Chapter 3 Settig Up ad Turig O Your System Settig Up Your System Before istallig your system i its permaet locatio (such as i a rack), Avid recommeds that you test ad properly cofigure your system. To set up your system, you do the followig: Istall the System drive ad Media drives Istall the mouse, keyboard, VGA moitor, ad AC power cords Coect the Software Applicatio key (USB dogle) Istallig the System Drive ad Media Drives Before istallig the System ad Media drives, make sure you wear a ati-static strap whe hadlig the drives. The lift out portio of the shippig case cotais a white box cotaiig the system drives ad oe or more media drives (depedig o the system ad model you ordered). For more iformatio, see the table i Verifyig Compoets o page 24. Each System/Media Drive (white) box has a copy of the system serial umber. This serial umber matches the serial umber o the associated system chassis. Drives should ot be swapped betwee systems to esure that the system tested at the factory is the same system you are assemblig at your site. To istall the System drive ad Media drives: 1. Isert the System hard drive ito the frot pael of the workstatio by doig the followig: a. Alig the System drive so that it properly slides ito the drive bay that is labelled System. b. Push the System drive so that it completely slides ito the bay. This coects the drive to its coectors at the back of the bay. c. Firmly press the drive ito the bay. d. Use a screwdriver to securely tighte the thumbscrews. Do ot overtighte the thumbscrews. 2. Isert the Media hard drives ito their respective drive bays o the frot pael of the workstatio by doig the followig: a. Alig the Media drive so that it properly slides ito the drive bay that is labelled Media 1. b. Push the Media drive so that it completely slides ito the bay. For iformatio o coectig your mouse, keyboard, ad VGA moitor through a KVM exteder, see Attachig the VGA, Mouse, ad Keyboard Usig the Avocet Exteders o page 80. To attach the mouse, keyboard, VGA moitor ad AC power cords: 1. Attach the mouse ad keyboard to the PS2 coectios o the back pael of the workstatio. This is the resposibility of the ed user who must agree to the licesig of Widows with Microsoft Widows XP software istalled. Accept the licese agreemet by clickig Yes, I accept. 4. Click Next.

Chapter 4 Activatig Widows XP The product key cofirmatio widow opes. 5. Type the 25 characters that make up the product key umber for the workstatio ad the click Next. The licese umber is case sesitive. The alphaumeric characters that make the product key ca be foud o the frot pael of the workstatio. If the frot pael cover is o the frot of the workstatio, remove the pael cover. The product key sticker is glued oto the frot pael of the workstatio. 6. If you are prompted by a Help protect your PC widow for automatic Widows updates, select Not Right Now. 7. Click Next. A widow promptig for the ame of the computer opes. 8. Type the ame of the computer ad click Next. The default ame is the Serial Number of the system. Oly the characters A-Z, the umbers 0-9, ad hyphes ca be used. Leave the computer descriptio field blak. If the workstatio is coected to a etwork, the ame give to the machie (ad the descriptio if oe is give) opes o the etwork. Whe Next is clicked, the Admiistrator password widow opes. 9. Do ot eter a Admiistrator password. Click Next. A widow askig for the ame of the workstatio users opes. The password has already bee cofigured durig the factory-imagig process. The Admiistrator password is avid. The password caot be chaged at this poit. If you type i a differet password, it will be igored. 10. Whe you are prompted about the computer beig a part of a domai, select No. 11. Click Next. 12. Whe you are prompted about how the computer coects to the Iteret, click the Skip butto. Skip is located at the bottom-right side of the widow. A Ready to activate Widows widow opes. 13. Chapter 6 Backig Up Your Workstatio Your system ow cotais the cofigured operatig system ad the Avid applicatio. This chapter describes iformatio o how to back up your workstatio. Because a restore DVD is ot supplied, you eed to perform the backup procedures to make sure you ca restore your system if ecessary. Avid recommeds that you back up your workstatio before istallig ay software. Avid provides a program, Acrois True Image, for your use as a tool to perform backups ad restores if eeded. Avid recommeds