Q U A L I T Y PR I NT I NG COMPANY A Guide to InSite and Automated Processing

Quality Printing s guidelines for ensuring your documents are free of issues that may occur during file processing. PDF Specifications and Guidelines for Prinergy Preflight Quark Checklist 6

The following is a checklist, or guidelines of file standards, to follow to ensure that your documents are free of issues that may arise during the processing of your files. Document Setup Fonts: When using Quark Xpress, avoid using style attributes (italics, bold, etc.). Instead, choose the bold or italic version of that font directly from the font list. During the automated Preflight process, if any of these artificial style attributes are used, the document will be flagged with a warning. A warning will also show up if a Multi-Master or City font is used. This does not mean that your file will be rejected, but problems may occur. If print-ready PDFs are supplied, and alterations are requested to be made by Quality Printing, you may be required to supply the fonts. Document Layout: In Quark, InDesign and Illustrator the document page size should be the same dimensions as the trim size of the publication. At least 1/8 bleeds are required beyond the trim marks. If your page layout is created in Photoshop, the canvas size should be the final trim size + 1/4. For example, if the final trim size is 8.5 x 11 the canvas size in Photoshop should be 8.75 x 11.25. Then images and artwork that require bleed should be extended the extra 1/8. Insert blank pages where they would appear in the finished document to keep all ODD numbered pages as right-handed pages and EVEN numbered pages as left-handed pages. If the job will parallel or accordian fold, contact your Quality Printing Project Manager to determine short panel size and final spread size. Color: Avoid using RGB, Callibrated Gray, Callibrated RGB, LAB and ICC Based colors in your artwork wherever possible. If using one of these color spaces cannot be avoided, Quality Printing can convert that color space to CMYK. However, slight shifts in color may occur. When using Spot Colors in your document and artwork, make sure that the name of that Spot Color is consistent throughout. This includes capitalization, spaces and suffixes. If this cannot be avoided, Quality Printing can merge these colors during the refine process. Also, avoid using a Spot Color that has an alternative color space other than CMYK or Gray. Artwork: Placed images should be 300 dpi at their placed size in your document. Proper output requires proper setup. If your image is 300 dpi, but you blow it up to 400% in your layout program, the dpi drops to 75 dpi. Also note that opening a 72 dpi image in Photoshop and simply bumping up the dpi to 300 does not actually increase the quality of the file. Convert graphics from RGB to CMYK. The use of transfer curves and halftone transfer curves is not recommended.

Artwork Cont: When saving your artwork in Illustrator or Photoshop, please follow the instructions below. Saving Photoshop eps files: Saving Photoshop tif files: Saving Illustrator files: Deselect Embed Color Profile Preview: Macintosh (8-bits/pixel) Encoding: Binary Deselect all eps options Deselect Embed Color Profile Image Compression: None Pixel Order: Interleaved (RGBRGB) Byte Order: Macintosh Save Image Pyramid deselected Preview/Format: Macintosh (8-bit Color) Fonts: Embed Fonts (for other applications) Options: select Include Document Thumbnails OPI: Open PrePress Interface, or OPI, is the technique of using a lores proxy image that later will be swapped for the hires image during the refine process. This technique is not currently supported by Quality Printing. File Naming Convention This section applies to customers who are supplying print-ready PDFs and wish to take advantage of our automated processing on InSite. Naming convention for print-ready PDFs Number_Description_BW.pdf = files that only contain black/grayscale color Number_Description_4C.pdf = files that contain only CMYK process colors Number_Description_Spot.pdf = files that contain CMYK + Spot colors or only Spot colors Number_Description_K_PMS.pdf = files that contain K + Spot colors. The Number section can be the job s number or some kind of identifying number. The Description can contain letters, numbers or a combination of both. The _[Color].pdf section of the file name is not case sensitive. A few examples: 99999_ShelleBrochure_Spot.pdf 850_MovingStorage_12pgs_4C.pdf 1234_Catalog_FrenchVers_K_PMS.pdf 1234_Catalog_EnglishVer_K_PMS.pdf

Naming convention for Alterations The naming convention for alteration files is the same as above. However, the folio number(s) should be included in the description. A few examples: 99999_ShelleBroch_F03_r1_Spot.pdf (revision 1 alt file for folio 3) 850_MovStor_F03_F08_F12_r2_4C.pdf (revision 2 alt file for folios 3, 8, 12) 1234_Cat_FrenchVer_r1_K_PMS.pdf (revision 1 alt file for all new pages) *Note: The total number of characters allowed in a file name, including the.pdf extension, is 32. Questions If you have any questions about document specifications, please feel free to contact your Quality Printing Project Manager. For additional references, visit www.quality-printing.com for a copy of this Preflight Checklist, as well as downloadable PDFs to guide you in making print-ready PDF files.
