Preface Web OS Browser-Based Iterface (BBI) software is icluded i the Alteo WebSystems family of Web switches. The BBI software lets you use your Web-browser to access switch iformatio ad statistics, ad to perform switch cofiguratio via the Iteret. This Quick Guide provides a overview of how to access ad use the Web OS BBI. Who Should Use This Book This Quick Guide is iteded for etwork istallers ad system admiistrators egaged i cofigurig ad maitaiig a etwork. It assumes that you are familiar with your Alteo Web- Systems Web switch, your Web-browser, Etheret cocepts, IP addressig, the IEEE 802.1d Spaig-Tree Protocol, ad SNMP cofiguratio parameters. CHAPTER 1 Gettig Started This chapter briefly describes the software features ad requiremets for the Web OS Browser- Based Iterface (BBI), ad explais how to access the Web OS BBI start page. Features The etwork admiistrator ca access all switch cofiguratio ad moitorig fuctios through the Web OS BBI, a Web-based switch maagemet iterface. The Web OS BBI has the followig features: All of the same cofiguratio ad moitorig fuctios as the commad-lie iterface Ituitive ad easy-to-use iterface structure Nothig to istall; the Web OS BBI is part of the Web OS switch software Two levels of password protectio Ca be upgraded as future software releases are available Requiremets Alteo 180 series, Alteo AD2/AD3/AD4, or Alteo 700 series Web switches Istalled Web OS switch software PC or workstatio with etwork access to the switch Frame-capable Web-browser software, such as the followig: o Netscape Navigator 3.0x or higher o Iteret Explorer 3.0x or higher JavaScript eabled i your Web-browser 9
Switch Set Up Before you ca access the Web OS BBI, miimal cofiguratio is required o the switch. IP Iterfaces At least oe IP iterface must be cofigured o the switch. This is usually doe from the commad-lie iterface durig first-time switch set up. Each IP iterface address provides a poit of access for Web OS BBI switch maagemet. For complete iformatio about cofigurig IP iterfaces, see your Web OS Commad Referece maual. Eablig/Disablig BBI Access By default, Web OS BBI access is eabled. If you eed to disable or re-eable access, use oe of the followig commads from the commad-lie iterface (depedig o the Web OS software versio): Web OS Release 5.x ad 8.x >> Mai# /cfg/sys/http <disable eable (or just d e)> Web OS Release 7.x >> Mai# /cfg/sys/web <disable eable (or just d e)> For more iformatio o the accessig ad cofigurig the switch through the commad-lie iterface, see your Web OS Commad Referece maual. Web-Browser Set Up Most moder Web-browsers work with frames ad JavaScript by default, ad require o additioal set up. However, you should check your Web-browser s features ad cofiguratio to make sure frames ad JavaScript are eabled. NOTE JavaScript is ot the same as Java. Startig the Web OS BBI Whe the switch ad browser set up is doe, follow these steps to lauch the Web OS BBI: 1. Start your Web-browser. 2. Eter the switch IP iterface address i the Web-browser s URL field. For example, cosider a IP iterface with a etwork IP address of 200.200.200.100. Usig Netscape Navigator, you could eter the followig: If the IP iterface s address has a ame o your local domai ame server, you could eter the ame istead. For example, with Iteret Explorer, you could eter the followig: 3. Log i to the switch. If your switch ad browser are properly cofigured, you will be asked to eter a password: Eter the accout ame ad password for the switch s admiistrator or user accout. 4. Allow the Web OS Dashboard page to load. Whe the proper accout ame ad password combiatio is etered, the Web OS BBI Dashboard page is displayed i your browser s viewig area: NOTE There may be a slight delay while the Dashboard page is beig iitialized. CHAPTER 2 Web OS BBI Basics Oce you are properly logged i, the Web OS BBI appears i your Web-browser s viewig widow: There are four mai regios o the Web OS scree: The toolbar is used for selectig the cotext for your actios i the other widows. The avigatio widow is used for selectig particular items or features to act upo. The forms widow is used for viewig or alterig switch iformatio. The message widow is used for displayig the 10 latest switch syslog messages ad evets. 13