that you use the Acrois program, or aother program selected by your IT departmet, to back up the workstatio o a regular basis. Periodic backups should be made of both the System drive ad the Media drives. This helps to isure that the workstatio ca be brought back olie quickly if oe of the drives should fail ad eed to be replaced. Periodic backups also provide a quick way to recover files that are somehow corrupted or iadvertetly deleted. Spare hard drives for the workstatio should be stored at the facility where the workstatio is beig used. Chapter 6 Backig Up Your Workstatio Creatig a C: Drive System Image ad Storig it o the E: Partitio Oce you have loaded your system applicatio oto the system disk, you should create a image of the system drive s C: partitio ad place it oto the E: partitio of the media drives usig Acrois True Image. The followig procedure explais how to create a image of your system drive, usig the Acrois True Image software, ad store the image o the E: partitio of your drive. The image should be stored with high compressio so the size of the file is ot too large. To create ad store a C: drive system image o the E: partitio: 1. Select Start > Programs > Acrois > True Image > Acrois True Image OEM editio. The OEM Editio Widow opes. 2. Click No Thaks. The Applicatio Widow opes. 3. Double-click the Create Image ico. 4. Click Next. 5. Select the C: partitio as the partitio you wish to create a image for, ad click Next. A widow opes askig where you wat to store the created image. 6. Do oe of the followig: t Click Proceed if correct. t Click Back to chage iformatio, ad retur to this locatio whe complete ad click Proceed whe correct. The image creatio starts. Avid recommeds that you DO NOT use the system while the applicatio is creatig ad storig the image because you could lose data. It might take up to 5 miutes for the image to be created. 15. Click Ok, ad close the applicatio. You ca also use the same procedure to back up the complete system disk (partitios C: ad D:) i case the complete disk is uusable. If you decide to do this, Avid recommeds that you store both the C: partitio ad the complete disks (partitios C: ad D:) so you ca choose betwee what images you eed to restore. Creatig a Bootable CD You should ow use the Acrois software to create a bootable CD cotaiig the Acrois True Image software. This is a bootable CD that boots to the Acrois software o a CD. You the use the Acrois software to recreate the image stored previously o aother drive. To create a bootable CD image with Acrois True Image software: 1. Place a blak CD ito the CD drive. 2. Select Start > Programs > Acrois > True Image > Bootable Rescue Media Builder. A Welcome Widow opes. 77

Chapter 7 Rack Moutig ad Attachig Peripherals to Your System Attachig the Rack Ears ad Frot Pael Cover The rack ears are provided i a plastic bag alog with the power cables. This bag cotais the followig: 2 rack ears 4 plastic tabs for moutig the frot cover 4 screws for moutig the rack ears to the side of the chassis To attach the rack ears ad frot pael cover: 1. Attach the rack ears ad plastic tabs to the side of the system to secure the frot pael cover. 2. Attach the frot bezel (supplied) to the frot of the workstatio. The frot bezel is the large plastic cover that has the product ame (Deko 1000, Deko 3000, DekoCast, Thuder) that idetifies your system type. Attachig the Rack Rails Coolig The ext step is to attach the iteral rack rails to the chassis. Whe rack moutig, it is recommeded that you allow access to the top of the uit with power ad cotrol durig troubleshootig. To measure the proper distace to allow access, exted the system out o the rack slides to the poit where you ca remove the top of the uit. This is the legth of cable required to remai coected for a proper service loop. To attach the rack rails, refer to the istructios that came with your rack rails. It is recommeded that for proper coolig you leave a sigle rack uit of space betwee the top ad bottom of the uit. Attachig the VGA, Mouse, ad Keyboard Usig the Avocet Exteders Oce your OAG chassis is placed i a rack, you most likely will eed to use a Avocet exteder to coect your VGA, mouse, ad keyboard. For iformatio o coectig the VGA, mouse ad keyboard usig a KVM exteder (such as Avocet), see the maufacturer s istructios. 80

