1 Printsure Advertising - News International (Scotland) Ltd Overview News International (Scotland) Ltd is introducing a new product: Printsure. The system will preflight and send PDF advertisements over your broadband/ftp connection. There are no charges for this service. The sender must preflight their ad against NI specification for each title. A report will be displayed prior to upload that will show both warnings and failures. The ad can only be sent to NI if it passes the preflight and all failures must be corrected prior to upload. The ad will be converted to the correct press profile on receipt. There may be some colour changes if you have not used the correct NI profile when creating your ad. Further information can be found on Registration /setup procedure 1. Register as a Printsure user. Send an to the Ad Production dept (joe.miller@newsint.co.uk) and ask them to set up your user account (no charge). Your mail should contain the following information: Your Name Your company name Your address Your telephone number Your chosen Printsure user name (letters and/or numbers, up to 8 characters) Your chosen Printsure password (letters and/or numbers, up to 8 characters) You will receive a return from Joe Miller confirming your registration. Now you re ready to download the Printsure droplet for sending your PDFs. 2. Go to the News International Printsure web site: This is a one-off task only. You need to download a Printsure Droplet to your desktop which will be used to send your ads to News International (do not delete from your desktop after install). Logon with your Printsure user name and password

2 Choose To regularly submit PDF s, install the desktop droplet now Choose Droplet for all workflows. This will provide an option where you can choose the newspaper title from a single menu. Follow the on-screen instructions. A droplet will be installed on your desktop. Now you are ready to preflight and send ads to News International. Click LOGOUT and close your browser window.

3 Sending your PDF 1. Make your advertisement Please use the correct ICC profile when you make up your ad in InDesign, Quark Xpress, Ilustrator, Photoshop etc. An ICC profile and Adobe photoshop Settings file is available for download from: You will also find a guide for correct use of the profile to ensure your ad prints as expected on NI presses. IMPORTANT: your ad may not print as expected if you do not use the correct NI CMYK profile or if you use spot colours, devicen, RGB or Lab colours. These colours will be automatically converted to the NI press profile on receipt. News International (Scotland) Ltd will not accept any liability for conversion quality. 2. Make a PDF of your advertisement The PDF must be PDFx-1a (2001) Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). All other PDF versions will FAIL the preflight and cannot be uploaded. To create your PDF file: * Please ensure the Acrobat distiller settings are as follows:- PDFX-1a (2001) Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) Ensure Embed All Fonts option is selected. * Ensure only 1 page is in the PDF (i.e. No Multi-Page Documents) * Check the TRIM box dimensions of your PDF in Adobe Acrobat, as the file will be rejected if the TRIM SIZE is incorrect 2. Preflight and upload your PDF - Drag the PDF onto the droplet. - Choose the newspaper title and Colour or Mono (important - if you choose incorrectly your PDF will probably fail)

4 - Choose the size of your ad (importatnt - if you choose incorrectly your will probably fail) - Printsure will check the file and it will PASS or FAIL. Some basic errors (eg white not set to knockout will be FIXED automatically and a fixed PDF will be copied to your system. This fixed file will have a -FX extension). 5. If the PDF is a PASS - Fill in the copy instruction details and click Continue. - You will see the preflight report. Click Upload. - Your PDF will be sent to News International and you ll get an confirmation.

5 6. If the PDF is a FAIL - You will see the preflight report. Read the fail messages and click Show Errors to help identify the problem areas. - Return to your original ad document (InDesign, Quark Xpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, Distiller etc) and rectify the problem. Make a new PDF and start again at point no.2.
