EBSCOHost More than 300 full text and secondary databases are available via EBSCOhost. According to School Library Journal (August 2008), "EBSCO has not only completely redesigned its interface, it has taken database searching into the 21st century, creating a model certain to motivate change in future databases." (from publisher s website http://www.ebscohost.com) EBSCO Publishing/EBSCOhost is the registered trademark of EBSCO Publishing.
Choosing a Database EbscoHost is really a collection of databases. The databases can be search simultaneously or alone.
Creating a My EBSCOhost Account To use Ebsco to the full potential, save searches and articles in folders and create alerts. Begin by creating an account. Click (located in the top right hand corner). Select Create New Account and fill out the form.

Advanced Keyword Searching Search Options Boolean/Phrase conducts a phrase search (within 5 words) on the keywords entered in the search box(es). Boolean operators such as AND, OR, NOT can also used. This is the default search option. Find all of my search terms - automatically inserts AND within the keywords entered in the search box(es). Find any of my search terms - automatically inserts OR within the keywords entered in the search box(es). SmartText Searching allows users to paste large amounts of text, such as a sentence, paragraph or entire page into the Find box to search.
Advanced Keyword Searching Search Expanders Apply related words search results include synonyms and plurals of your term(s). Also search within the full text of the articles search results include the full text of the article. Note: only HTML and native PDFs are searched.

Sorting, Page Options and Alerts Sorting select an option from the dropdown list. Relevance is the default and if selected a green indicator appears. EbscoHost determines relevance by the number of times the search terms appear (and where) in the article citation fields.
Sorting, Page Options and Alerts Page options Title only displays article title. Brief displays article title and source information (default). Standard displays article title, source information and the first sentence of the abstract. Detailed displays article title, sources information and the abstract.
Sorting, Page Options and Alerts Alert/Save/Share sign in to set an alert, save or share a search. Create an alert notifies the user when a new article is added that fits the search parameters. Useful for long-term research. Save to folder save the list to a folder that will be lost when the session is over unless saved under an account. Use permalink directly links to the search. Bookmark posts the search to these social networking sites.
Viewing and Using an Article To view the article s detailed record click on the title. To view the full text, click PDF Full Text or HTML Full Text. Fields listed in the citation will vary by database.

Viewing and Using an Article Article tools Folder saves the article to a folder for the duration of the session or permanently (must be signed in). Print Email Save Cite - view the article in several different citation formats. Export exports citations in a variety of bibliographic manager formats. Create a Note attaches a note to the article. Permalink creates a direct link to the article. Bookmark post on social networks. Listen Text-to-speech reads the article. Translate translate the article.
Publication Search The publication search lists information in the database by publication name. Click at the top of the screen to access the publication search.
Cited References Click, at the top of the page, to keyword search with part or all of a citation.
Image Search Click, at the top of the page, to access the image keyword search.
Browsing Subjects and Indexes Click to browse a list of subjects or subject terms for a specific database, depending upon availability.
