and independent young woman is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast s hideous exterior and realize the kind Director: Bill Condon Cast: Dan Stevens, Emma Watson, Luke Evans Analysis: There is huge interest in this film biggest family presale ever. There are just a few things that stand in its way to achieving hall of fame status. First, the reviews. They are good, but unlike say Jungle Book, they are not great. Second, the Web activity is also good, but, again, not as good as Jungle Book, only about 62% of it. Third and this is kind of a wild card, St. Patrick's Day Friday. The last time this happened was in 2006, which isn't really a great metric since nowdays most films really open Thursday night and throw the numbers into Friday. But, consider that it is more or less the national drinking day. Will that have an affect on Friday's gross, and will it get moved to Saturday, national hangover day, or will it spread to later weeks? Last, ticket prices. This is likely to post lower than average ticket prices due to discounted child attendance. So our verdict? See the numbers above. In any sense it will be huge. Flixster/Rotten Tomatoes: 69% metacritic reviews: 66% 98% of 48,626 Belko Experiment, The Distributor: BH Tilt 3 Day Weekend BOR: 3 5 Total: 8 14 R, 88 Synopsis: In a twisted social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their highrise corporate office in Bogata, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed. Director: Greg McLean Cast: John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn Analysis: Exploding heads and mayhem. Reviews are average and once again we have St. Patrick to contend with.
