Appedix B Usig Shaped Ad Ushaped Keyig Workig with multiple sources i a video productio eviromet requires a mixig operatio to properly combie idepedet Video + Key elemets. This operatio is ormally foud i graphics systems, character geerators, DVE s (Digital Video Effects) ad switchers that are used for O-Air broadcasts. Traditioally, two differet methods of keyig have bee used i this eviromet: Shaped ad Ushaped Keyig. These two methods caot be used iterchageably ad ca sometimes lead to cofusio ad improper operatio. I the broadcast eviromet, video ad key sigals are ormally trasported o two separate sigals. The terms Shaped ad Ushaped refer to how a separate key sigal is used i cojuctio with a associated video (or fill) sigal to represet a oopaque source. The followig topics provide more iformatio about shaped ad ushaped compositig: Shaped Keyig Ushaped Keyig Mathematical Equatios Compariso Matrix

Appedix B Usig Shaped Ad Ushaped Keyig Shaped Keyig Shaped refers to a video ad key pair that has the key preapplied (or premultiplied) to the video sigal. This is most apparet o objects with a soft, semi-trasparet border as show i the followig illustratio. Shaped Video Sigal Shaped Key Sigal I this example, the letter O has a soft border that is apparet o both the video ad key sigals. Oce this graphic is keyed, the backgroud image shows through the semitrasparet border as show i the followig illustratio. Keyed Result 148

Ushaped Keyig Ushaped Keyig Ushaped refers to a video ad key pair that does ot have the key preapplied to the video. I this case, all trasparecy is represeted by the key sigal. The followig illustratio shows the same example i the ushaped eviromet. Ushaped Video Sigal Ushaped Key Sigal Oce this graphic is keyed, the backgroud image shows through the semitrasparet border just as i the shaped case, as show i the followig illustratio. Keyed Result 149

Appedix B Usig Shaped Ad Ushaped Keyig Mathematical Equatios A keyer or switcher that combies two keyed sources must take ito accout their formats (shaped or ushaped). Two distict mathematical fuctios are used depedig o the format of the keyed iputs. For the mathematically iclied, the equatios are provided below. Ushaped Keyig uses the followig equatios for mixig two Video + Key sources: K out = K foregroud + K backgroud * (1 K foregroud ) V out = V foregroud * K X + V backgroud * (1 K X ) where K X = (K foregroud - K foregroud *K backgroud ) / K out Shaped Keyig uses the followig equatios for mixig two Video + Key sources: K out = K foregroud + K backgroud * (1 K foregroud ) V out = V foregroud + V backgroud * (1 K foregroud ) While the Key equatio is the same i both cases, it is clear that the Video equatio is much simpler for Shaped Keyig tha for Ushaped. Havig the Key preapplied to the Video greatly reduces the computatios required produce the combied result. It is for this reaso that shaped keyig has become stadard i the world of graphics ad multilayer compositig. 150

Compariso Matrix Compariso Matrix Due to the simplified ature of workig with multiple layers, graphics systems have relied o Shaped keyig for all compositig fuctios. Coversely, live DVE systems have traditioally used ushaped keyig as applyig effects to full scree video is easier i this domai. The compariso matrix below summarizes some of the mai differeces betwee workig i the shaped ad ushaped domai. Compariso Matrix Fuctio Shaped Ushaped Keyig Process Additive (Simple). Multiplicative (More complex). Preview Stadardizatio Productio Switches Previewig video properly displays trasparecy properties. Most graphics, compositig, ad computer based systems use Shaped keyig processes. Most moder switchers support Shaped keyig. However, some older aalog switchers oly support Ushaped keyig. Previewig video does ot display trasparecy properties (o soft borders). N/A Most switchers support Ushaped keyig. 151

Appedix C Usig SQL with Thuder Thuder clip servers ad Lightig still stores iclude a optio to use a SQL server with ODBC databases. The advatages of usig this optio might ot be clearly uderstood by most users. ODBC allows multiple users to access a sigle database seamlessly ad trasparetly with added stability. This sectio attempts to clarify these issues, i additio to presetig step-by-step istructios for settig up a SQL server. For iformatio o eablig the ODBC optio ad settig up ODBC databases o a Thuder or Lightig, see the Avid Thuder Products User s Guide. Almost all of the iformatio preseted here is equally applicable to Lightig, which stores stills, or Thuder, which ca store either clips or stills. However, for clarity, the text refers to Thuder with referece to either system ad uses the term clip with referece to clips or stills. The followig sectios are icluded: Backgroud Settig up the SQL Server

