4 Introduction. Outline The purpose of this document is to explain the format of the Level 3 data products that are generated by Thermal And Nearinfrared Sensor for carbon ObservationCloud and Aerosol Imager (TANSOCAI) onboard reenhouse gases Observing SATellite (OSAT) (hereafter abbreviated as CAI L3 data products) and that are distributed by the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan. The following chapters will provide the data for the users with the information on the file naming convention used in the OSAT data product line (in Chapter 2) and with the specifications of the file format of each CAI L3 data product (in Chapter 3 to 5)..2 Scope of this document The products and their versions described in this document are listed below (Table ). 5 2 CAI Level 3 Data Products 2. Description of CAI L3 data products The CAI L3 data products are the global distribution generated by the image data observed by TANSOCAI. Now, three CAI L3 data products are available on OSAT Interface ateway (UI). Those products are L3 global radiance distribution generated by the CAI LB+ data, L3 global reflectance distribution and L3 NDVI generated by the CAI LB data. The descriptions of each product are described in the following chapters. 2.2 List of CAI L3 data products and file naming convention Table 2 lists the CAI L3 data products. These data products are available in a HDF5 format. The L3 global radiance distribution, L3 global reflectance distribution, and L3 NDVI data products are categorized as standard products and are released to all the users. The L3 global cloud property and L3 global aerosol property data products are research products and they are made available to the registered researchers only. These data products are under preparation and the further description is not included in this document. 7 2.3 HDF5 format 2.3. Description of the HDF5 format HDF5 is a file format that has a hierarchical structure. The structure of each data product is described in the following chapters. Refer to URL for details on the HDF5 format, library, tools and software. The version of the library used for the data products is stored in the following path: /lobal/md_metadata/distributioninfo/md_distribution/distributionformat/md_format/version HDF5 data types The data types contained in the CAI L3 data products are defined as below (Table 22). 9 3 L3 global radiance distribution 3. Description of L3 global radiance distribution L3 global radiance distribution product is generated from the TANSOCAI LB+ product acquired during the three consecutive observation days. This product is overlapped the CAI LB+ data in chronological order. OSAT goes around the globe in a subrecurrent orbit and covers the entire globe for three days. TANSOCAI LB+ products of path unit are prepared for each day. L3 global radiance distribution product is generated each date by using the CAI LB+ data for three observation days and shifted day by day. In this data product, radiances of band to band4 are put on 0.25 degrees lattices (2880x440 pixels) on the global map (equirectangular projection). 3.2 Dataset structure The following table summarizes the dataset structure of the L3 global radiance distribution data product. 19 4 L3 global reflectance distribution 4. Description of L3 global reflectance distribution L3 global reflectance distribution product is generated by collecting the image data with minimum reflectance from the TANSOCAI Level B data for 30 days (0 recurrent cycles). At first, the pixel of the minimum reflectance of band2 is specified by using the 30 days data. And then, by using the observation date corresponding to the specified pixel, the reflectance of band, band3, and band4 are selected. This product is the suitable for examining the feature of the ground surface, because the clear sky observation (the ground surface with the low reflectance of band 2) is included and cloud observation (the cloud area with the high reflectance of band2) is removed by collecting the image data for 30 days. This product is generated every 3 days by using the image data for 30 days and shifted three days. The data of the land area and the ocean area with reflectance of band to band4 are processed respectively and put on 0.25 degrees lattices (2880x440 pixels) on the global map (equirectangular projection). 4.2 Dataset structure The following table summarizes the dataset structure of the L3 global reflectance distribution data product. 27 5 L3 NDVI 5. Description of L3 NDVI L3 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI hereinafter) product is calculated by using the reflectance of band2 and band3 generated from the CAI LB data for the 30 days (0 recurrent cycles) radiance data. The reflectance is generated by the same method of L3 global reflectance distribution except for the grid size. This product is generated every 3 days by using the CAI LB data for 30 days and shifted three days. Since the data volume is very large, the global data is divided into 36 rectangles of 30 deg. in latitude by 60 deg. in longitude as the product. This product (rectangle) is composed of /30 degrees lattices (800x900 pixels) on the global map (equirectangular projection). The clear confidence level is also stored in this product as the quality information of the NDVI. The detailed descriptions are found in Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) for TANSOCAI L3 NDVI Product, and therefore not covered herein. 5.2 Rectangle definition Shown in Figure 5 are the rectangles and the rectangle identification numbers. Each rectangle is separated, in longitudinal direction, by 60 deg. starting 25deg. W, and, in latitudinal direction, by 30 deg. starting from the 90 deg. N. For the area having the latitude greater than 60 deg.
