Download VirtualBox from here (www.uow.edu.au/~jrg/115/howto/http://www.oracle.com/ technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html). When downloading pick Windows (32-bit/64-bit) Platform and Windows Installer link. Save a downloaded file VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-Win.exe. Note that a version of Virtual Box can be different when you do install the software so a file name can be a bit different. Retrieve the downloaded file and execute the file. When the installer asks you Do you want to run this file? click at Run buton. The installer displays Welcome to the Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.x.y Setup Wizard window. Click at Next button. The installer displays Custom Setup window. You can pick a location for VirtualBox or agree with the proposed location. Click at Next button. The installer displays the next Custom Setup window with three installtion options. Just accept all of them. Click at Next button. The installer displays Warning: Network Interfaces window. Please read a text inside the window and in a reply to a question Proceed with installation now? click at Yes button. The installer displays Ready Install window. Click at Install button. If Windows Security asks you Would you like to install this device software then click at Install button, however you do not need to check a box Always trust software from Oracle Corporation ;) 1
Each time installer asks you Would you like to install this device software?, click at Install button. Installer displays a window Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.x.y installation is complete. Click at Finish button. Next, you have to install Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack. Return to a link here (www.uow.edu.au/~jrg/115/howto/http://www.oracle.com/ technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html). and scroll down to a section Oracle VM Virtual Box Extension Pack. Next, click at a link 5.0.10ExtPack (note, that name of link may change when new version of VirtualBox is available). The installer displays OpeningOracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack-5.0.10... window. Click a radio button Open with VirtualBox Manager (default) and click at OK button and wait, wait, wait,... The installer starts Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager and it displays VirtualBox - Question window. Click at Install button. The installer displays VirtualBox License window. Scroll down and click at I Agree button. Click at Yes button when operating system ask you Do you want to allow the following program to make chnages to this computer. Click at Ok button when the installer confirms a successful installation. Finally, you can close Oracke VM VirtualBox Manager window. Step 1 How to start VirtualBox? To start VirtualBox double click Oracle VM VirtualBox shortcut on your desktop. If you do not have such shortcut on your desktop then use Start button->all Programs->Oracle VM VirtualBox->Oracle VM VirtualBox. VirtualBox displays Welcome to VirtualBox window. At this point you can create your own virtual machine. However, it is not our objective now. Later on when you will have more time (it will not happen soon) you can experiment with creating the new virtual machines and installation of operating systems on these machines. Now we shall import a virtual machine prepared for you by your lecturer. We shall do it in the next step How to import virtual machine to VirtualBox?. Do not quit VirtualBox now. Step 2 How to import an appliance to VirtualBox? To import a virtual machine select in Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager window File->Import Appliance option from its menu. 2
When VirtualBox displays Appliance to import window use a small button with an image of a folder on the right hand side of file name field to navigate to a location where an appliance has been saved. Your laboratory specification precisely determines a location where you can find an appliance. When ready, i.e. when a name of ova file is displayed (a file name with a small image of orange box) click at the file name and later on at Open button. Next click at Next button in Appliance to import window. Virtualbox displays Appliance settings window. Click at Import button. this time really long... At the end VirtualBox displays an icon of Powered Off virtual machine in Welcome to VirtualBox! window. Next, it is recommended to connect USB drive to the machine. It is explained how to do it in the next step. Do not close Welcome to VirtualBox! window. Step 3 How to connect USB drive to VirtualBox? Plug USB drive, which you would like to connect to a virtual machine into USB port on your system. Click at an icon of Powered Off virtual machine which you want to use located on the left hand side of VirtualBox Manager window. The manager displays New, Settings, and Start icons. Click at Settings icon. VirtualBox opens Settings window. Click at USB option listed in a column on the left hand side of the window. Select a radio button option associated with USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller. Click at a small icon of USB device with a green plus located on the right margin of the window. VirtualBox lists in a small window few devices that can be connected through USB. Select your USB drive and click at OK button. VirtualBox closes Settings window. Next we shall power on a virtual machine. Step 4 How to power on a virtual machine? Click at an icon of Powered Off virtual machine... on the left hand side of VirtualBox Manager window. The manager displays New, Settings, and Start icons. Click at Large green arrow with a text Start below the arrow. 3
until Ubuntu asks you about a password to connect as a user CSIT115. When ready type in csit115 as a password and press Enter key. Then, wait until the icons on the left hand side of the screen appear. Step 5 How to export an appliance from VirtualBox? To export a virtual machine you have to shut it down first. When running Ubuntu click at a small circular button in the right upper corner of the screen and choose Shut Down... option at the bottom of a menu. Click at a large Shut down button in the middle of the screen. VirtualBox takes you back to VirtualBox Manager window. Select File->Export Appliance from the topmost menu. VirtualBox opens Export Virtual Appliance window. Select a virtual machine you would like to export and click at Next button. Select location of export files. Make sure that extension of the file is.ova. Select OVF 2.0 format and click at Next button. Then, in Export Virtual Appliance window click at Export button. it takes some time... :( Step 6 How to clone VirtualBox? Sometimes you may need to create a clone (an identical copy) of a virtual machine. Select Machine->Clone options from the topmost menu of VirtualBox Manager. Select a new name for the cloned virtual machine and click at Next button. A name of the clone must be different from a name of any already existing virtual machines. Select Full clone radio button and click at Clone button. Step 7 How to quit VirtualBox? To quit VirtualBox select an option File->Exit from the topmost menu of VirtualBox Manager.