Rack Moutig the Chassis The mouse ad keyboard coectios o the workstatio are show i USB Port # 1 Locatio Diagram o page 45. If you received a Fast Actio Keyboard (FAK) as part of your Deko order, you wat to istall that istead of the Stadard keyboard (SK). For more iformatio, see Istallig the FastActio Keyboard o page 81. Istallig the FastActio Keyboard If you ordered the FastActio Keyboard (FAK), you should ow istall the software ad hardware for it. See the Avid Deko Products User s Guide for iformatio o usig the FAK. The FAK supports the use of may laguages used with Widows operatig system. If you add a laguage to your system, you might eed to reistall the FAK driver. The applicatio software displays the firmware versio i the FAK display whe it powers up. The miimum firmware versio is 1.6. To istall the FastActio Keyboard: 1. Make sure the Deko applicatio is ot ruig. 2. Isert the FAK driver CD that ships with the FAK. The FAK Istaller automatically starts. 3. Click Next ad follow the istructios o the scree. If you are istallig the driver o a Widows XP system, you will be prompted with a message statig that the software you are istallig has ot passed Widows Logo testig to verify its compatibility with Widows XP. Click Cotiue Ayway. This dialog box might be hidde behid the Istaller widow. Move the widow aside to see the message. 4. Whe asked if you wat to restart your system, click Yes. 5. Coect the FAK to the keyboard port at the rear of the system. 6. Coect the FAK power supply to the keyboard. 7. Coect the AC power cord to the power supply ad the wall. 8. Lauch the Deko applicatio by clickig the Deko ico o your desktop. If a Licese agreemet dialog box opes, click I Accept. The Avid Deko applicatio opes. 9. Coectig the Serial Cable Automatio uses RS-232 commuicatio betwee the serial port of the system ad the serial port of the Newsroom Computer System. A stadard ie-pi ull modem cable ca be used to coect the two systems. RS-232 serial cables are always female to female. To coect the serial cable: 1. (Optio) If makig your ow cable, coect the followig pis (the system oly uses three of the ie wires.): - 2 to 3-3 to 2-5 to 5 2. Coect oe ed of the cable to the desired port of the Newsroom Computer System, ad the other ed to COM Port 1 o the rear of the workstatio. RS-232 is rated for fifty feet. For loger rus, you eed to use a RS-422 coverter ad cable. Iexpesive coverters from RS-232 ad RS-422 are readily available. The advatage of RS-422 is that you ca have a loger distace betwee the system ad your NCS. RS-422 is good for up to 1,000 feet. Most automatio systems ru serial commuicatios at: 9600 baud 8 bits No Parity Oe stop bit 96

Usig COM ad GPI Port Piouts The serial protocol of your system ad the automatio system must match. To check or set the commuicatio ports of your system: 1. Press Ctrl+Esc to brig up the meu bar of the system. 2. Click the Start butto, ad select Settigs > Cotrol Pael. 3. Double-click Ports to display the selectio of serial ports (usually COM1). The Ports widow opes. 4. Double-click the port to which you coected the serial cable. The settigs dialog box opes. 5. Chage the settigs as eeded, to match those of the Newsroom Automatio system. 6. Click OK to accept the chages i the settigs dialog box, the click Close i the Ports widow. Eablig Deko Automatio You oly eed to perform these steps oce. Oce you save the settigs, your system is eabled for automatio. To eable Deko automatio: 1. Start the Deko applicatio from the desktop. 2. Select View > Automatio. The Automatio dialog box opes at the bottom of the scree. 3. I the Port text box, type the Commuicatios port that system is usig, most ofte COM1. Be sure to type the COM port ame as oe word, with o spaces. 4. I the Type field, select I.I.I. (for Itelliget Iterface). 5. I the ID text box, if you have oly oe system, type 1. With multiple machies, each machie eeds its ow separate Machie ID. 6. I the Default Doc area, select either Program or Preview to decide which scree receives your data. The Newsroom Automatio system ca override this default. 7. Select Automatio Eabled. A successful coectio shows a message such as: Server created through \\.\COM1 If you do ot see this message, cotact Customer Support. 8. To save settigs, select Optios > Save Settigs Now. Your Deko system is ow set up for Automatio. 97