Toolbar Cotext Buttos The toolbar is used for settig the cotext for your actios i the applicatio. There are three cotext buttos: Cofigure Statistics Dashboard Whe selected, you ca access the switch cofiguratio forms. Cofiguratio forms ca be altered oly if you are logged i usig the admiistrator accout. Select a item i the avigatio widow to display the desired cofiguratio form i the forms widow. Whe selected, you ca view iformatio about switch performace. Select a item i the avigatio widow to display the desired statistics i the forms widow. This cotext butto is selected by default whe the Web OS BBI is first activated. Whe selected, basic switch iformatio ad status ca be viewed i the forms widow. Select a item i the avigatio widow to display the desired dashboard iformatio i the forms widow. Whe a cotext ico is selected, the butto will be highlighted as a remider of the curret cotext mode. Commads The followig geeral commads are available o the toolbar: Apply Save Help Show Log Quit Pedig cofiguratio chages do ot take effect util the Apply commad is selected. Oce applied, all chages (except eablig/disablig Spaig-Tree Protocol) take effect o the switch immediately. If you do ot save the chages, however, they will be lost the ext time the switch is rebooted. Writes applied cofiguratio chages to o-volatile flash memory o the switch. Opes a ew Web-browser widow for displayig the basic olie help iformatio. Close the help browser whe fiished. Opes a ew Web-browser widow for displayig the 10 most recet switch log messages. Navigatio Widow The avigatio widow is used for selectig a particular switch feature to act upo. Status, statistics, or cofiguratio forms for the selected item will appear i the forms widow, depedig o the cotext chose o the toolbar. The avigatio widow cotais a tree of folders, sub-folders, ad feature icos: You ca click o ay closed folder to ope it ad reveal its cotets. Click o ay ope folder to close it. Click o ay feature ico to load the appropriate status, statistics, or cofiguratio form i the forms widow. Some folders also have forms. If the ame of the folders is uderlied, click o the ame to display the appropriate form. Forms Widow Whe a feature ico is selected o the avigatio widow, a status, statistics, or cofiguratio form is displayed i the forms widow. The exact ature of the form depeds o the curret cotext selected o the toolbar, as well as the type of iformatio available. Not all feature icos have forms for all cotexts. Some forms display switch iformatio such as settigs, status, or statistics. Others allow you to make cofiguratio chages to switch parameters. Chapter 2: Web OS BBI Basics 15
Message Widow Switch log messages are geerated by evets such as logi/logout activity, password chages, cofiguratio chages, ad switch reboot. The Web OS BBI records the te most recet messages ad displays each oe briefly i the message widow. Whe the teth message has bee displayed, the cycle is repeated. To view all te messages at the same time, select the Show Log commad o the toolbar. A ew Web-browser widow will be opeed to display the log iformatio. Close the widow whe fiished. CHAPTER 3 Cofigurig the Switch The Web OS BBI ca be used to view ad chage switch cofiguratio parameters. The same cofiguratio parameters that are available through the switch s commad-lie iterface are preset o the Web OS BBI cofiguratio forms. The followig provides a basic outlie for switch cofiguratio. You should first be familiar with cofiguratio as covered i the Web OS Commad Referece maual. NOTE You must be logged i usig the admiistrator accout i order to chage switch cofiguratio settigs. Cofiguratio Steps Follow these basic steps for viewig or cofigurig switch parameters: 1. Select the Cofigure cotext butto i theweb OS toolbar: 2. Select a feature ico i the avigatio widow. 3. View or make chages to the settigs show i the forms widow. For example: NOTE Fields which must be cofigured for proper switch operatios are highlighted o the forms i GREEN type. Items which load other forms whe selected are uderlied. 4. Submit, reset, or delete the form cotets usig buttos o the bottom of the form. Submit Reset Delete Whe selected, the form set to the switch. Ay cofiguratio chages are placed i the pedig state ad do ot take effect util the toolbar Apply commad is give. Whe selected, the form fields are reset to their last submitted values. This butto is available for cofiguratio items that ca be deleted. Whe selected, the featured item is slated to be removed from the switch cofiguratio database. The item is ot actually deleted, however, util the toolbar Apply commad is give. 5. Apply ad save your chages usig the toolbar commads. Pedig cofiguratio chages (icludig deletios) do ot take effect util the Apply commad is selected.
