Slide 1 By: Kat Snizaski CCIT Trainer Welcome to this Tuesday s Tech Talk. Today we will be talking about a new tool available to everyone on campus to help with reading, writing and simply communicating more efficiently with the written word. Slide 2 Installing Read&Write Gold (RWGold) Reading Text Recording Text Writing Tools Helpful Resources & Options Today I m going to talk about installing Read&Write Gold; using some of the reading tools (which are my favorite), recording documents to listen to later or over and over in my case, tool to help while you are writing and introduce you to some of the resources in Read&Write Gold to help you learn what you need to know, when you need to know it. Slide 3 Here are instructions for downloading and installing the software. To install the standalone version of Read and Write Gold on a windows machine, go to the software repository folder: R:\RWGold\Win\v11\RWGold win standalone setup. Run the top file, setup.exe. (The other is a configuration file and won t do anything.) Allow the software install via the pop-up. The only additional step is allowing it to activate the license when you first run the application. That s it! On a multiuser machine, each user will have to activate the license. I m going to step you through this.

Slide 4 To be able to get to the Software (R: Drive) you need to first be logged into Novel. Slide 5 Open your Documents folder by clicking the folder on your task bar at the bottom of your desktop. Scroll down to click on SOFTWARE on the left. Then scroll down on the right and open the RWGold.

Slide 6 Select Win to install on a Windows machine and Mac to install on a Mac. Slide 7 You want to install the latest version. Open v11 folder. Slide 8 Don t click the RWInstall folder. Open the folder named RWGold win standalone setup.

Slide 9 Now, double click the first Setup icon in this folder. Follow the wizard to finish installation. Slide 10 That s it! There will be an icon on your desktop The first time you launch it will ask you to activate the license That s it! There will be an icon on your desktop. The first time you launch it will ask you to activate the license. Slide 11

Slide 12 When you open RWGold, give it a second (or two) and there will be a floating toolbar that floats on all your open windows. Here we are looking at a.pdf file. The text is selected and I only need to click the play button located in the middle of the floating tool bar. Slide 13 This is an example of having RWGold read a web page. I select the text I want read first (just to tell the software what text I want to listen to). Then Click the Play button. Slide 14 Listening to a Word file works the same way. But let s say I need to listen to this particular text several times, or make it available on my telephone to help me prepare to a test. I can also record the text. On the floating tool bar I click the little triangle on the far right, then select Speech Maker then select Speech Maker from the Menu. This creates an mp3 file. Now, I can move it anywhere I need it for future use.

Slide 15 I have to admit this is one of my favorite uses for this amazing-simple tool. When writing emails and papers, I try (very unsuccessfully) to proof read my text. Before sending or submitting my paper, I use this feature to listen to my written words. No matter how many times I read and re-read my text, Read&Write will always allow me find something that I didn t catch by reading it myself. THANK YOU RWGold!!!! I need all the help I can get. Slide 16 Another feature is to have this tool read as you write. Each time I hit the space bar while typing, RWGold reads the word to me. When I hit the period to close a sentence and pause. It re-read the entire sentence. Pretty cool! Slide 17 I have barely touched the surface for what this tool can do for you. I now what to show you a couple of tools you can use to help yourself. Each button on the floating toolbar has a little down arrow beside it. Don t ever be afraid to click it. Those triangles only mean that there are more options for you to see. For example, if you are curious about the Prediction Tool, click the triangle beside the light bulb then select Watch Prediction video tour This will take a quick video on what that can do and how to use it.

Slide 18 There are also options associated with these tools. An example is the Play button. If you want to control the voice that is reading to you, like make it faster or change the gender you can click the little triangle next to the play button and select Speech Options For future reference any time you see an option that has a dot dot dot after it, don t be afraid to click it. That means it will open a dialog box with more advance options. Slide 19 There are several tools that are hidden on the toolbar. See the triangle to the far right? Click it and you see all your options.
