Welcome to the Sullivan Family Library s online tutorial on OneSearch. Slide 1, 1 of 24

OneSearch allows you to search all of the Library s online databases at once, providing access to articles, books, ebooks and more. It s a useful tool for discovering what is available on a topic, and which databases have better coverage of the topic. Slide 2, 2 of 24

To access OneSearch, start at the Library s website. You can click on the OneSearch link in the Quick Info tabs... Slide 3, 3 of 24

Or you can use the Search for menu and click OneSearch. Slide 4, 4 of 24

This is the basic OneSearch screen. Enter your search terms in the search cell and select the subject databases you want to search. Select a single subject by clicking the check box. Slide 5, 5 of 24

You can also search all of the Library s online databases by clicking Select / deselect all. Slide 6, 6 of 24

The search status screen will appear. This screen displays the progress of your search throughout the various databases. You can view the first available results while the search is in progress by clicking Show Available Results Now. Slide 7, 7 of 24

Here is the results page. OneSearch discovered 275 items containing sustainable energy. It is important to note that this results list is limited to the most relevant hits from each database. Slide 8, 8 of 24

Let s look at a few ways we can limit our results. First, we ll add the term transportation using the Boolean AND to the original search phrase, which drops us to 219 hits. We can also use the suggested Subject: Thesaurus Terms to find synonyms or related search terms. Slide 9, 9 of 24

We can also limit by Publication Date. We ll limit our results to materials published in the last 5 years by moving the slider to 2004. We are now down to 166 hits. Slide 10, 10 of 24

The Integrated Search box displays the databases searched. Links allow you to view the results just from the individual database. For example, we ll click on General resource to view the hits from the Library s Online Catalog. Slide 11, 11 of 24

Here are the 2 hits OneSearch found in the Library s Online Catalog. We can go directly to the catalog record for Design e2 by clicking Retrieve Item. Slide 12, 12 of 24

Let s take a look at the results from the LexisNexis Academic database by clicking the link. Slide 13, 13 of 24

Here are the results from LexisNexis Academic, and a good example of using OneSearch as a discovery tool. The results page displays 30 hits, however, if we do the same search in the standalone LexisNexis Academic database, we ll find over 230 hits. It s a good idea to search the native database once you discover results in OneSearch. Slide 14, 14 of 24

Ebooks can also be accessed through OneSearch. Most of the Library s ebooks are available through ebrary Academic Complete. To view these results, click on the Full Text Ebooks link. Slide 15, 15 of 24

Here are the top 30 results from ebrary Academic Complete. Again, to view the item, click Retrieve Item. Slide 16, 16 of 24

Returning to our original results page, notice the first two records do not include the Retrieve Item link. To limit our results to items that are available online in full text, we ll click on the Search Options link. Slide 17, 17 of 24

You can limit your results in various ways using the Search Options window. We can limit by Full Text across all databases by checking the box. Limiting by many of the other options may only apply to Ebsco-hosted databases and could remove results from non-ebsco databases. Click Search to apply the limiter to the results. Slide 18, 18 of 24

We now have 135 records, all of which are available online in full text. To view an article, click the PDF or HTML Full Text link or the Retrieve Item link. Slide 19, 19 of 24

From off campus, this screen will appear before you can continue to the online resource. To login, use your 7-digit Chaminade ID Number and Password and click Login. You will then have access to this database and all other online resources until you exit your Internet browser. Slide 20, 20 of 24

You can also access OneSearch though the Web Portal. Enter your 7-digit Chaminade ID Number and your Password to log in. Slide 21, 21 of 24

Go to the Resources drop-down menu and click on Research Databases to access the Library s online resources, including OneSearch. Slide 22, 22 of 24

This concludes the OneSearch online tutorial. Please view our Finding Journal Articles and Finding Books tutorials for more searching tips. For any additional assistance, contact us at 808.739.4660 or library@chaminade.edu. Slide 23, 23 of 24
