Hardware Announcement July 11, 2006 IBM Thin Console for System i offers an inexpensive alternative to a twinax-attached system console Overview The 9944 Model 100 IBM Thin Console for System i is a low-cost, easy-to-install, easy-to-use, fixed-function system console for the System i5 520 and 550. Tailored to support the operator console in an i5/os environment, it provides a dedicated console for systems with a single i5/os partition. In addition, using the i5/os virtual partition manager capability, the thin console can support a System i server with up to four Linux partitions if only i5/os virtual I/O is used by the Linux partitions. The thin console interfaces to a 5250 green screen display acting as a 520 or 550 i5/os system console and supports any i5/os command that can be entered on a 5250 display console. The thin console is plugged into the hardware management console (HMC) port of a 520 or 550 system unit. Because no I/O processor (IOP) or I/O adapter (IOA) cards are required, you benefit from added flexibility in your system configuration. Neoware, Inc., manufactures, warrants, and supports the thin console. Configuration, ordering, shipping, and billing are provided by IBM for your convenience. The thin console can be ordered and shipped with your system order or separately as an MES order. Key prerequisites System i5 520 or 550 with a single i5/os partition i5/os V5R3, or later Firmware level of SF240 Planned availability date August 11, 2006 At a glance Thin Console for System i: Offers an inexpensive, simple alternative to a twinax-attached system console Frees PCI ports previously used by a twinax solution Supports IBM System i5 520 and 550 in a single-partition i5/os operating environment For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: AE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. Description The thin console provides operator console functions that support everything necessary for attachment to the System i5 520 or 550 service processor. These functions are supported with a standard green screen 5250 interface. Neoware preloads the thin console with the required function. You can choose from either 80- or 132-character screen formats. Although it is recommended that you dedicate the thin console to just console functions, you can also use it for 5250 applications. The thin console includes these four components: Logic unit Power cord Keyboard Mouse (can be used for some 5250 emulation functions) You must provide: A standard monitor that supports 1024 x 768 resolution at 75Hz to plug into the logic unit of the thin console A standard Ethernet cable up to 7.62 m (25 ft) that attaches the logic unit to the 520 or 550 system unit Only one thin console can be attached and supported at one time. The Ethernet cable attaches the thin console to an Ethernet port on the 520 or 550 service processor. (The two service processor Ethernet ports are known as the 520 or 550 HMC ports and are labeled HMC01 and HMC02.) The Ethernet ports used are different from the two Ethernet ports available to i5/os, so no Ethernet port capacity is taken away from i5/os. The thin console is designed to connect to partition one and provide a 5250 interface to a single i5/os partition. IBM does not support environments where an HMC and thin console are concurrently active on the same machine. If you want a different type of console interface at a later time, use normal console type switching procedures (code 65, 21, and so on), which are performed on the operator panel on the front of the 520 or 550. This is useful when you want to add another i5/os partition to the system, or when you temporarily switch to a different console type that enables remote operators. Setting up a thin console is a simple two-step process that you need to perform only once, either before or after powering up the 520 or 550 system unit. After you make the necessary connections between the monitor, the thin console, and the 520 or 550 system unit, and after you power up the monitor and thin console, simply: Select the language Enter the password for the 520 or 550 service processor The service processor password is shipped from IBM as blank. The first time a thin console or an HMC connects, you must provide a password, separate from the i5/os password. Retain the password in case you should need to attach a different thin console or an HMC to the 520 or 550. The two-step setup information is stored in the thin console. After initial setup, the 5250 operator console screen is all that you see when the thin console is turned on. If you move the thin console to a different system unit, or if language changes are required, you can reset the stored setup information back to the initial factory settings by pressing Ctl+Alt+End. You can then make changes by repeating the setup process. The thin console is a single-byte character set (SBCS) device. It does not support double-byte character set (DBCS) or bidirectional languages. The following keyboard languages are supported: Country United States Italy France Germany Spain United Kingdom Canada Netherlands Belgium Switzerland Sweden Austria Denmark Portugal Norway Keyboards U.S. English Italian, Swiss French/German French, Swiss French/German German/Austrian, Swiss French/German Spanish U.K. English U.S. English, Canadian French Dutch Belgium/French, Dutch Swiss French/German, Italian Swedish/Finnish German/Austrian Danish Portuguese Norwegian Neoware includes a standard two-year hardware warranty. You can upgrade to a three-year hardware warranty by registering at the Neoware Web site. Neoware supports software preloaded on the thin console. If you need software updates, you can download them to a USB-attached memory stick at http://www.neoware.com/support/thinclient.html To ensure backup for your console, consider these options: Buy an additional thin console or arrange a replacement option with another party such as a local Business Partner who may be supporting several clients with the same interest. Review the console type switching process, using the front operator panel of the 520 or 550. This option may require an IOA to be in a specific PCI slot and would require loading and configuring a workstation with the console application. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different from those for initial orders. The maximums listed refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities. The order type tells you if a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model due to a model conversion. Supported features cannot be ordered on the converted model, only left on or removed from the converted model. The function of the thin console is limited to a 5250 green screen interface for a single i5/os partition console. Using the i5/os virtual partition manager, it can also support up to four Linux partitions if only i5/os virtual I/O is used. However, if a second i5/os partition, an AIX 5L partition, or a Linux partition requires dedicated I/O, an HMC is required. Unlike the iseries Navigator available through Operations Console, the thin console does not include a GUI. -5-106-510
