SUPPRESSOR PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS FOR A 120VAC, SINGLE PHASE, 2 WIRE, WIRED IN SERVICE 1.0 SCOPE: This specification covers the detail requirements for a high-speed, solid-state transient suppressor designed to protect electronic equipment and systems from transient over voltages. 2.0 PURPOSE: This device is to eliminate the damaging effects to equipment from transient over voltages which can appear on 120VAC, single phase, 15A, 50/60 Hz service. 3.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The ACP100MN is a solid-state transient suppressor for use on 120VAC, 15A, 50/60Hz power lines. It is configured with self-leads in a polymeric enclosure. The ACP100MN is both bipolar and bidirectional; i.e., it can suppress transients of either polarity of the sine wave and from either direction, (source or load). The suppressor protects from line to neutral. The suppressor uses only high speed silicon avalanche suppressor diodes (SASD) as the suppression devices. An in-line 15 amp fuse will de-energize the load if too much current is drawn by the load or the suppression circuit fails due to excessive energy dissipation. 4.0 OPERATION: When a transient over voltage is sensed, the silicon avalanche diodes go into conduction while maintaining the voltage at a sufficiently low value to protect the connected equipment. The suppressor does not short the line like crowbar type devices. 5.0 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: 5.1 MECHANICAL: The construction and physical characteristics of the suppressor are as outlined herin. 5.1.1 Enclosure Description: The suppressor is enclosed within a rigid polymeric case made from UL recognized plastic. The enclosure has the physical measurements shown on sheet 6. It has 6 (minimum) 14 AWG leads for connection. 5.1.2 Installation: The unit is intended to be mounted by contact adhesive tape or 2 #8 screws. (See page 6). 5.1.3 Material: The material shall be as specified herein. However, when a definite material is not specified, a material shall be used which shall enable the device to meet the performance specifications defined herein. 5.2 ELECTRICAL: The suppressor shall perform electrically within the conditions and specifications defined herein. 5.2.1 Minimum Voltage Protection Level (VPL): The ACP100MN has the following suppression voltage level (Line to Neutral): 220v ±10% peak for a 10 x 1000 usec waveform. 1400-078 Page 2 of 6 REV C
5.2.2 Maximum Voltage Protection Level (VPL) (Line to Neutral): 300v peak for a 10 x 1000 usec waveform. 5.2.3 Peak Power Dissipation: The peak power dissipation for a 10 x 1000 microsecond waveform is 12,000 watts with the VPL not to exceed 300V peak. 5.2.4 Response Time: Less than 5 nanoseconds. The mechanical assembly shall use chip construction of SASD to maintain the response time. No SASD with self-leads are acceptable. 5.2.5 Standby Power: Less than 1mw 5.2.6 Leakage Current: Line to Neutral @ 175v less than 5 microamps. 5.3 ENVIRONMENTAL: 5.3.1 Operating and Storage Temperature: -40 to +70 C 5.3.2 Humidity: Less than 95% 6.0 PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY: Domestic and short-term storage. 6.1 PRESERVATION: Preservation shall be sufficient to afford protection during shipment and short-term storage. 6.2 PACKING: Packing shall be accomplished in the manner which will insure acceptance by common carrier at the lowest rate and will afford protection against physical damage during shipment SUMMARY SUPPRESOR PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS For a 120 VAC, Single Phase, 15A, 2-Wire, Wire-in Service ACP100MN 1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The A.C. Voltage Surge Suppressor is a high speed, high current, solid-state device designed to protect electronic equipment and systems from transient overvoltages. It performs this function by limiting the magnitude of a transient overvoltage present on the A.C. power lines. The suppressor will provide continuous bipolar, bi-directional, non-interrupting protection and be capable of instant automatic reset with no degradation in protection capabilities; i.e., no gas tubes or metal oxide varistors are used. The suppressor must be solid-state, utilizing silicon avalanche suppressor diodes in a lattice matrix configuration. It shall start to suppress the transient at 130% of the peak voltage (para. 3.1) of the sine wave. At maximum power dissipation (para. 3.3), the device shall not exceed the maximum voltage protection level (para. 3.2). The device shall remove power from the load (byway of a fuse) in the event of suppressor failure. The suppressor element shall be installed in parallel with no in-line impedance, except for the fuse. The device shall be contained in a non-metallic enclosure with a U.L. fire rating of 94V-1. 1400-078 Page 3 of 6 REV C
