What is Discover! A single interface to search our library s content. This platform provides users with an easy, yet powerful means of accessing resources through a single search. What resources are searched in Discover! Library Resources EBSCO Subscribed Databases Non-EBSCO Subscribed Databases, including: o JSTOR o Alexander Street Press o Web of Science Library Catalog Journal Subscriptions ebooks And more! Additional Resources CountryWatch MathSciNet Literature Resource Center ProQuest: Historical Newspapers PAIS Searches all of these resources in a single interface! Some additional features of Discover! Limiters & clustering Citation formatting/bibliographic export Persistent linking De-duplicated records Real time availability of catalog resources Relevance ranking Available on mobile devices 1

I. Searching Discover! Basic Search A basic keyword search is set as the default. You will only see one search box in the basic search screen, however, you also have the ability to apply limiters by clicking the Search Options link. Advanced search An advanced search will have multiple rows for search terms, drop down menus to select various fields, and the ability to apply limiters at the bottom of your screen. NOTE: After you ve entered your basic keyword search from the Library s homepage, you will be able to access the Advanced Search features by clicking Refine Search. II. Viewing Results Result Screen The result list screen has three columns: Left (Limiters and Clustering), Middle (Results Display), and Right (Additional Resources & Related Information). Results may contain articles, books, multimedia, documents, summaries, citations, abstracts, and more. Limiters & Clustering Results Additional Resources & Related Information 2

To view the detailed record, click on a title within the result list. You will see details you are familiar with such as Source, Document Type, Subject Terms, Abstract, etc. Tools are available on the right. If available, the PDF Full Text icon will appear on the left. Use these tools to apply various functions, such as print, e-mail, save. III. Limiters & Clustering The Limiters and Clustering column on the left allows you to refine your results and apply limiters. Limit to Catalog Only to search for books, media, and more in-library materials! Show More will reveal more ways to refine your search. 3

Retrieve Catalog Item will lead you to the library s catalog. View the real time availability of status and location: Available, Due, In Lib Use, etc. When you view the detailed record of an item from our catalog, you can expand one of the above categories (if available) to view the corresponding information, such as book reviews, similar books, and other books by the author. The Content Provider limiter is one of the standout features of the Discover! platform. This limiter shows the EBSCO and EBSCO partnered databases which have generated results. Click any content provider hyperlink to show only the results from that source (Ex: selecting Academic Search Premier will generate all 356933 results from that source). Checking multiple boxes will generate results from the content providers selected. Show More will reveal all other content providers (EBSCO and EBSCO partnered) that have generated results in a search. 4

A note about the use of subjects in Discover! Thesaurus terms are descriptive terms applied by EBSCO, and may also include Library of Congress terms. Thesaurus terms describe what a source is about and may also appear in the source. Thesaurus terms are marked by an asterisk within the detailed record of a source. Major Heading terms are descriptive terms from CINAHL and MEDLINE, for example, which both have unique thesauri. Subject terms are pulled from terms listed within a source (article, book, report, etc.). These are Library of Congress terms but may also include EBSCO terms. Select and update any of the subjects above to refine your initial search results. 5

IV. Add Additional Resources The Add Additional Resources column on the right contains content from sources not partnered with EBSCO. Mouseover each hyperlink to see the number of results each source has retrieved. Click on a single hyperlink to retrieve only those results from that resource. OR, select multiple resources using the check boxes and update your results. EBSCO will remove any duplicate records that are generated when additional resources are added to a search. Other items that will appear in the Additional Resources and Related Information column include Related Images, Library Research Guides, and other widgets that may be added in the future. 6