A GPI iput ca be selected from the Deko Sequecer to trigger a graphics sequece maually. A GPI output ca be set from a Deko macro commad to trigger a exteral device. For details o how to use GPIs withi the Deko applicatio, see the Avid Deko Products User s Guide provided with your system. The RS-232 port o the rear of your Deko 3000 C SD/HD/HY system (COM Port 1) ca be repurposed to provide a sigle GPI iput ad output. Usig COM ad GPI Port Piouts GPI Output for Deko Systems Pi 7 o the RS-232 coector pulses high (for approximately 100 millisecods) whe a GPI output commad is issued from the Deko applicatio. This ca be used to trigger a exteral device that is expectig a pulse to trigger a evet from the Deko. For a exteral device that does ot trigger from a short pulse, but requires a cotact closure, the custom circuit show i the followig illustratio ca be used. This circuit coverts the pulse o Pi 7 ito a cotact closure to properly trigger devices that expect a somewhat more traditioal GPI (for example, Avid s Thuder Clip Server). Pi 5 GPI OUT- (GROUND) Pi 7 GPI OUT+ Usig GPI Iput ad Output Coectios for Thuder Systems GPIs ca be used to iterface a Thuder workstatio with peripheral devices that are capable of sedig ad receivig GPI electroic pulses. That is, if a exteral device such as a automatio system is coected to the Thuder system s GPI port ad remote cotrol is eabled (by meas of the Eable GPI Trigger meu item withi the Thuder software), electroic pulses from that exteral device ca cotrol specific fuctios of the Thuder workstatio. Although this display works well for displayig graphics, it is ot ideal for checkig video outputs or iputs o sigle chael or dual chael systems. Because of this, ew server cotrol protocols ca be supported by the additio of a ew.dll without requirig a ew versio of Thuder. A sigle Thuder system ca access ad cotrol other Thuder systems all at the same time. Clip server IDs defie the actual machie ad must remai the same o every Thuder workstatio. If two differet Thuder systems ca cotrol a third, the third Thuder s ID must be the same the o other two. With this arragemet, the two cotrollig Thuder systems each require their ow idividual server ID. The serial ports ad iput chaels ca differ for each workstatio. For istace, the same chael from a give Thuder ca be coected to iput chael 2 ( Hdwr. 2 ) o oe Thuder workstatio ad iput chael 1 ( Hdwr. 1 ) o a differet workstatio. As log as the Server ID is the same, each Thuder coected to this oe will play clips properly. To cofigure clip servers: 1. Select File > Prefereces > Cofigure Clip Servers. Chapter 10 Maitaiig Your System Iflexio I/O Diagostic Utility Overview The Iflexio Iput/Output (I/O) Diagostic software test utility provides a rage of tests if you, or Avid Customer Support, suspect that there is a problem with the SD/HD Video boards i a workstatio. The procedure for performig the Iflexio I-O Diagostic Test should be used o both SD ad HD systems. For Hybrid systems, chage your video stadard to the oe you wat to test (SD or HD), ad the ru the test. Ru this test before cotactig Customer Support. If a SD/HD Video board is the problem, dowtime is kept to a miimum sice the problem is quickly idetified. This procedure should be used o both SD ad HD systems. For Hybrid (HY) systems, chage your Video Stadard to the oe you wat to test (SD or HD), ad the ru the Iflexio I-O Diagostic test. The Iflexio I-O Diagostic test is a automatic test that rus a list of tests o the SD/HD video board util either a error is detected, or util all the tests are successfully completed. This test should be ru before cotactig Customer Support. The followig procedure, icludig the scree examples was documeted from the HD diagostic test perspective. However, the steps for ruig the SD test are exactly the same, with the exceptio of the AES Audio test. AES is ot supported for SD video boards. Ruig the Iflexio I-O Diagostic Test Utility To ru the Iflexio I-O Diagostic test utility i automatic mode: 1. Tur o the Workstatio. Oly the Widows OS should be ruig. If ay other programs are ruig o the workstatio, exit those programs. If your workstatio is corrupted so that it does ot start whe tured o, cotact Avid Techical Support. If there are two VGA displays, make sure that the first VGA is set to 1024x768 ad the secod VGA is set to 1920x1096. Otherwise, false failures might occur whe you ru the HD diagostic. 