Welcome to your Quick Start Guide

Charge your NOOKcolor 1 You must fully charge your NOOKcolor before using it the first time. Plug your NOOKcolor into a wall outlet using the Power Adapter and USB Cable included with your NOOKcolor. You can use your NOOKcolor while it charges. The charging indicator light on the USB cable will show orange when charging and will turn green when the battery is full. The indicator will only light up when connected to the NOOKcolor power adapter and cable. It takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge your NOOKcolor. Wall Outlet Charging Indicator Light USB Cable Power Adapter NOTE: To charge your NOOKcolor, you must plug it into a wall outlet. Your NOOKcolor will not charge when connected to a computer.

2 Get to know your NOOKcolor Power Button Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds to turn your NOOKcolor on or off. Headphone Jack (3.5mm) Volume Buttons VividView Color Touchscreen Your NOOKcolor features a high-resolution, color touchscreen for easy navigation and page turns. microsd Memory Card Slot On the back of your NOOKcolor, lift the rubber flap with the NOOK logo for the microsd memory card slot, which allows you to increase the storage capacity of your NOOKcolor. Home Button This NOOK symbol on the bottom face of the device is a button. Press it to wake up your device from sleep mode (turn the display on). When the device is on, pressing the Home Button will take you back to the Home Screen. microusb Port Port for charging and connecting to a computer. Unlock your NOOKcolor Slide the NOOK icon to the right to unlock your NOOKcolor.

Set up: turning on your NOOKcolor for the first time 3 1. Watch a Quick Video The first time you turn on your NOOKcolor, there is a brief video to help you with the set-up and registration process of your NOOKcolor. 2. Read and Accept the Terms of Service When the video has finished, your NOOKcolor displays its Terms of Service. Read the terms. To accept them, tap Accept. 3. Select your Time Zone Tap on your time zone (for example, Eastern Standard Time). Then tap Next. 4. Connect to a Wi-Fi network To register your NOOKcolor and to purchase and download books and periodicals, you need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network. 5. Register your NOOKcolor You must register your NOOKcolor to your BN.com account. This gives you access to any books in your Barnes & Noble library and allows you to shop for new books, magazines, and newspapers on your NOOKcolor. If you already have a BN.com account: 1. Tap the Sign In button. 2. Enter the email address and password for your account. 3. Tap Submit. If you do not yet have a BN.com account: 1. Tap the Create an Account button. 2. Fill in the form with your name, email, password, and so on. 3. Tap Submit. That s it. You ve registered your NOOKcolor. You re ready to read books, magazines, and newspapers, and to shop in the NOOK store.

Home screen 4 Home Screen You can get to the Home Screen at any time by pressing the Home Button. Quick Nav Arrow Tap the white Quick Nav Arrow to make the Quick Nav Bar appear or disappear. Quick Nav Bar Tap the icons in the Quick Nav Bar to open various features on your NOOKcolor, such as library, shop, search, extras, web, and settings. Reading Now At the top of the Home Screen, you ll find a link to whatever book or periodical you ve most recently been reading. You ll also find a pull-down menu listing other books, periodicals, and files you have recently opened. Daily Shelf The Daily Shelf holds books, magazines, and newspapers that you have recently received (for example, purchased, downloaded, or borrowed). The Daily Shelf runs left to right with the newest item on the left. You can move back and forth through the Daily Shelf by swiping your finger across its contents. Status Bar The Status Bar includes the time and icons for battery status, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a shortcut to reading now.

Touch gestures 5 Use the following gestures to navigate on your NOOKcolor. Tap Touch your fingertip quickly to the screen, as though you were tapping a key on a keyboard. Press & Hold Touch your finger to the screen and hold it there for about 2 seconds. In many situations, pressing and holding will pop open a menu. Drag Press and hold on an object and slide it to another location on the screen.

Touch gestures cont. 5cont. Scroll Slide your finger up or down the screen to scroll through a list displaying a scrollbar; it is a vertical swipe. Swipe Glide your finger across the screen, usually to the left or the right. Pinch and Zoom Place two fingers typically your thumb and forefinger about an inch apart on the screen. Slide them together to pinch in. In most situations, pinching in zooms out an image or shrinks it. Slide your fingers apart to pinch out. In most situations, pinching out zooms in on an image. The area between your fingers appears larger on the screen.

Start reading 6 Find a book You ll find books, magazines, and newspapers on the Daily Shelf of the Home Screen. You ll also find them in your library. To navigate to the library, tap the white Quick Nav Arrow in the Status Bar to display the Quick Nav Bar. Then tap the library icon in the bar. Open a book To open a book, tap on its cover. Turn pages To turn the page of a book, tap on the right edge of the screen. To go back a page, tap on the left edge of the screen. Alternatively, you can swipe from right to left to turn to the next page, and swipe from left to right to turn back to the previous page. Reading tools To personalize your reading experience, such as adjusting the text size or font style in the book you're reading, tap the center of the page to display your Reading Tools. The Reading Tools let you: browse the table of contents and keep notes search for words or phrases share quotes and recommendations with friends on Facebook, Twitter, and email adjust text size, font style, line spacing, and other aspects of the page adjust the brightness of the screen To change the font size, tap the text icon in the Reading Tools. When you re finished, tap the top of the page to make the Reading Tools disappear.

Discover new favorites 7 Shopping is fun and easy on your NOOKcolor. Shop at the NOOK store To visit the NOOK store: 1. Tap the Quick Nav Arrow in the Status Bar to display the Quick Nav Bar. 2. Tap the shop icon. On the Store Front, swipe left and right to read about special offers. Browse bestseller lists and categories To see recommendations, bestseller lists, and books, magazines, and newspapers sorted by category, tap the Browse button in the lower corner of the NOOK store. Search the store Tap in the search field to display an on-screen keyboard so you can enter a title, author name, or topic for searching. Make a purchase with the tap of your finger Once your BN.com account is set up with a valid credit card, you can make purchases with the tap of your finger. Just tap on the Buy button next to the book or periodical you want. Your NOOKcolor will ask you to confirm that you want to make the purchase. Tap Confirm. Your NOOKcolor downloads the book or periodical to your Daily Shelf and your library automatically.