Appedix C Usig SQL with Thuder Backgroud Thuder uses databases for storig clips ad stills. These databases cotai iformatio for each clip icludig duratio, I ad Out poits, format, the media ID, locatio of the proxy, ad more. This data is easily accessed from the local machie, that is, the machie upo which the database resides. I additio, Thuder adheres to Avid s BroadNet protocol, allowig other machies o the etwork access to its databases. Avid also offers a software-oly optio, Thuder Browse, which is used to access Thuder databases remotely from a stadard etworked PC. If these other machies are give the requisite permissios, they ca modify, delete, or write to the Thuder database. While the ative database format works well i cofiguratios where a relatively small umber of systems are accessig the data, it was ot desiged for the icreasigly complex etworks with umerous systems requirig simultaeous access. I these large etwork cofiguratios, a ODBC database might be a better alterative. This is largely due to the way that databases allow users to modify their cotets. Databases have to deal with a fudametal issue i ay setup where more tha oe system is allowed cocurret access to its data. The issue is that both systems might be accessig the same data, ad oe might chage the data while the other is still tryig to read it. At best, this results i iaccurate data, ad at worst, system istability. Almost all databases have some protectio built i to prevet agaist such a occurrece, usually i the form of a lock. Whe oe system is writig data, it sets a lock i the database. If aother system tries to access that data, it is deied permissio locked out util the first system releases the lock, usually after it has fiished its modificatios. The form ad extet of the lock dictates how much access is allowed to ay other system while the lock is i place. The method that ative Thuder databases uses is sigularly efficiet; it locks the whole database whe ay request is made to write to it. This is effective i esurig that all data is the same for ayoe desirig access oce the lock is released. It meas, however, that other users are preveted from performig maipulatios of other parts of the database. For example, the I-poit of clip #37 i a database amed Local News might eed to be adjusted. While this chage is beig writte back to the database, the whole Local News database is locked, prevetig ay other user from modifyig ay other clip, ot just clip #37. Thuder ca make chages quickly, ad the locked time is usually ot perceptible. However, if oe system is chagig large amouts of data at a time, this ca result i log delays betwee accesses. The followig topics provide more iformatio o backgroud: Terms to Kow o page 155 How ODBC ad SQL Improve Access for Thuder o page 156 154

Backgroud Terms to Kow Prior to settig up a SQL server, there are some terms that you should kow regardig relatioal databases, SQL servers, ad ODBC. The followig topics provide more iformatio o the terms you eed to kow before settig up a SQL server. Relatioal Databases o page 155 ODBC o page 155 SQL o page 155 Relatioal Databases ODBC SQL Relatioal databases are sets of related iformatio stored i tables. These tables ca be liked together, ad may differet tables ca be used i a sigle database. A search for data ca be made i a sigle table or across tables, ad ca be sorted based o ay of the idividual characteristics of the results. These databases are maaged by database maagemet systems (DBMSs), which ca be purchased from various compaies: Oracle, IBM, Sybase, Microsoft, Iformix, ad others. This sectio focuses o Microsoft s SQL Server, as Thuder ad Lightig are Widows applicatios. ODBC stads for Ope Database Coectivity ad is a stadard that was developed by Microsoft Corporatio for commuicatio with databases. It permits a search across a etire etwork at oe time, rather tha a oe-by-oe search of idividual servers. It also allows software to maage or access a database to meet a specific eed. Databases i Thuder ca be set up that utilize this ability. SQL, geerally proouced sequel, stads for Structured Query Laguage. SQL is the laguage used to retrieve ad process data from a relatioal database. A SQL server is a database maagemet system that stores a relatioal database ad uses SQL to add data to or retrieve data from the database. 155

Appedix C Usig SQL with Thuder How ODBC ad SQL Improve Access for Thuder SQL ad ODBC are a cofiguratio optio for Thuder. The basic setup etails a separate computer ruig Microsoft SQL Server, ad at least oe database o a Thuder created usig ODBC. A differet database resides o the SQL server. This is a relatioal database ad cotais oly metadata: details about the clips ad stills, ot the actual files themselves. The actual data the clips, stills ad proxies are still kept o the Thuder hard drives. The advatage to this cofiguratio is realized i access time ad lockig. Each separate parameter of every etry i a Thuder database is retaied i a idividual field i a table i the SQL database. Each I-poit, Out-poit, duratio, media ID, title, descriptio, ad so o, is stored idepedetly. Whe ay of these fields is goig to be chaged, oly that field is locked. Not eve other fields for that clip are locked. So, i the Local News database example above, whe the I-poit of clip #37 is beig modified, ot oly ca other clips i the Local News database be modified, but eve the Out-poit of clip #37 could be adjusted. Because oly metadata is stored o the SQL server, the time required to make the modificatios is ot ay greater. This lockig system decreases the chaces of other systems ot beig able to make chages due to beig locked out, ad icreases the overall system stability. Oe additioal advatage to usig SQL ad ODBC databases is if more tha oe Thuder database has bee set up to use ODBC, a search ca be made across all the Thuder ODBC databases o a etire etwork at oe time, rather tha a oe-by-oe search of idividual servers. For iformatio o eablig the ODBC optio ad settig up ODBC databases o a Thuder or Lightig, also see the Avid Thuder Products User s Guide. Settig up the SQL Server This topic cotais iformatio o how to perform each of the ecessary steps to correctly itegrate SQL ad ODBC ito a existig system.
