Sticky Notes for Cognos Analytics by Tech Data BSP Software Installation Guide Sticky Notes for Cognos Analytics is an easy to install extension that allows report authors to record notes directly from the authoring perspective. This light-weight JavaScript plugin utilizes Google Spreadsheets for cloud-based data storage. Sticky Notes helps you and your team communicate directly on reports to improve your workflow. Use it to share revision notes, reminders, or use it as a TO-DO list for your process. Getting Started Follow these steps to get this extension working in your Cognos environment and local machine. Prerequisites In order to use this extension, you will need the following: Cognos Analytics Environment Google Account Installing 1. Download the Sticky Notes Extension from http://www.bspsoftware.com. Leave the downloaded file in the.zip format to be uploaded to Cognos. 2. In Cognos navigate to Manage > Customization and open the Extensions Tab. 3. Click on the upload image and upload the StickyNotes.zip downloaded from the BSP website.
4. In a new tab or window, navigate to http://console.developers.google.com and click on Credentials. 5. Click on the Create button to create a new project. 6. Create a project name and accept the Terms of Service and click Create.
7. Next, Click Create Credentials and Select OAuth client ID. 8. There will be an alert to set a product name. Click on the Configure consent screen button and input the product name Sticky Notes for Cognos then click save.
10. You will then be redirected back to setup your Client ID. In this list select Web application. More fields will display. For Name input Sticky Notes for Cognos and for Authorized JavaScript origins input your Cognos environment URL. Then click Create. 11. Your client ID key will be generated. Copy this client ID.
12. Back in your Cognos environment open any report you have access to. In the top left corner, you should see the sticky notes icon. Click on this icon to open up Sticky Notes. *NOTE: If you are using Internet Explorer and nothing happens when you click this link, you will need to add your Cognos Environment URL as a Trusted Site in your settings before moving on. See Appendix A for instructions on how to do this. 13. The sticky Notes extension will display on the right side of your screen and prompt you for your Google Client ID. Input your Client ID and click save. You will get a message that your Client ID has been saved. 14. In the bottom right corner of the Sticky Notes Extension, click the settings gear then select Authorize.
15. A new tab will open asking you to select your google account. Click on your account to continue. 16. Google will then ask for your verification to allow this application access to your google drive. Click Allow to continue. The tab will close and bring you back to your Cognos page.
17. Last, you will need to navigate back to your google developer console to enable the Drive API and Sheets API. To do this click on the Library tab and under G Suite APIs select Drive API. 18. Now at the top of the screen click Enable.
19. Repeat this process for the Sheets API. If you see this error message when trying to use Sticky Notes, you have not enabled either the Sheets API or Drive API. 20. That s it! Back in your Cognos environment you should see this screen meaning you have successfully configured Sticky Notes in your Cognos Analytics environment. Enjoy! Usage
To get started using Sticky Notes for Cognos Analytics, simply type a note in the input box and hit Enter on your keyboard or click the Add note button. This will create the spreadsheet to store the Sticky Note data in your Google Drive. DO NOT EDIT OR DELETE THIS FILE AS YOU CAN LOSE ALL OF YOUR NOTE DATA. To edit an existing note simply click the pencil Edit button on the note and make your change and click the save button. To delete a note simply hit the trash delete button and the note will be deleted. Notes It is important to note that this extension stores your Client ID in your browser s local storage. If you use a different machine or different browser you will need to input this Client ID again. If you are working in a team and would like to share notes, simply use the same Client ID for each member and a shared Google Account for Authorization. Your Cognos Account will record your name for differentiation. Appendix A Setting Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer 1. Navigate to Settings > Internet Options 2. Open Security Tab. 3. Select Trusted Sites then click on Sites Button. 4. Add the base URL (Port Included if needed) for your Cognos Environment and click Add. 5. Click Apply and then OK. 6. Refresh your Cognos Page for changes to take effect.
Sharing the Sticky Notes Data File Installation Guide Method: Share the Sticky Notes Data document via Google Drive sharing 1. Using Google Drive share the Sticky Notes Data file with whomever is on your team. It is very important that these users do not already have a copy of this Sticky Notes Data in their Google Drive or in their Trash folder of Google Drive. 2. Within Google Drive locate your Sticky Notes Data file and Right click and select Share from the dropdown. 3. Add email addresses or names of users you would like to share with and click done. Ensure that the can edit method is selected to allow users to make changes to the document. 4. Now that the user has the Sticky Notes Data file in their google drive they can login to the ICS application in their Cognos environment and Authenticate using their Google Login Credentials and the shared Google Client ID.