2. Start the Iflexio I/O Diagostic software program by doig the followig: a. Navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\AvidSupport\Diags. b. Ruig Automatic Tests o SD/HD Video Boards 3. For two chael systems, you are prompted to select which board you wat to ru this test for. You should ru this test o the board that you suspect is failig. t If you thik Chael A or Chael 1 is the failed chael, select the BOARD_1 optio from the Automatic Tests list. t If you thik Chael B or Chael 2 is the failed chael, select the BOARD_0 optio from the Automatic Tests list. 4. DVI Test -- This test checks that the SD/HD Video board s Digital Visual Iterface is properly fuctioig. The Digital Visual Iterface gives the SD/HD Video board the ability to covert a aalog video sigal to a digital video sigal for moitors with the ability to hadle digital sigals. Upper Board Iterface Test -- This test loops a sigal out of the upper SDI portio of the SD/HD Video board ad checks that the sigal comes back ito the board exactly the same. These databases cotai iformatio for each clip icludig duratio, I ad Out poits, format, the media ID, locatio of the proxy, ad more. This data is easily accessed from the local machie, that is, the machie upo which the database resides. I additio, Thuder adheres to Avid s BroadNet protocol, allowig other machies o the etwork access to its databases. Avid also offers a software-oly optio, Thuder Browse, which is used to access Thuder databases remotely from a stadard etworked PC. If these other machies are give the requisite permissios, they ca modify, delete, or write to the Thuder database. While the ative database format works well i cofiguratios where a relatively small umber of systems are accessig the data, it was ot desiged for the icreasigly complex etworks with umerous systems requirig simultaeous access. I these large etwork cofiguratios, a ODBC database might be a better alterative. This is largely due to the way that databases allow users to modify their cotets. Databases have to deal with a fudametal issue i ay setup where more tha oe system is allowed cocurret access to its data. The issue is that both systems might be accessig the same data, ad oe might chage the data while the other is still tryig to read it. At best, this results i iaccurate data, ad at worst, system istability. Almost all databases have some protectio built i to prevet agaist such a occurrece, usually i the form of a lock. Whe oe system is writig data, it sets a lock i the database. If aother system tries to access that data, it is deied permissio locked out util the first system releases the lock, usually after it has fiished its modificatios. The form ad extet of the lock dictates how much access is allowed to ay other system while the lock is i place. The method that ative Thuder databases uses is sigularly efficiet; it locks the whole database whe ay request is made to write to it. This is effective i esurig that all data is the same for ayoe desirig access oce the lock is released. It meas, however, that other users are preveted from performig maipulatios of other parts of the database. For example, the I-poit of clip #37 i a database amed Local News might eed to be adjusted. While this chage is beig writte back to the database, the whole Local News database is locked, prevetig ay other user from modifyig ay other clip, ot just clip #37. The basic setup etails a separate computer ruig Microsoft SQL Server, ad at least oe database o a Thuder created usig ODBC. A differet database resides o the SQL server. This is a relatioal database ad cotais oly metadata: details about the clips ad stills, ot the actual files themselves. The actual data the clips, stills ad proxies are still kept o the Thuder hard drives. The advatage to this cofiguratio is realized i access time ad lockig. Each separate parameter of every etry i a Thuder database is retaied i a idividual field i a table i the SQL database. Each I-poit, Out-poit, duratio, media ID, title, descriptio, ad so o, is stored idepedetly. Whe ay of these fields is goig to be chaged, oly that field is locked. Not eve other fields for that clip are locked. So, i the Local News database example above, whe the I-poit of clip #37 is beig modified, ot oly ca other clips i the Local News database be modified, but eve the Out-poit of clip #37 could be adjusted. Because oly metadata is stored o the SQL server, the time required to make the modificatios is ot ay greater. This lockig system decreases the chaces of other systems ot beig able to make chages due to beig locked out, ad icreases the overall system stability.
