1 Software Announcement June 13, 2006 IBM Ported Tools for z/os: Perl for z/os Feature Overview IBM Ported Tools for z/os : Perl for z/os Feature (Perl for z/os) provides a port of the Perl (version 5.8.7) scripting language to the z/os UNIX System Services platform. Perl (Practical Extraction and Report Language) is a very popular general-purpose programming language that is widely used on UNIX and other computing platforms. This port of Perl to the z/os platform offers an enhancement over other versions of Perl in that it is preconfigured and precompiled and is designed to address ASCII/EBCDIC conversion and provide Unicode support. Perl for z/os is an unpriced feature of the IBM Ported Tools for z/os, an unpriced licensed program. 2 Description IBM Ported Tools for z/os: Perl for z/os Feature provides a port of the Perl (version 5.8.7) scripting language to the z/os UNIX platform. Perl (Practical Extraction and Report Language) is a very popular general-purpose programming language that is widely used on UNIX and other computing platforms. Support for z/os UNIX has been available for several years in the open-source version of Perl. Building this version of Perl is often difficult even for experienced users, and requires access to several GNU utilities. Perl for z/os is preconfigured and precompiled, and is designed to eliminate the need for those complicated tasks. EBCDIC-related factors in the Perl application have been addressed; therefore, it is anticipated that Perl applications can run with data generated entirely in the z/os UNIX environment. As with any z/os related programming language, Perl programs that process data originating from non-ebcdic (typically ASCII) systems must still convert this data from ASCII to EBCDIC, and vice versa. 4 Customized Offerings Product deliverables are shipped only via Customized Offerings (for example, CBPDO, ServerPac, SystemPac ). CBPDO and ServerPac are offered for electronic delivery, where ShopzSeries product ordering is available. For more details on electronic delivery, refer to the ShopzSeries help information. Media type for this software product is chosen during the Customized Offerings ordering process. Based on your customer environment, it is recommended that the highest possible density tape media is selected. Once a product becomes generally available, it will be included in the next ServerPac and SystemPac monthly update.
