LEARNING TECHNOLOGY AT LJMU MARKING CANVAS ASSIGNMENTS OFFLINE (INCLUDING MARKING ANONYMOUSLY) Information about Downloading Student Submissions If you want to download all student submissions for an assignment, you can download them as a bulk download. All submissions are downloaded as a single ZIP file that you can use to grade submissions on your computer, offline. Please be aware that: If a student has resubmitted an assignment, only the most recent submission will be included in the ZIP file. Students can submit past the due date and these submissions are marked as late. Only student submissions submitted up to the time you download are included in the zip file. Availability dates can be applied to the assignment to ensure that students do not submit to the assignment after a specific date. File Types and File Names Bulk downloads can be used for the following submission types: file uploads, text entries (displayed as HTML files) and website URLs (displayed as HTML files). In bulk downloads, Canvas automatically amends the file name for each submission type: For group assignments, the file name will include the name of the assigned group. For individual student assignments, the file name will include the name of the student (last name first). When anonymous grading is enabled, student names are not included in the names of downloaded files. Note: After downloading student files, you can re-upload all student submissions. However, you cannot change the names of the submission files. Otherwise Canvas will not be able to recognise the files that should be replaced.
Anonymous Grading If you intend on marking work anonymously, please complete steps 1-3 below, otherwise proceed to the next section. Canvas automatically renames all submitted files, for download, to include: The student name (last name first) The student Canvas ID The submission ID The original filename When the Anonymous Grading function is enabled, the student s name will be removed from the filename, leaving just their Canvas ID, (1588, in this example), the assignment ID and the original filename: 1. To enable Anonymous Grading, go first to the Settings area of your course. 2. Select the Feature Options Tab. 3. Click the button [1] next to the Anonymous grading option so that it changes to green. The work can now be anonymously marked. 1

In Course Navigation, click the Grades link. 2. Hover over the name of the assignment. Click the drop-down menu. 3. Click the Mute Assignment link.
Preparing Files for Batch Upload 1. Once feedback has been added to the student s work, click Save and not Save As. Do not make any changes to the file name as this will prevent file upload back into Canvas. 2. Once the submissions have been marked, you will first need to compress them into a zip folder, for batch upload. Locate the files on your computer and select all (ctrl + A) that you wish to upload. 3. Right Click on one of the items and select send to/compressed (zipped) folder. On a Mac Select Compress Items. This will create a new zip folder, containing all of the feedback and/or marks ready for upload. It is important that you zip all the individual items up together rather than the folder containing the documents - the latter will cause an error when uploading and prevent feedback and/or grades displaying to the students. Upload Process Guidance on how to upload your zip file to canvas can be found here: https://ltech.ljmu.ac.uk/index.php/staff-canvas-guides/
