Release Summary EnterpriseDB is proud to release another major upgrade to Postgres Enterprise Manager, a Postgres productivity tool designed to assist database administrators, system architects, and performance analysts in administering, monitoring, and tuning their PostgreSQL and Postgres Plus Advanced Server databases across large enterprises. Postgres Enterprise Manager has been architected to manage and monitor your database infrastructure anywhere from a handful to hundreds of servers all from a single console, allowing complete remote control over all aspects of your databases. II. New Features and Enhancements A. Merge with pgadmin v1.16 Copyright 2012 EnterpriseDB Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Page: 1

The PEM client now contains all the features and fixes of the latest release of pgadmin including the following highlights: Data Import Wizard Search for database objects by name Auto-refresh for objects when clicked in the object tree Security labels support Security barrier support Object type privileges support SSL compression option for SSL connections Copy table structure for New tables Support for optimized pg_dump/pg_restore options: Pre-data, Data, and Post-data For a complete list of updates see: http://www.pgadmin.org/development/changelog.php B. Web Client In addition to the current platform specific client that is part of PEM, there is now a web based PEM client providing you access to the monitoring capabilities of PEM from just about any browser on any device. C. Log Manager The Log Manager allows you to do bulk configuration of logging parameters (log file locations, logging frequency, log message selection, and log format) across all your servers, and optionally configure log collection into a central table in the PEM database. You then have a dashboard on which you can view the consolidated set of logs. D. SSH tunneling This feature allows machine-local settings for SSH tunneling of client connections to databases and PEM. By setting a hostname, username and password/certificate you will cause the client to open an SSH tunnel via the specified machine to the host/port in the main config for the server. This should provide easier access to the monitoring server from outside of the organization's firewall for authorized individuals. E. Detailed Global Alerts Global alerts now indicate which server or agent is down and/or not responding. Copyright 2012 EnterpriseDB Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Page: 2

F. Host System Details A table displaying details about the host's file system details" has been added to the Disk section of the OS dashboard. G. Processes Line Chart A line chart showing the number of processes over time has been added to the OS dashboard. III. Postgres Enterprise Manager Architecture Postgres Enterprise Manager is architected in a distributed fashion and contains the following three base components: Postgres Enterprise Manager Server responsible for a variety of administration functions, receiving information from all agents, and maintaining information in its repository. Postgres Enterprise Manager Client the user console from which all operations are carried out (e.g. database administration, viewing performance information, etc.) Postgres Enterprise Manager Agent responsible for performing tasks on each managed machine and collecting statistics for the monitored database server and operating system. In addition, there is an optional SQL Profiler server plugin component, which is installed separately similar to the three components listed above. A. Postgres Enterprise Manager Server This package (installed first) will install the Postgres Enterprise Manager Server. It creates the Enterprise Manager database in the database server (in normal mode PostgreSQL 9.2, in advanced mode a user selected database server) and starts the agent service on the pem-server host, which collects metrics for the OS and the PEM database server. Please see the Installation section below for more details on pre-requisites for installing the Server. B. Postgres Enterprise Manager Client This package will install the GUI client for Postgres Enterprise Manager. The client provides all the functionality of pgadmin 1.16, and adds supports for connecting to a Postgres Enterprise Manager server, allowing the user to manage servers centrally, configure monitoring and alerting, profile SQL workloads and browse dashboard pages showing useful graphs and statistics. The user can also run static configuration reports as well as reports against collected metrics. Copyright 2012 EnterpriseDB Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Page: 3

This release also introduces a web browser client that gets installed as part of the Server installation. The web client supports all the monitoring functionality of the GUI client. However at this time, the web client does not yet support all the database management features in the GUI client. C. Postgres Enterprise Manager Agent This package will install the Postgres Enterprise Manager agent. It creates and starts the agent service on each machine that the user wishes to manage with Postgres Enterprise Manager. The installation process requires the user to register the agent with an existing Postgres Enterprise Manager Server. Please see the Installation section below for more details on pre-requisites for installing the Agent. D. SQL Profiler PlugIn This package will create the files required to enable profiler logging against PostgreSQL v8.4 and higher or Postgres Plus Advanced Server v9 and higher. The database server requires a specific version of this installer. Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.0 will ship with the SQL Profiler plugin already bundled and installed requiring only the configuration steps included in the Installation Guide. IV. Installation, Pre-Requisites and Licensing A. Postgres Enterprise Manager Installation Postgres Enterprise Manager installs quickly and easily through the use of click through graphical installers. The fastest and most trouble free way to install Enterprise Manager is to download and follow the instructions in the Postgres Enterprise Manager Installation Guide. The Installation Guide steps you through the installation of each base component in the most effective sequence and additionally provides tips to optimize each step for your installation. Finally, after completing the steps in the Installation Guide, your Enterprise Manager system will be configured, running and monitoring your managed hosts. The Postgres Enterprise Manager Installation Guide is available online at: http://www.enterprisedb.com/documentation/english and available in PDF format at: http://www.enterprisedb.com/postgres-enterprise-manager Please note that only an administrative or super user may run any of the Enterprise Manager installers. In addition, the installer can be launched on any platform using the command line. B. Pre-Requisites 1. Postgres Enterprise Manager Server: Copyright 2012 EnterpriseDB Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Page: 4

PostgreSQL 9.0.x or Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.0.x or higher should be installed on the system using the EnterpriseDB installer. If not, the Enterprise Manager installer will install PostgreSQL v9.2.x for you. EnterpriseDB's Apache/PHP package should be installed on the system (recommended version: 2.2.22-5.4.5-1). If not, the Enterprise Manager installer will install/upgrade it for you. 2. Postgres Enterprise Manager Client: None for the GUI client. The web client requires one of the following internet browsers: - Chrome (21.0.1180.75) or higher - Firefox 12 or higher - Internet Explorer 9 or higher - Safari (5.1.5) or higher 3. Postgres Enterprise Manager Agent: There are no package dependencies for the agent. However a running PEM server instance must be accessible for installation to complete. 4. SQL Profiler PlugIn: C. Licensing PostgreSQL v8.4 or v9.x, installed using the EnterpriseDB installer. Note: the source code to the SQL Profiler Plugin is now available under a limited license to PEM product subscribers. This allows subscribers to use the SQL Profiler component of PEM with non-enterprisedb distributions of PostgreSQL. Subscribers under the direction of an EnterpriseDB technician can compile the source code against their version of PostgreSQL enabling the SQL Profiler to work correctly. To inquire if your distribution of PostgreSQL qualifies, contact EnterpriseDB Sales at US +1 781-357-3390 or 1-877-377-4352 ; EMEA +31 70 891 8451 ; Japan +81-3-5488-6007 ; UK +44 (0) 1235 227276 ; INDIA +91-20-30589500/01 Postgres Enterprise Manager is distributed and licensed by EnterpriseDB Corporation under a Limited Use License providing full functionality for evaluation purposes only, for a period of 45 days. When the evaluation period ends, the Enterprise Manager Client user interface features will operate with reduced functionality, however, the agents on your managed hosts will continue to collect data without interruption or loss of information. To use Enterprise Manager beyond the evaluation period in a production environment you are required to purchase a software subscription from EnterpriseDB. With the purchase of a subscription you will receive a product key, which when applied to the Client, will restore it to a fully Copyright 2012 EnterpriseDB Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Page: 5

functional state. To apply a Product Key, start the Postgres Enterprise Manager Client program and select Register PEM from the About menu.
